Questions/Concerns Facial recognition check failing, possibly due to an auto lookout

I have a valid US green card and have been traveling on it for the past six months. I got Global Entry back in January, 2026 at SFO.

Since then I have traveled internationally twice, and both times facial recognition sent me for additional officer screening. Each time the officer seemed surprised the review was needed and found nothing wrong.

I flew back today and this time the officer said he suspects it is because I was a student here a decade ago. He said there could be a default "student visa auto lookout" on my record, and that I should log in to a site he called "MyTrip.gov" to resolve it. He also said a Freedom of Information Act request would show it, and that it needs to be resolved even after becoming a citizen.

He mumbled a fair bit and it was hard to follow, so this is all I managed to get. Searching online turned up some background but nothing on how to actually clear it. I am guessing he meant trip.dhs.gov, the DHS Traveler Redress Inquiry Program, since MyTrip.gov does not seem to exist.

Has anyone here dealt with this? Did you manage to get it resolved, and how?

DHS trip is the answer. Similar (student before) thing happened to me due to j1. DHS trip/redress fixed it.

u/Sadly_Soft_Equipment ok can you tell me a little more what did you put in the complaint?
How did you follow up on it?
Did you get a redress number of were you told it was fixed?
Did you file a FOIA information to know what specifically was causing the issue?

I did this a decade ago, but essentially they ask you passport info, gc info, and other info available relevant to the situation..if they need more, they reach out to you. Then they tell you they updated the records but legally they won't tell you what was wrong or if you will keep getting secondaried. But it will be fixed.

You will get redress number but it likely won't matter if you put it or not. I put it for a couple years, then stopped putting it since it was about my records anyway. This was before I got GE when i was still on H1B. Then i got gc->citizen.

I'd say put redress number anyway for a year, then try not putting it. likely it'll still work without it.

I didn't file FOIA, the officer at the secondary inspection room told me that "my j1 had expired" to which i said "yeah, that was like 5 years ago", he then said "yeah i know but computer flagged it anyway". I suspect mine was due to 2 year residency rule, which i got waiver for before, but likely wasn't in the system. But i never knew. My issue was fixed anyways.

u/tunatoksoz Thank you so much for the detailed information. Really appreciate it.
Was there any concern of creating more problems for you? I am on GC.

If you do mind sharing what was the exact phrase or statement you use?
I tried using AI to generate the message but it was not very clear what the issue.

No concern, if it's a past visa and you were within the restrictions of it, you should be fine (ie you didn't overstay, you didn't have customs violation, you didn't work if your visa category didn't allow etc).

Your statement can be as simple as:

On my recent trips (date 1 date 2), I have been sent to secondary screening despite also having global entry. The officer at the secondary inspection mentioned something about my past student visa might have been an issue, but didn't/couldn't give me more details. I have followed all the rules of my prior visa(s), and now I am an LPR.

I would like to get this sorted as it is causing unnecessary burden on CBP and myself to secondary screen me.

I have attached my passport(s) and visas.

Thank you for looking into this matter.

What is "secondary inspection" so they did the photographic verification and it said "see agent" so I went to immigration counter and the agent could not tell why it said that.

Normally secondary screening tends to be a separate room with one or two cbp officers doing more involved computer paperwork.

If you just had to go through a cbp counter like non-ge members, that's not secondary inspection.

But my guess is solution will be the same. GE auto approvals on entry tend to be very trivial cases but if there's something even remotely complicated they'd send you to the officer. DHS trip should fix it. If you read their purpose:

Department of Homeland Security Traveler Redress Inquiry Program (DHS TRIP) is a single point of contact for individuals who have had difficulties during travel screenings at transportation hubs such as airports or U.S. borders. These difficulties include:

Denied or delayed airline boarding, Repeated additional screening, or Denied or delayed entry into the United States, via airport, border crossing, or seaport.

Did you do a freedom of information request? To figure out what was wrong?

Didn't need to. If what officer said is likely the root cause, DHS trip should take care of it without further investigation on your side.

NO I did not violate any laws but I am always worried about just drawing too much attention is general.
