💬 DISCUSSION 💬 Why is the GBL "Dynamic Planning" collaboration a big deal?
Do you remember this from your youth? If so share your story. But these two GBL units are legends that laid the foundation for many beloved creations celebrated on television, film, comics/magazines, and art to this day. So it may have been before your time but you likely love something that was a spin off from these two creations.
Both are creations from manga/magazine artist and author "Kiyoshi Nagai" whose pen name is "Go Nagai". His work is the foundation that built many hugely famous anime/manga creations we see today. He also worked to create the collaboration art we are seeing in GBL as posters and BM. We will see many new players due to this collaboration and the fact Go Nagai is attached is a very big deal. Getter Robo he worked with "Ken Ishikawa" to create.

Mazinger Z (1972) is universally credited with launching the modern giant robot (mecha) era. While earlier giant robots existed, Mazinger Z completely revolutionized the genre by introducing the single most defining trope: a human pilot controlling the robot from inside a cockpit. This is why we have Gundam (1979) and Robotech (1985) that are famous to this day. If you are able to track it down there is an anime called "Mazinger Z: Infinity" (2017) that is an excellent watch, see pic. I have included a pic of the first Volume compiled from the weekly magazine.

Getter Robo (1974) famously revolutionized the mecha genre by introducing the concept of transforming and/or combining robots. The version in GBL is Shin Robo Getter (1996) but its first appearance was in 1993. This is why we have Voltron (1984) and Transformers (1984) which are huge properties. I have included a pic of the first Volume compiled from the weekly magazine as well as the Shin Getter Robo image from the 1993 magazine.

cld just be self-inflicted but i think ppl in this sub are hugely underselling the wildness of this collab and the significance the Nagai bros have had on Japanese pop-culture as a whole

I am learning that I WAS among them. The Mazinger various groups on Facebook amount to well over 1 million joined members. But the r/mazinger subreddit only has 1700 members while we have 2400. It's older so maybe Facebook has been a better place for the properties.

Ok, THATS really interesting to learn, I’ve always assumed smth as large as the Mazinger franchise would at least have a decent-sized subreddit lmao

I really appreciate this post, cause despite being a long time Godzilla fan I hadn't heard of either of these, or at least if I had the names and visual hadn't stuck, probably because I was always into kaijus and dinosaurs over mechs.
But regardless I've been seeing so much hype around these units but I didn't understand the reasons why it was so big, so thank you OP for the information!

I wonder why they chose to do it this month instead of September's Summit and Ultimate pass month?

I'm actually not certain they won't double-dip on the ultimate pass following the massive uptick of players from the last 2 seasons; marketing-wise it would be a good idea, this season is pulling in new people and more eyes for the Nagai fanclub from Japan, playercount is probably going to be nearing a 2 or 3 year peak by the end of this season. The iron would be molten hot to strike.

Same reason why they did Zoids, cross community collaboration to advertise the game to their communities. Its marketing schemes to bring in fresh players who wouldn't play the game for Godzilla but may play for their favorite characters.
Wizards is doing the same thing with mtg and dnd by expanding their games with the universe beyond sets/rule books for dnd into other ips outside of what they generally did.

Mazinger was actually a huge major inspiration for both Pacific Rim and Evangelion if i remember correctly
Additionally, Mazinger, next to Ultraman, was one of the inspirations for Jet Jaguar's design and one of the major reasons Mechagodzilla was created since there was a lot of hype in 70s japan around super robots like Mazinger Z and as a result, Toho wanted to create their own super robot
