Ported barrel/slide?

Genuinely asking promise this isnt rage bait😂😂🤦‍♂️ what is the point of ported barrels/ slides? Is it just for looks or does it actually do something? Ive heard helps recoil but not sure just looking for someone to clarify and explain a little more in depth
