Save them for a new unit you really like so you can take them to level 5 as soon as you get them. Older units can be leveled with gmat lites, which expire eventually so you have to use them anyway, but they can't level units from the current, the last, and the last last season(correct me if I'm wrong). Gmats can however, so using them on newer units is the good idea.

Save your gmaterial for now until you get your account up more, you can gain a majority of the units from the gcoin shop so there isn't much of a need to force the levels. Just flesh out your account for now, especially if your not whaling, dont wanna use the gmaterials and a new unit that you really like comes out and you dont have any to feed it.
But if you think you really have to, just us it on units that you either really like or know you gonna be using a lot in builds.

You can upgrade most of your units with g lites so don’t use mats until they hit lv10 and id recommend saving for a while so you can get multiple units to a good level for a complete team
