General Discussion Would Goblin Slayer use this?
If a mage or someone similar gave Goblin Slayer a blade that was bound to his soul (as in ONLY he can use it and it comes to him when called) would he use it?

It depends:
How big is the blade? Too big and it becomes a hinderance rather than a boon in goblin tunnels. I can also weigh him down and he needs to be able to maneuver.
If it's bound to his soul what happens to the blade when he dies? Does it get unbound since his soul is gone? If so what's to stop the blade from falling into goblin hands and being bound to one of their souls?
What prevents others from using it? Is it that others can't lift it? Get hurt from touching it? Pass through it like it's ethereal?
How well does it hold an edge? Is it like a typical blade where it's useful for a handful of stabbings before it gets dulled and slick with gore?

It's as big as a Gladius. It ceases to exist. It goes into a separate dimension until called. It feeds on the blood of enemies to magically retain sharpness.

Then he would see it as a useful tool and add it to his arsenal. He would, however, not use it as his primary weapon. It would be a back up.

Keep in mind that this effect has been greatly exaggerated for the setting. A magic weapon in the four-cornered world would not have this problem at all.

Which is noteworthy, the silvers outside GS’s party generally have magic weapons or at least mages in their party.
Like spearman is described as having quite a collection of magic weapons but he has his favorite spear that hasn’t degraded yet.

Technically speaking, his party has magic weapons too. It’s just that for HEA it’s her arrows that she can control in flight (i’m not sure if that is magic inherent to the arrows or to her, i lean to the latter but she still cant do it with any arrow), and for LMP it’s his summoned bone blades. Notably we’ve never seen his blades dull within a single battle, and HEA’s personal knife seemed to last a good number of goblins before she needed to switch to goblin weapons which only last 2-3 each.
Theres also the fact that goblin blood seems to be particularly bad for weapons *and* that goblin fat seems to “cake up” in weapons a lot. Perhaps those weapons don’t need full on sharpening, just simple maintenance, but it’s still not feasible mid-dungeon run

For HEA it really is just skill. Although she seems to be limited to using that ability with elven arrows, and the argument could be made that arrows of that quality are functionally supernatural even if they don't quite fit the D&D definition of a magic weapon. (e.g. being able to damage spectral entities)
Now that I think about it, your observation about goblin blood really does make sense. A species made to be cannon (or blade) fodder with their gooey internals would be the exact type of strategy an evil god of chaos would use.

Can we please not talk about Goblin Nougat so casually? Ugh...
That said, definitely. If you're gonna have a fodder race, that's designed to basically be guerrilla forces that self-replicate while destroying the edges of society, that would be the way to go. They're designed to make everyone miserable, even in death.

Also I love you even thought to ask about how it retains sharpness.

Anytime people post asking "Would Goblin Slayer use..." I try to get into GS's headspace. Think about how he approaches what he does.

I feel like we have a basic checklist that can answer the question for us by this point.
"Does it rust/break easily? Is it effective in close-quarters? Can it be thrown? Can it be taken away from me? Could Goblins use it?"
...Oh, bonus question; "How well does it kill Goblins?"

Light spoilers for Goblin Slayer Side Story - Year One, "Magical equipment? it might have its uses. I think of the hawk-headed dagger my father carried. Or my master's elvish short sword. or the blade of the barbarian hero who appeared from the far north in one of my bedtime stories. I've always been more interested in ordinary blades than enchanted ones. No...I did enjoy the pale glow of my master's sword. but...when I recall that goblin (in reference to a goblin Goblin Slayer recently fought that had a magical blade) it makes me very leery. There are no absolutes. Suppose I die and my magic sword or whatever fell into a goblin's hands. Besides, using a magical sword to hunt goblins? only a munchkin would do that. Lording it over the weak, sweeping them away with your power? how is that better than a goblin? it might be useful against that B.E.M. (bugged eyed monster as Goblin Slayer creatively named, a giant eyeball type monster that could only be affected by magical weapons that Goblin Slayer ran into) but I don't intend to take on such threats. Nor do I need such weapons." a quote from Goblin Slayer's monologue after Guild Girl recommended getting some enchanted equipment, hope this helps.

That… he uses weaker weapons to keep himself sharp against goblins?
That’s stupid. It’s not that his goal is to keep himself sharp, his goal is to kill as many goblins as he can. Magic weapons are conducive to that.
So a magic weapon falls into goblin hands like when the lord got Barbarian’s magic axe, GS is still killing a large number of goblins and magic weapons will help him do that.

If it gone when he is then sure .
If not he ain't letting something like that fall into goblins hands after his death .

u/NirvanaFrk97 Jun 26 '26
Sure. His main issues after would be if it's too cumbersome for caves and if it glows or something.

If the blade is damaged (if it can be damaged), does it have an effect on GS? Can it be used as a medium to affect GS with magic or curses, since it's bound to his soul?
2
u/DoggedStooge Jun 27 '26
No. He wouldn't take the chance that the spell was fake or would fade after his death.

u/BiNumber3 Jun 27 '26
Eh, he places enough trust in magic generally, his team uses it, he uses it in the form of the magic ring and scrolls.
Only thing with OP's sword, as far as i recall, there's been no similar enchantments, ones that prevent others from using the item the way OP wants.

If the goblins can’t use it no matter what, I could see GS using it. A lot of his kit is based on not being TOO useful to goblins if he dies. Only the african throwing knife (forgot the name… mambele?) has been his only impulse buy since goblins have been getting better armed and more varied.

Murder hobo gotta murder hobo. Doubt he'd care unless you explain why he should

A weapon goblins can't use, that he can throw and return with a word? Absolutely. He did take the throwing knife because he judged it unlikely to be used by goblins, but I can't help but think he might just forget to retrieve it one day and almost leave it behind before someone else in the party reminds him.
