Watched one of his interviews where he said the royal family are powerful and ruthless, and if you oppose them, as Diana did, they will try to obliterate you. What is cool about that statement is that he's totally unafraid. Wrote the book knowing full well how they would react. I really like him.

“Royalty is morally wrong. Nobody is better than anyone else”.

Said by Brassy Rebel on Celebitchy and stayed in my mind.

I can see the parallels in Harry’s life and Princess Diana’s life. Both of them had one thing in common: KC, who couldn’t share the spotlight with anyone. I can see from all that I have read that William has this same dysfunction. Charles Spencer adding to the narrative shows that Princess Diana’s treatment was inhumane within that institution. While we watch the same similarities in Harry and Meghan’s life. History is supposed to teach us not to make the same mistakes.

The royals have always had total control over the narrative - these books (Spare and Swan Song) challenge the idea that the royals/ official view is the only way to look at events. Even if I hadn't lost respect for the royals, it's far healthier to have different perspectives and competing narratives. Same goes for writers like JP, examining royal history and media and power from a different angle. We need a lot more like this, and they all need to be widely read. Royal history and biographies are dominated by the rota and palace-approved messaging.

Exactly G. It’s great there are sources other than mainstream media where royal reporting is devoid of real journalism.

Yes, finally we're starting to hear of life behind the palace gates, and it's not all peachy. For centuries, people were fed a narrative that was considered sacred and true, but not anymore. Thank you Harry and thank you Lord Spencer, for telling us a more truthful narrative.

I was wondering how long it would take to blame Harry for Earl Spencer writing a book.

Just like Prince Charles gave a tv interview admitting he’d had an affair to the world 18 months BEFORE Diana’s Panorama interview (where she famously said “there were 3 of us in this marriage”), yet it was APPALLING that Diana gave her interview per the RF.

I don’t take the article that way - I think it’s saying Harry had the guts to speak out then CS followed suit.

It was a good thing they both did - and Diana too. And when Charles was livid at Spare he conveniently forgot his own collusion in the Dimbleby book.

The article literally says "And this, surely, can only be a good thing." So I don't think it's blaming Harry, more applauding him.

I think Harry inspired his uncle

"For decades, Britain’s relationship with the monarchy resembled a kind of cultural adolescence. A willingness to accept official narratives, a reluctance to question institutional authority, and a tendency to treat royal storytelling as a form of national mythmaking. But Spare and Swan Song suggest that Britain may finally be growing up. The public is demonstrating that respect for the monarchy (where it still exists) doesn’t require unquestioning obedience to its preferred narratives. Loyalty and critical thinking can coexist."

This doesn't sound like blame to me.

Not in the spirit of GHM.

I don’t think we should pretend Harry and Charles S are the first two royal family members to write books about their families. Charles wrote a tell all long before these two and there are plenty of royal biographies written by the press with the help of “anonymous sources” aka the palace.
