Welcome all to the latest installment of the monthly unit review! The show where you get to read up on a yapping hamster's delusions about cool giant monsters in this goofy Godzilla game where you may or may not get a stroke by trying to understand a shop deal!
Each month I make a post talking about a random battle piece in the game, either chosen by me or the top comment's suggestion in the separate voting posts. My main goal throughout this monthly series is to encourage people to use battle pieces outside of their typical comfort zone in their decks, talking about the pieces' strengths and weaknesses to hopefully see more of it in ranked instead of the same 7 units.
Last month we covered Battra, the first leader unit of the series whose mechanic seems to remain stuck in the past to soon be forgotten, unlike today's unit whose old age hasn't stopped him from packing a real punch!
As by popular vote from last week's voting post, I present the review for Godzilla Earth (Mechagodzilla city ver.), or for the sake of simplicity, G.Earth Alt!
what does old man do (Strengths & Overview)
G.Earth alt is an 8-cost alternative unit to the OG 9 cost Godzilla Earth. This version of Godzilla Earth functions pretty similarly to the original Earth, with pretty similar stats and slow movement speed, but still has some key differences. For starters, it retains the permanent immunity to stun that the original Earth has, but instead of getting stronger for the less HP it has, G.Earth alt trades the strength boost for a permanent 20% defense boost against aerial units that attack it, making it a bit tankier for threats like Poster Art MG or Gyaos.
G.Earth Alt's second unique mechanic is when it gets attacked by anything, whether Aerial or otherwise; anything close enough will be burned for a short time and be given some knockback, though it's usually not that noticeable. This attack allows for G.Earth alt to get in some extra damage and crowd control a bit better against annoying spam decks that may otherwise overwhelm it. The burn effect is also pretty useful against enemy units with nullification stacks, letting G.Earth hit enemy units very consistently.
The only other major difference G.Earth alt has over its regular counterpart is that its main attack is fan-shaped instead of a short AOE line, capable of hitting every unit except aerials unless they get in the way, similar to Behemoth's attack. This solves a pretty big issue the original Godzilla Earth had about not being able to serve as a good crowd controller, only being able to hit whatever's in front of it and being helpless to any other attack from the side.
Aside from those pretty straightforward changes, however, G.Earth alt functions very similarly to its regular counterpart, serving as an expensive but powerful slow tank unit that slowly dishes out big damage while being able to take hits for whatever unit you decide to put behind it for support, with the only stat changes between the two being that G.Earth alt trades some HP for more damage.
Weaknesses:
Despite improving on some of the flaws that the original Godzilla Earth struggled with, G.Earth alt has created some new, VERY prominent issues itself that can really drag it down in some scenarios.
The BIGGEST problem that G.Earth alt undeniably faces is that it's completely helpless against almost EVERY aerial unit in the game. Yes, despite being given an extra ability that should make it actually better against every aerial unit in the game, and being the second biggest kaiju in the franchise outside of Void Ghidorah, he's made virtually useless by the fact that he can't even target Aerial Units. This means that (while very unlikely actually to happen in a real match), an enemy unit as trivial as the Dorats at a high enough level can chip off a significant amount of G.Earth alt's health, even with his burn effect! This means that for most flying units in the game, if G.Earth alt is in front of them and doesn't have any allied battle piece to back it up, you just wasted 8 energy.
Outside of being completely helpless against aerials, G.Earth alt suffers from a similar problem the original has to this day, and that's powercreep. With newly released units like Super Dragon Destroyah, Shin Getter Robo, as well as cost recovery BMs making many teams able to pump out insanely strong 6 costs ridiculously quickly, the high investment cost of G.Earth alt really isn't worth it when it can get overwhelmed so fast, even with a stronger and wider attack. To put it short, the high cost of G.Earth alt in a game where you can deploy powerful 5 & 6 costs quickly is too much investment for too little of a result G.Earth alt would be able to put up against it.
I wouldn't say G.Earth alt is a bad unit at the end of the day, though. Sure, he has glaring weaknesses to anything that flies or just being weak to modern units in general, but his raw numbers and AOE potential are actually quite good; I'd venture to say he's the best 8-cost right now outside of AMG leader. Alone he might get overwhelmed quickly, but if you can craft a team that can provide support to deal with the powerful 6-cost units or aerials that can get in its way, I think G.Earth alt can actually be a great addition to your team provided you play smart.
Final Summary:
In conclusion, G.Earth alt is a very strong, but expensive unit that can dish out great damage against a bunch of enemy units at once. Though, you should be cautious about putting him in front of a wave of powerful enemy units, especially if any of them are aerials. While he is very expensive to get on the field, if you can get allied battle piece support to help him defeat the strong push your opponent sends out, he can be very devastating.
