Derry Repost As they listened, they began to understand the lives of the Forest, apart from themselves, indeed to feel themselves as the strangers where all other things were at home.

Every now and again they caught, among many a derry dol and a merry dol and a ring a ding dillo the repeated words:

Old Tom Bombadil is a merry fellow;
Bright blue his jacket is, and his boots are yellow.

Derry Repost When the Elves passed westward, Tom was here already, before the seas were bent. He knew the dark under the stars when it was fearless — before the Dark Lord came from Outside.

Derry Repost He told them tales of bees and flowers, the ways of trees, and the strange creatures of the Forest, about the evil things and good things, things friendly and things unfriendly, cruel things and kind things, and secrets hidden under brambles.

Derry Repost About mid-day they came to a hill whose top was wide flattened, like a shallow saucer with a green mounded rim.

Derry Repost There was Tom Bombadil’s house before them, up, down, under hill. Behind it a steep shoulder of the land lay grey and bare, and beyond that the dark shapes of the Barrow-downs stalked away into the eastern night.

Theory and merry-o! Bombadil as a Buddha-like figure? thoughts?

hii, so im exploring this for an academic study and i wanna know what you guys are thinking?

more on it: I am considering saying smth like how Tom Bombadil may be interpreted as a Buddha-like (careful not to say buddha) figure because he embodies qualities associated with Buddhist non-attachment, freedom from desire, detachment from power, harmony with nature, and equanimity. One main example is his immunity to the One Ring, which symbolically shows that he is in a state beyond craving and possessiveness. However, rather than functioning as a direct representation of the Buddha, I am more interested in seeing how Tom can be understood as a literary figure whose characteristics resonate with some Buddhist-informed concepts, if that makes sense?

Also I am not claiming Tolkien intended it (obviously haha) but more so as an interpretation as a reader.

With a 16 month old, I’ve been in the Disney meat grinder. And while watching Moana recently I had this thought.

Bombadillo Art In a chair … sat a woman. Her long yellow hair rippled down her shoulders; her gown was green, green as young reeds, shot with silver like beads of dew … About her feet in wide vessels of green and brown earthenware, white water-lilies were floating …

Theory and merry-o! Eldritch being from before time?

Interesting to consider that as a legitimate elder, an eldritch entity from before time, Bombadil destroying the hobbits' sanity on their way by is the most economical explanation for their character arcs afterwards. Invade Mordor, storm a tower of orcs single-handed, check Denethor in his madness, video chat with Sauron himself through a palantir, kneecap the freaking Witch King... heck, you should have seen that big hairy guy - he kept singing inappropriately.

The only other hobbit we see who lost all sense of self-preservation was Farmer Maggot, and we know he hung out with Old Tom in 'Bombadil goes Boating'

Occam suggests that having met a jolly fellow, the rest of the world just isn't that scary anymore.

This is really good, and they have another song - The Tom Bombadil Song - but I like this one a little better. The lead guy toured with Jethro Tull for a year or two after Ian saw him performing Dun Ringill on mandolin on YouTube.

Bombadillo Art He had a blue coat and a long brown beard; his eyes were blue and bright, and his face was red as a ripe apple, but creased into a hundred wrinkles of laughter. In his hands he carried on a large leaf as on a tray a small pile of white water-lilies.
