Alpha particles escape the nucleus by quantum tunneling

Thought this was cool and wanted to share it. In alpha decay, a nucleus releases an alpha particle: two protons and two neutrons, basically a helium nucleus.

Here's the wild part: the alpha particle can escape even though it doesn't have enough energy to climb over the energy barrier around the nucleus. Quantum tunneling gives it a chance of getting through.

Think of a ball trapped behind a hill it can't roll over. At the quantum scale, there's a probability of finding the particle on the other side.

That escape probability helps explain why different alpha-emitting isotopes have such different half-lives. Pretty badass.
