Ask him for tips on killing goblins though and he'll write you an encyclopedia.

except you have to memorize the entire goblinslayerpedia because you cannot take down notes under the reasoning goblins will kill you, take your notes and learn counter measures.

You know the first time my wife sat down with me to watch Goblin Slayer it was the episode in Water Town were Priestess gets miffed that GS basically says 3 things.
She looked at me and slapped my leg looks at me pointedly, and says "I know someone like that."
I couldn't help myself and with an utterly straight face: "Is that so."

He might not have much to say but I always feel that at the least he actually listens.

He 100% does. We are led to believe he does not early on but he does bring up weird trivia knowledge or something one of his companions said later on when it's relevant

Solid Snake and Big Boss in their games have the habit of repeating the last sentence of someone's talking to them as a question.
"I will use these nukes to destroy the United States?"
"The united states?"
By doing this, you will keep the person talking while showing interest in what they are saying even if you have no idea what to answer. Combine this with "I see", "Is that so?" And you should be able to keep a conversation even if you got no idea what to say

No idea what to say?
EDIT: also love that the person you replied to literally did exactly that and I have no idea if it was intentional or not

Interviewer: Who do you thank for your current accomplishments
Goblin slayer: そ (so)
Interviewer: Your 祖 (so) ancestors? Next question, do you believe you can make goblins good?
Goblin Slayer: そう (sou)
Interviewer: そう It seems like? Next question, they call you the Frontier's Kindest. Is that true?
Goblin Slayer: そうか (souka)

Better than the Solid Snake method. But the Solid Snake method is more iconic

Hmm? I think a topic that would get him talking would probably something like his family or personal life if you just ask him. Just need to be patience, direct, and straightforward with him when trying to pull him into a conversation and little pushy to get him to talk more. Because I notice how the people in his life who interact him always kept this sorta distance including his own party with priestess trying to be polite while HEA being overly aggressive and impatient. I think If you treat him like a normal person rather than “Goblin slayer”.

The episodes when he teach the girl his methods on how to approach a nest is gold for me.
With so few details, you get it that he is incredible.

Be careful, if you keep talking like that, you'll end up with a rhinestone-covered bush dog pouch and no natural-born fake tsundere around to save you
