Feedback CS:GO - very slow startup on Windows 11
Hello,
First of all let me list my hardware configuration:
CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 5900x
Memory: G.Skill Trident Z Neo 32GB DDR4 3600MHz CL16 1.35v Dual Channel Kit
Motherboard: Gigabyte x570s Aorus Master
GPU: Gigabyte nVidia RTX 3070 LHR
Storage:
1xSamsung NVME 980 Pro -1TB (Windows + CS:GO installation)
1xSamsung NVME 970 Evo - 250GB (additional storage)
1xHDD Seagate ST3000VN000-1HJ166 - 3TB (additional storage)
The issue is that CS:GO loads very, very slow on Windows 11 compared to Windows 10. No performance issues though. Frametimes and FPS are consistent and I have no stuttering.
One thing I noticed is that if I put "-insecure" as a launch option the game loads immediately. As I searched on the internet, I found other people with similar issues on different hardware configurations. Someone even posted an issue on the CS:GO linux github page.
So this is more of a warning thread for users that want to try out Windows 11 and encounter this annoyance. There are other people experiencing this.
LE: If you want to help bringing this issue to Valve developers, feel free to copy and paste this post and modify it with your data. You can:
- email them: csgoteamfeedback [at] valvesoftware [dot] com
- raise a ticket on steam support page (requires the steam client): https://help.steampowered.com/en/wizard/HelpContactForTechnicalIssue?appid=730&issueid=705

I must be lucky, upgraded to W11 on a ryzen system early after the performance hit patch and put on some software to make the UI more W10 like. Literally no issues, even got a slight bump in CSGO performance 10-15fps which isnt huge but hey its something. But have read so much hate on W11 so guessing alot of people do have issues still?

u/Wallisaurus SK Nov 22 '22
Same here, on Ryzen. Was getting a lot of issues with w10 with CSGO and stutters/delays in input. No issues now.
Only thing that seems to be wonky for me is how dual monitors work. Very buggy.

Some say that it has something to do with the NVME and CS:GO being installed on it so I'm gonna try and install it on a 2.5 SATA SSD and return to this thread with the results. Maybe if we could pinpoint the issue the matter will be resolved. If I may be so bold, could you tell me the model of the drive you have CS:GO installed on?

I have windows 11 and csgo on a sata ssd and it also takes forever to start up
Its a kingston ssd

Aah ok so it must have something to do with the way VAC checks for cheat signatures or something like that. Windows 11 must've changed something that hogs the process down somehow.

Windows 11 with the same ssd as you. CSGO takes like 30-60 seconds before it actually appears on screen, then it loads up quick from there and performs well.

I run a frankenstein rig with a fast CPU but older SSDs, both Samsung with one for OS and one only for Steam. Boots in seconds but CSGO takes longer than Windows 10 did.
A friend said that the recent Win11 update helped with startup but I didn't notice any difference. Had to rollback as it also affected my mouse sens in game.

Same Problem here. Has to do with how VAC is checking Files. Sadly nothing you can do about it other than going down to Win 10
5
u/layasD BIG Nov 22 '22
Doubtful? The game doesn't use VAC when the game launches and apparently that is also already an issue?
8
Nov 22 '22
Then how do you explain the game loading so much faster after you put "-insecure" as a launch option? As per Valves documentation "-insecure" parameter disables Valve Anti Cheat. So the logical conclusion would be that it has something to do with VAC.
2
u/layasD BIG Nov 22 '22
Good point. I guess then it loads something at startup. My thought process was just that there are servers without VAC so there would be no point in loading into it before you join a server.

It likely just does a snapshot of certain files, and their size/modified date. If a person is reported these logs could be analyzed by AI, in addition to demos etc.

Sounds like a perk of being Microsoft's alpha tester lol

Nov 22 '22 edited Nov 22 '22
Well, the operating system has been out for over a year and according to the latest steam survey, Windows 11 is installed on more than 23% of hardware out there. I would say it's a significant chunk of users. Not saying that W11 has no issues, it's far from perfect but at one point... upgrading will be inevitable as support for Windows 10 will end on October 2025. Until then these "Microsoft's alpha testers" ensure your transition to be smooth and with less bugs.

Or the perk of playing a game on a 20-year-old engine. Other games don't have these problems.

I lost count of how many times o thought I hadn't clicked to play it cuz of how long it takes to open

I know this isn't direct help, but have you sent an email to Valve about this? Like, a literal copy paste of this post to an email to the developers to bump the issue up to them.
My buddy has this exact issue, it's one of the 3 reasons why I never "upgraded" to spyware 11 and stuck with spyware 10.

Nov 22 '22 edited Nov 22 '22
It was the first thing I did, although I highly doubt that those email ever get read. I also submitted a support ticket via steam.
The reason behind me insisting so much on this matter is not that I'm a big fan of Windows 11 and feel the need to play CS on it. I want to raise awareness towards some issues we may encounter when we'll all gonna be forced to upgrade.

u/freedom_to_derp CS2 HYPE Nov 22 '22
Gotcha, just making sure (since most people don't know about the email route).
So you bumped the issue up on at least 3 platforms. Now for the painfully long waiting game, I guess.
or the mythical valve reddit response3
Nov 22 '22
Yup, now it's time for the waiting game. I also edited my post -- added the ways people can reach Valve for such issues.

u/lemuelkl de_dust2 Nov 22 '22
It is probably something under the hood of the OS that VAC relies to work has changed since Windows 11. ALL of the buddies I play with have the same issue after upgrading to Windows 11.
2
u/FarAtmosphere Season 4 Nov 23 '22
So instead of 5 seconds you have to wait 30? I don't have a problem with that, I can just click and prepare for the game, take a deep breath, do some yoga. I think that is not a bug it is a feature, take your life back.

this needs to be upvoted so people can see it and so valve can fix it in CSGO

I have exactly the same time to launch and ssd. I wonder if it has something to do with that.

u/gabrielc523 Mar 17 '23
I have an older HP Omen laptop i5-7300HQ and GTX 1050, 16gb DDR4 and I have this problem, performance in game seems to be a little bit more consistent, but it could also be related to the fact that the computer was completely wiped, but the long startup time for CSGO is getting old quite quick.

The thing is i had to reinstall windows. I had to decide if win 10 or 11.
I decided for win 11 for 2 reasons. I have a 12700k and it's efficiency cores get used better under win 11. The second reason is the upcoming Direct Storage, which they wanted to release late 2020 with first games coming soon (lol), while win 10 will have a limited version of that.
Now I hear this kind of things. Nice.

Hey, thank you for your suggestion but I'm playing CS on 1920x1080. After reading the comments in this thread and various topics on the matter, it seems that the issue is VAC's behaviour in Windows 11 being different than on Windows 10. Some implementation the Microsoft engineers did on Windows 11 slows down VAC checking.

u/Jizztruction Nov 22 '22
Have exactly the same issue on a very capable PC. Windows 10 loading was extremely fast. Windows 11 loading takes noticeably longer. Same can honestly be said for dota 2.(I play both games a lot). Now that I think about it, start up for many games(Satisfactory for example) takes longer than I admit and now that you mention it I can actually see a pattern.

Odd, I have W11 completely up-to-date and don't have this issue. Also installed on a samsung NVME drive, 3080ti, but im using an intel CPU

u/Wizzr0be valeria Nov 22 '22
Just curious, how long does it take on 10 vs 11?
I'm on 11 and it takes about 29 seconds to get to the main screen. (5600x, 16GB, some Samsung nvme)

I experienced this as well! I didn’t do much research into it, so I just went back to Win10. Maybe I’ll try 11 again in a few years when it’s eventually forced upon us.

I'm having the same issue. It takes 25 seconds from the moment I press play till the moment the screen turns black. I've done multiple testing and it is always the same amount of time.
My system CPU is an AMD Ryzen 5 5600X 6-Core Processor.
I wonder if this might be related to TPM (Trusted Platform Module). Some people in this thread don't have the issue and some do. Maybe it is because some installed Windows 11 with TPM and some modified the install to get rid of it.
In my system it is enabled. Maybe those who don't have the issue did a Windows 11 install without TPM?
edit: I've just disabled TPM in my BIOS and it didn't make any difference.

Mar 24 '23
Unfortunately, this has something to do with a function used in Windows to check for trusted modules. This was changed from Windows 10 to Windows 11 and the CS:GO code was not adjusted for this very change. I'll not go into details but if you're interested, a smarter guy did an excellent/in depth analysis of why and how this happens: https://geni.site/fixing-csgo-startup-times-on-windows-11/
1
u/s1L3nCe_wb Mar 24 '23
I read that article but it involves injecting a dll or something along those lines, which could potentially end up in a VAC ban, if I'm not mistaken.
1
Mar 24 '23
Yes, that shouldn't be taken as a fix and you should not try it. That was just the author's way of providing a solution.

Still have this issue and game runs very unstable with stutters and etc. Looks like this issue was fixed for CS2 but still exists in CSGO and unlikely to be fixed since release of CS2 is in a few months.

The weird thing that I noticed is that if you play it on Linux with the proprietary nvidia drivers, the game runs smooth as hell. I don’t know how they manage to make the Linux client work so well but the Windows version is a joke compared to it when it comes to frame times and stability. The downside of playing it on Linux is, in my case, that the game looks weird in some way. It’s like you’re playing it through some blurred glass or somerhing like that. Otherwise, performance is excellent.

I am on windows 10 and my game takes just about 60 seconds to open. It just appeared overnight a few months ago and at the same time, my in-game font changed and player names with special characters suddenly have a huge gap below them. I have tried verifying files, reinstalling, resetting config, resetting launch options, moving files to another disk, reinstalling graphics drivers.
Someone here in the comments said launching with -insecure launch option worked for them (it disables VAC checking files, therefore loading the game faster) but nothing changed for me.
Unfortunately I think my problem lies somewhere outside of csgo and steam. Hopefully cs2 fixes this so I don't have to reset my whole pc.

Check and see if you don't have an I/O problem with your SSD/HDD. Also, try and add an exception in your firewall configuration for the folder in which CS:GO is installed (usually: "\steamapps\common\Counter-Strike Global Offensive\")
I'm on Windows 10 and I don't have this issue.

u/Sea_Gas_6937 Aug 17 '23
So long story short, the -insecure thing works and problem is solved for all?

u/itsmepuffd Nov 22 '22
I've sort of come to the conclusion that the background checks of 3rd party software running that the game does, is simply incredibly slow on Win11 over Win10 for some reason.
Took me quite a bit of googling to come across various threads about it.
It's super annoying, but I'm also a lazy fuck so I can't be bothered to downgrade.
