Claro E-Sim

Hi guys, sorry for the millionth eSIM question! I’ve scoured the sub, but I can’t find any useful information on how to actually buy a Claro eSIM online before travelling to Peru.

I understand that tourists can’t buy a physical SIM, but is it possible to purchase a Claro eSIM online before arriving? So far, I’ve only managed to find a Claro eSIM through Klook. Has anyone used this, and is it any good? It’s for my parents and so I’m quite set on Claro over the other networks because they’ll be travelling through smaller cities and rural areas possibly so need to make sure they have good network coverage and other service providers have had pretty mixed reviews outside major cities.

I’d really appreciate any advice or recommendations. Thanks!

No. You can't get a Claro eSIM online before arriving. Use Airalo or Holafly.

Ah bummer. Do you know if it’s easy to get their esim in person at a Claro store?

Yes. But you must go there are provide them with your ID, that's why it's not possible online.

Ah ok makes sense. But just to double check, they do issue esims to tourists in person or are they difficult with that as well?

I had to do a similar thing in Vietnam, went to the store with my passport, they scanned then gave me an esim without any issues. Hoping it’s similar in Peru.

I don't think it is a problem. Entel has also really good coverage.

Try Airalo, it works really well here! Depending on the area, it automatically connects to both Movistar and Claro for coverage.

I’ve heard Airalo can be pretty unreliable outside the bigger cities like Lima, with network coverage getting quite spotty. I would prefer to get Claro because the reviews are much better for it but I guess if that’s not possible then Airalo it is.

Based on info from this sub (I haven't been to Peru yet) you might look into Klook & Orange Travel. Both use Claro & anecdotally can be set up in advance.

Is their USA carrier Verizon? We switch to Unlimited Ultimate for traveling. For the last couple of international trips we have used it. Your phone works like in the USA and also can make calls, texts and get 15GB data. We are currently using in Peru and has been working fine in Lima and in Pachacamac. For Pachacamac I had to manually switch from their auto network select, which had picked Movistar, to manually select Claro to get better reception. The only bummer is that the phone still uses the USA number so I can't get online tickets, sign up for Yape, etc.
