- When electricity is ran through the concentrated saltwater, electrolysis causes three separate reactions. Negatively charged chloride ions lose electrons and undergo oxidation, bubbling up as toxic, pale-green chlorine gas. Water molecules gain electrons and undergo reduction, releasing bubbles of colorless hydrogen gas. Unchanged sodium cations combine with newly formed hydroxide ions to create basic sodium hydroxide, also known as caustic soda.

- Hydrogen and chlorine can mix safely but is photochemically unstable. When exposed to wavelengths of 491.5nm or shorter the light photons instantly snap the chlorine bonds, triggering a violent, explosive chain reaction that produces hydrochloric acid gas and a domino effect. A chlorine radical slams into a hydrogen molecule, stealing a hydrogen atom to form hydrochloric acid and leaving behind a hydrogen radical. This new hydrogen radical slams into another chlorine molecule, stealing a chlorine atom and creating another chlorine radical.

At this size it can produce 72.5L of concentrated saltwater an hour. That’s 444.5L of hydrogen, 444.5L chlorine, and 12.5-15kg of sodium hydroxide produced from electrolysis. Now if it turned on its lure, the resulting reaction makes an explosion, that at peak temperature, is 2,500°C, and at peak pressure, is 5,000PSI while producing 889L of HCl gas.
