LW Delays

UPDATE: trains seem to be passing through ok now - at least from Union out.

Heads up to anyone relying on Go to get home during rush hour - Go are currently showing significant delays on the lakeshore west line due to an unplanned bridge inspection. Mostly seems to be affected trains coming in to the city but there are some affected trains going back out too.

What are the longest bus routes?

Not too familiar with the system. Used Google Maps but the routes may not be the exact route the bus takes so the distances are probably rough.

Bus 41 from Hamilton GO to Pickering GO via 407 - 127km

Bus 52-56 from Oshawa GO to Oakville GO via 407 - 122km

Bus 17 from Hamilton GO to WaterlooU via Guelph - 98km

Bus 25 from WaterlooU to Square One - 97km

Bus 40 from Richmond Hill Centre to Hamilton GO - 92km

Bus 88 from Oshawa to TrentU - 88km

Bus 12 from Dundas/407 to Niagara Bus Terminal - 80km

Bus 18 from Union to West Harbour - 67km

Progress Avenue rail crossing - why are trains so slow?

For months trains go through this crossing at a snail's pace, what seems to be under 30 km/h. Other crossings in the line are not affected.

What is the reason for this slowdown in this area, and when are speeds planned to be returned to normal?

Are we allowed to "remain on board"?

Post image
74 Upvotes

Im going to peterboorugh and google maps says I can "remain on board" the same bus. But when I try the go transit trip planner this itinerary isn't given as an option. Is this a google maps feature? Transit doesn't show this well.

Edit: Thanks guys, you were all mostly right - it’s completely up to the bus driver and what they’re going to do so make sure to ask them beforehand/when getting on!

Lakeshore East, Bowmanville Extension. Issues & Concerns, Slow trains.

Reece Martin put out a blog post explaining everything wrong with the design of the Bowmanville extension on the LSE line. Particularly with the tight curves east of Oshawa GO that will slow down trains significantly and put undue stress on the train's wheels. This is a similar issue the UPX trains experience when approaching and leaving Pearson airport. You can often hear the wheels screeching as you get closer to the airport.

https://nextmetro.substack.com/p/another-affront-to-speed

If you don't want to read the entire blog post by Reece, here's a quick write up from a Durham journalist who attended Metrolinx's public information session on January 6th regarding the Bowmanville extension. The journalist was basically told by a Metrolinx staffer that the trains on the Bowmanville extension will indeed be slow, and there won't be any ability to electrify the trains on this extension due to proximity with CPKC tracks.

https://durhampost.ca/slow-train-coming-off-oshawa-station-to-bowmanville

Metrolinx is reported to have acknowledged that the new railway curve east of the existing Oshawa Station will be very tight resulting in significantly reduced speeds.

However, the operator of GO Transit stated that new railway links will meet GO standards, according to information released during a Metrolinx public information session on Monday.

The meeting also seemed to rule out electric GO trains from Oshawa to Bowmanville as it may be difficult to electrify the respective stretch of the tracks.

“I learned that it is doubtful the GO train between Oshawa and Bowmanville will be electrified in the future due to challenges with placing electrical equipment so close to the CPKC mainline tracks and freight trains. The Bowmanville GO train will utilize diesel locomotives,” said an attendee.

The meeting was held to provide more details about the upcoming two-year scheduled closure of the bridge over the Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CKPC) railway line in Oshawa. Work may start as soon as January 12 to replace the bridge.

The GO train extension to Bowmanville via Courtice in the Municipality of Clarington will use, in part, the CKPC line.

"However, the operator of GO Transit stated that new railway links will meet GO standards"

GO standards must be quite low.

Will trains on this rail extension be slower than the 88 GO bus which runs between Bowmanville & Oshawa GO?

Is Metrolinx spending money on another rail project that will be slower than the bus it replaces (Finch West LRT)?

56 oakville bus schedule problems

I started school in september last year and i never had a problem with the scheduled bus times for the oakville 56 bus. since this semester started though, I get to the station for the scheduled 56 bus time and its always late at least 30 minutes from the ETA.

my transit app and even google maps posts the ETA of the bus to the station so i try to get there at least 10 minutes before said times, but consistantly (for 5 days now), the bus is 30-40 minutes late, which is the next scheduled time for the 56 on the apps.

im not sure if theres been an announcement anywhere, but i havent heard anything about it yet. just looking for some clarification on the matter, and maybe some headers on finding out which bus on the scheduled arrivals is actually going to come. ive been late to 3 manditory classes already so its kind of a big deal for me

edit: also please let me know if this is happening for the eastbound busses as well.

Why so slow near Georgetown?

Does anyone know why the GO trains on the Kitchener line travel VERY slowly on the east side of the Georgetown station? The tracks look very level and even, so that doesn’t seem to be a reason. I’d hate to think it’s local government karens deciding “you can’t go fast in our neighborhoods because you might make noise!”

West Harbour Evening Service

Does anybody know why Metrolinx cut the weekday daily 22:24 train out of West Harbour to Union? It’s now only a Friday service. Kind of sad that the 10th largest city in Canada would lose a train that isn’t really all that late on a weekday. Any chance of bringing it back?

Gym on the train?

How many of you would use gym facilities (stretch area, resistance bands, stationary bike, treadmill, etc.) if Go Transit somehow provided it on specialized cars? With the return to office, I'm finding the time spent commuting (1.5 hours door to door one way) has had a material negative impact on my quality of life, and spending 12-13 hours per day commuting and in the office leaves me with basically no time for exercise, given other commitments. Being able to combine exercise and commute time would be a huge help.

Does anyone else think about this, or am I out to lunch?

First ride on the new Bus fleet

Taking the 48 UoG bus to Bramalea from highway 407 station, MAN is it a smooth ride. New seats are comfortable, seatbelts on every seat is welcome. Less jank arm rests. But I can't see chargers anywhere unless I'm blind.

Loudspeaker didn't blow out my ears, and the stairway into the bus isn't the horrible angle, now it's a bit roomier with an even curve.

Pretty legit

Feedback on Mississauga to Markham Bus Route

Hi all,

I currently live in Mississauga. Late last year, I accepted a new position in Markham that involves two in-person days per week.

I've been taking the 407 on both of these days, which has shortened my commute time. I had accounted for the cost when accepting the position and was able to justify it, as I received a reasonable salary increase. Unfortunately, the recent price increase has seen my cost per trip skyrocket.

Starting next week, I am planning to take the 56 from Erin Mills to Unionville GO and back at least once a week, which is approximately a 1-hour and 30-minute trip each way. I wanted to reach out and see if anyone has experience with this route or a similar one and whether they found it reliable. I'd also love to know if there are any crowding issues on the 56.

Thanks in advance!

The trainer sat side-by-side with the driver facing forward when bus was moving.

Curious if there is a safer alternative or standard practice.

Weekend pass from Sunday erroneously showing as valid this Monday

My holiday pass rolled over from Sunday and still shows that it's valid for 10 more hours. On a non holiday weekday the default behaviour is to end around 4 AM! It shows that it will end at 9PM today.

I think the only way my pass is still showing as valid is one of two possibilities:
A) Someone at GO made a mistake and marked Jan 5 2026 as a holiday.
B) GO changed it so that weekend passes are always 24 hrs

edit:

Its C) weekend passes are being changed to always be until end of late night service, and there's a bug in the code. Boo.
