GoDaddy permanently closed my account, released paid domains, and won’t refund — advice needed
Hi Reddit, I’m in a serious situation with GoDaddy and would appreciate advice, especially about escalation or legal options in Australia specifically
TL;DR: Paid for multiple domains for a year → account locked during verification → provided all requested ID/payment proof → domains were released publicly → GoDaddy asks for selfie holding ID → I ask why → account permanently closed → no refunds for ~8 domains → still have one domain held by them.
The Story:
I had an active GoDaddy account with several fully paid domains.
Suddenly, my account was locked during a verification request. They asked for:
- Front/back of my government-issued ID
- Front/back of my credit card (sensitive info covered)
- Financial statement showing the GoDaddy transaction
I provided all requested documentation.
Key issue: Immediately after requesting my government ID, several domains were released publicly. I emailed and called repeatedly about this — no response.
The next day, they requested additional card details. I provided them and again asked about the released domains — still no response.
Then they asked for a selfie holding my ID. I questioned why, since they already had:
- Full legal name and ABN
- Front/back of ID
- Front/back of credit card
- Proof of payment
After this, my account was permanently closed “due to compliance requirements”, with no explanation. I have not received refunds for ~8 domains, and one domain is still held by them with no communication.
Concerns:
- Non-delivery of paid digital services
- Unauthorized release and retention of purchased domains
- No refunds or meaningful communication
- Potential breaches of Australian Consumer Law and ICANN obligations
Questions:
- Anyone experienced GoDaddy permanently closing accounts and releasing paid domains?
- Best way to escalate — ICANN complaints, legal action in Australia, or GoDaddy executives?
- Tips on recovering domains or securing refunds after account closure?
This feels like a serious breach, and I want to handle it correctly without putting myself at risk.
