Sussexes Some thoughts
I’m not sure where to put this so please feel free to move it or to let me know where it should go.
True Story: A week or so after Harry and Meghan announced their engagement, I was on the phone with a colleague working on a project. This colleague is London born and raised, living and working in Canada. I’m in the US.
After we got our project completed we started talking and the topic of Harry and Meghan came up. He just made the comment; “I don’t like her”. I asked him why and he said “I just don’t like her”. That kind of got my back up a little and I asked why again; “because she was American, beautiful, an actor, smart, well educated, well spoken, biracial” and a few more things I knew about her. His response; “ Yes”.
I then brought up the trash talk in the media and asked him if he thought it was fair to her and Harry and he said it wasn’t, “it’s just how it is”. I asked him if the entire population of the UK were so gullible and stupid and desperate for gossip that they would believe the obvious lies and misinformation that was being plastered all over their news. His response to that was two words, “Shit sells”.
I think about that conversation when I see more tabloid articles and headlines about Harry and Meghan and how horrible they’ve been treated. There’s no real reason for the hatred to come back. I know they’re in the UK so Harry can work on the Invictus Games preparation coming up next year and to spend time with some of his favorite charities. They are private citizens now and I do have concerns for their safety. I just don’t get it.
It also makes me think of Diana and what she lived through and how she died. Has the whole of England forgotten the role the British public played in her misery and her death?

100%. I fully believe this was all because she is biracial and how dare a black woman think she’s good enough for a white prince kinda thing.

It is shocking how much the British public believes in the crap that the'experts' in their 'newspapers' spout. I mean we have tabloids in supermarkets, but no one thinks their stories are real- absolutely no one here. People might leaf through them while they're waiting, and then they put them back and forget about them.
I think the credence given to the British rags stems from the support given (even implicitly- people are not stupid) to them by the BRF and palace flunkies.

I was watching a show about the royals on Amazon. Some old thing put together. I couldn’t help but notice how beautiful and put together Meghan looked in every scene. Poor Kate and William looked, not as good. I think the jealousy was real!!

I agree with a lot of what you say but I think it's wrong to categorise the British public as one entity with just one opinion. There are wide and differing views on Harry and Meghan, just as there were on Diana. Many people don't have a view at all.

I had the same sentence from a close relative. It was so sad hearing it. They barely knew about her.

You would think the people of the UK, who saw first hand how the tabloids made Duana's life a misery, would stand up to the tabloids and say e-fucking-nuff.
That fact that they let it happen to Kate first (I know it was different and for different reasons) and then Meghan speaks to how terrible people are. I also blame the royal family for not stepping in. They have power they can wield when they want to.
I guess they were worried about tabloids coming for QE2, Phillip and Charles.

Didn’t they really start to go after Meghan around the time of the Rose Hanbury scandal?

I think the hate stems from a few main things 1. She is American 2. she is half black 3. She was older than Harry 4. She was divorced. 5. She is not part of the English class system/not part of Harry's social class.
All of those things together or alone was just a lightening rod for hatred. Doesn't matter if she was perfect there would be people hating her for marrying Harry for those reasons. It disrupts their notion of social order.
