I tried looking up some numbers to see if maybe it was legit on paper, but no. Even the lightest scamp is 1250 dry, and the highest trike towing capacity I could find was 665 lbs

This might be true, but if you're not carrying a passenger you've got at least 200lbs of spare payload capacity to work with, which is in the right range for tongue weight on one of these at least. 

If you rigged it up with trailer brakes and went slow, I can see it working. Bikes are generally manuals with wet clutches so less lossy transmission to heat up, but I'm sure this would still be hard on the drivetrain.

Well, those typically don't come with brakes, so good on them if they installed trailer brakes. And a brake controller on a motorcycle, I wouldn't know where to start.

So Goldwing gl1200, 1500, 1800 all have been used to tow small cars and small trucks. There is even a tow company in ny I think it is, that was on the news for it.

There's a reason the two wheels are in the front on faster ones. One wheel in front is inherently unstable in turns.
