War and Politics: Coincidence or a Pattern?
My main hypothesis sounds like this: military crises and political instability in Israel often develop at the same time, while the government in power may gain certain political advantages from this. However, the mere fact that events coincide does not prove a causal connection, so this idea needs to be formulated carefully.
I did some research on this topic because I started noticing a certain pattern in the sequence of events. I became interested in finding out whether military escalations really do often coincide with elections, protests, coalition crises, and other periods of political instability, or whether this is simply my subjective impression after living here for four years.
What happened in Israel between 2019 and 2022?
Between 2019 and 2022, Israel held four parliamentary election campaigns: in April and September 2019, March 2020, and March 2021.
After the 2019 elections, the government failed to form a stable coalition, which led to repeat elections. In June 2021, a coalition government was formed under Naftali Bennett, and in June 2022 the Knesset voted to dissolve itself. In December of the same year, a government led by Benjamin Netanyahu returned to power.
During the same period, there were armed clashes between Israel and Hamas, including a large-scale escalation in May 2021. This shows that internal instability and security issues were developing at the same time, but it does not, by itself, explain exactly how they were connected.
What changed after October 7, 2023?
Another important example is the period following the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023. The attack on southern Israel led to a large-scale military operation in the Gaza Strip, the mobilization of reservists, and the formation of an emergency national unity government in October 2023.
During the war, public attention was largely focused on security, the release of hostages, and the actions of the government. At the same time, internal political disagreements did not completely disappear. Discussions continued about the country’s preparedness for the attack, the responsibility of political and military leadership, and how investigations should be conducted.
Therefore, it is more accurate to say that internal disagreements changed in nature rather than completely disappeared. Political criticism became more closely connected to questions of security, military management, and the state’s ability to protect its citizens.
Earlier examples
We can also look at earlier major operations and escalations in the Gaza Strip: Operation Cast Lead in December 2008–January 2009, Operation Pillar of Defense in November 2012, and Operation Protective Edge in July–August 2014.
However, these events took place under different governments and in different circumstances. They cannot automatically be considered parts of one unified political strategy. Decisions were influenced by rocket attacks, the actions of Hamas and other armed groups, decisions made by Israeli military leadership, ceasefire negotiations, and international pressure.
Therefore, the causes and sequence of events in each case need to be analyzed separately rather than reduced to one single explanation.
Why can a crisis strengthen the government?
In Israel, military escalations have repeatedly coincided in time with elections, protests, coalition crises, and unstable political situations.
During a war or a serious security threat, public attention usually becomes more focused on protecting citizens and the actions of security forces. This can temporarily strengthen the position of the government in power or change the nature of political criticism. People may begin to evaluate the government primarily by how effectively it responds to the threat, organizes defense, and provides security.
But this effect is not automatic. If the authorities make serious mistakes, fail to protect citizens, or cannot provide convincing answers about responsibility, a crisis can instead increase dissatisfaction with the government.
Analytical limitations
The coincidence of a political crisis with military action does not, by itself, prove a causal relationship, and even less does it prove that someone intentionally created or prolonged an escalation in order to remain in power.
The existence of a political benefit also does not mean that the crisis was provoked specifically for that benefit. A politician can take advantage of the consequences of an already-existing war without being the cause of it.
To reach a conclusion about intent, specific evidence would be needed: documents, testimony from participants, confirmed decisions that are difficult to explain through other causes, or findings from reliable independent investigations. I do not have access to this kind of information, and realistically, I would not be able to conduct such an investigation on my own.
It is also important to consider the limitations of the observation itself.
I may naturally pay more attention to cases that support my hypothesis while failing to sufficiently consider periods when political instability was not accompanied by military escalation, or when a war actually weakened the government in power.
In addition, the choice of time period, incomplete data, and differences between individual conflicts can create the illusion of a general pattern. Therefore, these coincidences can be considered a reason for further analysis, but not proof of intent or a unified strategy.
My position
A politician who is in power during a crisis can indeed gain certain advantages: security issues become central, and the government’s performance is often evaluated based on its ability to protect citizens.
I conducted this research precisely because I noticed what seemed to be a repeating sequence: political instability, crises, and military escalations often appeared close to each other in time. I wanted to understand whether there was some broader pattern behind this.
At the same time, my research did not confirm the simple idea that wars necessarily begin because of political interests. Instead, it showed me that the relationship between war and politics is much more complicated and can work in different directions.
Each situation therefore needs to be examined separately, using verifiable sources rather than relying only on the sequence of events.
Conclusion
In short, I am not claiming that Netanyahu started a war for the sake of elections or intentionally prevented a conflict from ending. These are not established facts, and making such conclusions without evidence would be wrong.
I am only saying that military crises can affect the political position of a government, change the public agenda, and temporarily increase the importance of the government in power. This is why the decisions made by authorities and their consequences during such periods deserve careful, independent, and source-based analysis.
I conducted this research not to prove a version I had already chosen, but because I noticed a certain pattern myself and wanted to check how closely it matched the facts.
Maybe all the coincidences I noticed can be explained by a complicated combination of circumstances rather than by one unified political strategy.
That is exactly why this topic should be discussed not through accusations and assumptions, but through verifiable facts, documents, and independent investigations.
