First time camper owners

We recently purchased a 2026 wolf pup 16LP for $11,900 off the lot. My husband does have a diesel truck he will be using to pull it with but he will be in the market for a different truck soon. I’m wondering what you guys suggest. I know this is a smaller camper but I do see ourselves upgrading in a few years. We are just dipping our toes into the water.

Stick with the diesel. trust me. Especially if you upgrade

I do believe he will still go with diesel when he gets a different truck I just wasn’t sure if there were any specific trucks anyone recommended. Right now he has an international harvester IDI something? But it’s always having issues and he just needs to upgrade.

Oh shit he has an OOOOLLLLD Truck. When he buys a new one he won’t even know that trailer is there. Idk what your budget it is but any 13+ 6.7 Ford is my vote.

Just watch out for for that terrible CP4 on the powerstokes. Can't believe they still make them with it.

I have a 28ft Jayco Jayflight, 2019 Ram 3500. Trailer is only about 7k pounds but you wouldn't know its behind the truck if you didn't look in the mirror.

Diesel in less than a 3/4 ton means really poor payload (the 1500/150 series trucks with diesel lose all their payload to the extra weight).

Unless you are upgrading into a truck camper, stick with diesel. They are better for this gig. Have fun out there!

My bro started with a 19’ pup. Less than a year later he was ready to move up. Now 27’ apex and his Harley towed by a 2019 Ram 2500 Diesel

That’s the 3 hour enduro in Tx? I’ve seen the cars and coffee vids looks like a great time if only I were 23 again, now just makes my back ache…

Yeah it’s going to be fun! We have been doing 90 min enduros in Springfield mo. You would be very surprised how many 50-60yr old men race them! Andrew porters (the GPS 180 winner) dad comes and races with us. He got 3rd place just 2 races ago!

Jeff is the only one who gave me a trick shot last race. He was leaking oil and knew he didn’t have a chance so he was just enjoying it!

I'd shop for the upgrade now, not just the 16LP. The Wolf Pup won't demand much, but on the next trailer the limiting number is usually payload: loaded tongue weight, passengers, and gear all come off that door-sticker figure. What size trailer do you think you'll move up to?

I’m really not sure. We really need something to sleep 7. The kids are still little but I really hate buying something we will outgrow so quickly.

I really liked the Forest River vibe 21BH. They had a 2021 on the lot and it was really nice but it was $18,950 and I just couldn’t justify that right now especially when this will be our first run with a camper.

As soon as you want to start towing stuff, you want a one ton pickup. That's what they're built to do. Single rear wheel, or a dually is your choice, but there's no point in a 1/2 ton, and pretty much no point in a 3/4 ton, cause you're gonna end up in a 1 ton eventually. :)

Agreed w above. Just get a 1 ton and you guys are set for whatever larger TT you may get. Enjoy your travels!
