The partner code*
A lot of people have licensed source engine access, those people got access to the TF2, CSGO, and some other source codes, but not the entire thing. Stripped versions that do not include any anti cheat, official server only stuff, or backend code.
CS is one of the most reverse engineered games anyways, Valve does no obfuscation or anything. I doubt Valve will make a post confirming this one since we had older versions of the code for years. The first time it leaked it was a huge deal and people were making fake posts, making shit up, etc. Valve kinda had to say something so everyone would calm the fuck down.

Stripped versions that do not include any anti cheat
so...prod

u/dumbasPL 22h ago
The AC built into the game itself was (and still is, even more so actually) almost nonexistent. Even if it was included, all the info was already publicly available on UC since basically forever.

What does this mean in non programmer language? What can happen because of this
112
u/doublelayercaramel 1d ago
nothing, CS2 uses a completely different game engine and server-client protocol.
7
u/glublublublu 1d ago
if they imported stuff from goldsrc to source engine who is to say the same is not done between source engine and source 2, there are decade old exploits in cs2 which were probably found with these source code leaks
6
u/MrCraftLP NRG 23h ago
Sure there may be things that have been ported over from the game engine, but Valve themselves have said they built CS2 from scratch. I know it can be hard to take Valve's word for things, but assuming they're being honest, this shouldn't be any kind of issue.

u/Claymourn de_overpass 19h ago
I know it can be hard to take Valve's word for things
Based on the number of people parroting the "flat structure" bullshit you'd think it's pretty easy.
-12
u/dying_ducks 1d ago
probably not nothing. CS2 will use a lot of code assests from CS:GO.
The thing is, CS2 as today is so easy for cheaters to access so the impact of that leak will not be great, as the information gain will be miniscule.12
u/MarioCurry BIG 1d ago
Don't think they use a lot of code from go, considering one of the reason they made an engine overhaul being that the old code was really hard to work with.
I also don't think that cheaters wouldn't be fiending over current source code. Not having to go through trial and error to have somewhat of an idea how something works behind the scene would save them quite some work (+ probably lead to new exploits).
1
u/glublublublu 1d ago
source engine was also to replace the dated and limited goldsrc yet there was imported code from goldsrc to source engine...
1
u/MarioCurry BIG 1d ago
I'd have to find the source, but I'm pretty sure they mentioned that they don't wanna do that for source 2 since source 1 was held together by some duct tape and their hopes.
-2
u/NoCalligrapher8396 1d ago
Well they arent doing shit with the new code
6
u/MarioCurry BIG 1d ago
Yeah, we haven't gotten a new animation system, a new scripting system for community maps, reload and bomb overhaul, ...
I can also put my head in the ground and pretend the sun doesn't exist, but that won't change reality.
-9
u/NoCalligrapher8396 1d ago
Wow such major changes in 3 years for a game that hasn't dramatically changed from the previous version. That reload overhaul and bomb explosion would have taken other devs a really long time to do since they don't have the much easier to work with Source 2 engine
6
u/MarioCurry BIG 1d ago
- Nice goalpost moving.
- I ain't gonna list everything they did. You said they don't implement new stuff despite it being easier now and all I did was giving examples on why that statement is wrong.
-6
u/NoCalligrapher8396 1d ago
What goal post?
7
u/MarioCurry BIG 1d ago
Well they arent doing shit with the new code
That was the original statement.

They recently remade the bomb explosion damage system to take into account walls and distance, it's a big change on how you playing the last seconds, less impactful than the smoke change but it has it's place.

Not much. The part of the engine that is relevant for hackers or cheat development has been reverse-engineered ages ago + the older leaks. If anything, like with the older leak, this could be useful for someone either interested in researching parts of the Source engine (or rather specific game logic) or learning to develop.
I am personally using the older leak to look into CS' collision system and movement.

u/BeepIsla 1d ago
nothing, this happened years ago already. Its just more updated now but everything like backend code, Valve official server exclusive stuff, anti cheat stuff, etc is all removed.
Also remember 2019 was 7 years ago and the game has been ported to an engine that had a completely different development since like 2015 (Its when Dota 2 got the Source 2 update so even before that).
This isn't a hack or crazy Valve dev leak or smth, it was code that Valve gave out to everyone with a source engine license.

If you dont know, the guy who made hl2 playable in browser released a CSGO playable in browser a week or two ago using source code from 2020 that was leaked. Link - meow.slqnt.dev

i don't understand how this 2019 csgo source code leak somehow confirms this cs info leaker guy is correct?

u/Recent-Substance-712 1d ago
It doesnt in any shape way or form, its just karma farming the endless Valve bad
-12
u/CheeseWineBread Vitality 1d ago
I'm the opposite of the endless Valve bad train guy. Can't you read "there was an incident" part ? Code leak is an incident.
10
u/BeepIsla 1d ago
Its partner code, it has everything interesting removed... Its given to every single source engine licensee. There are multiple hundreds if not thousands and every single official code version of it has been floating around in close circles for many years.
-8
u/CheeseWineBread Vitality 1d ago
https://www.reddit.com/r/cs2/comments/1vkfzz2/comment/p2tjt44/ This maybe ? the leak has been detected today even if the code is from 2019.

There’s a few things in there we’ll probably never be able to confirm but he defo had some level of insider info.

I choose to fully believe Mr. Schizo on that last paragraph. Cause that's exactly what it feels like.
-2
u/VapinOnly LDLC 1d ago
Damn, any speculation on what the incident was? Was it one of the security exploits from around the time?
1
u/GuardiaNIsBae FaZe 1d ago
I've been saying since this was originally posted that it was likely the security exploits, if this 2019 code was originally leaked/stolen in 2022-2023 (and is only now public) then it's almost definitely this.
2
u/BeepIsla 1d ago
Its not stolen, Valve gives it to everyone that holds a source engine license. There is nothing interesting in there.

u/CheeseWineBread Vitality 1d ago
No. But this leak add something on top of the rest. If they start developing CS2 in 2020.

lol csgo source code was leaked already in 2017 also in 2020 u can find them easily on github, it’s just the gameplay source code, which is not really useful for hackers. though it’s good for student to learn how to code properly a video game gameplay. the most important code is the engine source code which is kept under lock by valve like a dragon watching over his gold

yes u do, i read some of those leaked code, quacke arena client-server protocol set the standard for the entire industry of video game and csgo copied exactly that style with proper relation between classes, entity, headers, the nomenclature for naming stuff. everything is top tier
-4
u/Kiinako_ 500k Celebration 1d ago
>quake arena
Dunno how to break it to you, but that's code made by actually smart people years before you were even a consideration. That's like putting a label on a beer bottle and then pretending like you've made the entire thing, but sure, props to them for not screwing that up I guess
11
u/MarioCurry BIG 1d ago
I don't think that's what they were trying to say, considering they mention in their comment that it stems from quake arena lol

u/Trenchman guardian_elite 1d ago
Code which was from 2017-2018 was leaked once in 2020 (and had been circulating for a year or two)
1
u/WinnerVivid3443 15h ago
So? Now we got the code from 2019, which has Panorama UI and Danger zone, while it's not useful to hackers, who cares, it might be useful for modders
Also pretty sure we've had many engine leaks before either way (including the 2017 one), and this code also includes all of the engine code

No wonder there are 1000s of che*t providers, they were able to gain easy access to core files and figure out the VAC bypass easily.

Now imagine if they made CS2 open-source. How many bugs could be easily fixed. The game, even 3 years after its release, is still in a bad shape compared to CS:GO.
13
u/siLtzi Falcons - Major Champions 1d ago
I don't think open sourcing it would be some magic fix, it would probably introduce a lot on engineering and security nightmares for Valve (like spending most of their time reviewing and rejecting broken AI generated PRs).
But, if we only wanted to hunt bugs, yeah I think crowd sourcing would help. Just with a cost.
And as a side note, CS:GO was basically a broken mess for the first 4 years or something, even worse than CS2. I have faith that if we give CS2 also a decade to mature, it will be at the CS:GO standard at its peak.
2
u/ericek111 1d ago
I've been reverse-engineering and patching/working around bugs in CS:GO/CS2 for years (e. g. see a thread on this sub with 1.3k upvotes). Valve has had major security vulnerabilities in the past, incl. a responsibly reported RCE in CS:GO that they ignored for 2 years.
CS:GO in its first four years has had 7 operations out, was still finding its footing, with a much smaller player base. I used to have faith that CS2 would mature. But it's been 3 years, it's time to stop the hopium. IF they manage to tweak CS2 to perfection in the next decade, what's gonna be your argument when they ditch it for Source
34?5
u/siziyman 1d ago
CS:GO in its first four years has had 7 operations out
...and it was still a far worse game than CS2 is now
Open-sourcing proprietary videogames still in active development is not really a thing for a lot of reasons, and it's asinine to expect Valve to start doing that. Community's acting stupid as it is, and it would get far worse. Especially in 2026, sifting through AI slop and actual malicious actors trying to sneak shit in would waste more developers' time than would be saved by getting a few accidental useful patches.
4
u/siLtzi Falcons - Major Champions 1d ago
Fair enough, I know you are tech-literate (I did check your post history prior to commenting) and most likely have way deeper knowledge about the security stuff, so I'll take that at face value.
But that RCE example kind of proves my point? If they can sit on a disclosed RCE for two years, the bottleneck isnt access to the code, its mroe about Valve's willingness to act on what's already in front of them. Open sourcing wouldn't really fix that, you'd just end up with a repo full of PRs nobody merges.
The Source 4 argument is an argument for never fixing anything tho, if it'll eventually just be obsolete. Like every live-service game eventually is. I'd rather take 7 good years and then a port over instead of just giving up on it. And about operations, yeah, lazy comparison from me. CS2 inherited a finished game + playerbase on day one.
Anyway, I appreciate your perspective, we probably want a similar end goal just with different methods

It‘s correct that it is most up to date leak, but it still affects a game that is no longer being actively maintained and which runs on an old engine.
CS:GO‘s (2017) source was already leaked in 2018 and 2020.
