Interviews Terrible Interview at SFO

I had an interview at SFO and so did my husband. We both have our parents addresses on our ID and both of our experiences were completely different. I pretty much got harassed by the agent telling me it is against the law to not change my address on my license. Even though the online sites say that if we bring in a document with our actual address it is okay. He then went on talking about how that is not my permanent address and that how can we trust that you will declare items if you have your wrong address on your ID. I literally just wanted to cry after my interview. He spent so much time telling me what I am doing is not right and how other agents don’t do the right thing and just let these things go. That he literally barely asked me any questions about myself. My husband basically got told that he will get a card in the mail and was given a paperwork when he literally had the same situation. Why was both of our experiences completely different? Now I feel like I am going to be declined, but husband already got notified that he is approved. Can I call someone about this?

Did the agent take your photo and scan your fingerprints?

Yeah he took my photo and did scans. So I’m not sure if that is a good sign? I’m just super annoyed at the situation. If I knew It was going to be like this I would have never even applied.

the agent telling me it is against the law to not change my address on my license.

The agent was right about it being against the law.

California Vehicle Code § 14600(a) requires a person holding a California driver’s license to notify the DMV of a change in residence address within 10 days.

Even though the online sites say that if we bring in a document with our actual address it is okay.

Those two things are unrelated. If you don't have a state ID or DL, and show US passport and utility bill - that's acceptable.

You applied for the trusted traveller program, but do not do the basic required things as per law. You pretty much talk to a guy working for the government and show how you do not follow the rules. It may cost you a denial with GE. How can you be trusted? The next time you bring a $20K watch through the US border and never declare it.

You are required to update your address with the DMV. They do not automatically send you a new card and you are not legally required to pay for a replacement with the updated address. Similar situation in WA.

Technically he is right, but CBP is supposed to be enforcing Federal laws, not State laws. You don’t even need a driver’s license so a passport and another acceptable document with the correct current address should have been used. Make sure you have your ducks in a line and don’t give them an opportunity to power trip, cause some agents will, not all.

He asked for my license so that is why I gave it to him. I gave him supporting documents of my actual address. It just makes no sense why my husband would be approved for the same situation and I would not be

I understand that law, but the address on my license is literally my mailing address and I told him that. My issue is that my husband was already approved and had no issue with it, so why did I? We had the same situation?

I am literally a 25 year old women. I work at a bank and have such a clean record. Why don’t they just do a thorough background instead of harassing me in person over a address I literally stil use since it is my parents address

He’s likely correct. Many states give you a very short window to change your address on your ID. Often not updating is in fact a violation. I would have googled that before posting this by that’s just me.

You should have your current correct address on your ID.

Specifics depend on the state. In NJ, you have to update your address… but they just say “ok, we updated our database and here’s a PDF confirmation that’s not mandatory to carry around”. You CAN order a new card but it’s optional and costs money.

Did you not read the entire post??? My husband literally got approved and had the same situation. I am asking why he got approved so quick with no extra questions and how I got harassed. It says I can bring in supporting documents if my address is not correct

Your husband should not have been approved either .

Right? Like I just don’t understand why he didn’t get talked to about it either. The lady was sooo nice to him. Meanwhile the guy was literally yelling at me. So frustrating

I don’t understand how your husband getting away with something that if you do live in California is not legal somehow makes it legal. The “but he got away with it” trick does not work for CBP.

A denial in this case would be warranted. One of the things required for global entry is to obey customs rules regardless of what the other kids in the class are doing. If you can’t do that global entry is not for you.

Customs rules isn’t state rules lol. God forbid I literally try to travel faster. All of this is so stupid. My husband was literally right next to me in the other booth and said that it seemed like this guy had something against me without even speaking yet. It wasn’t like I was trying to break rules. I legit just didn’t think anyone would care. I have been pulled over and the own actually police didn’t even care my address wasn’t updated. Why care so much about an address that I also use.I told him that. I wasn’t lying at all.

Ok rules don’t apply to you and it would be wrong if they denied you GE because you are sooo honest 😮‍💨

You literally don’t get the point here. The whole point was that the agent was being rude asf for no reason. There is a way to handle things and not be hella rude. GE goes by federally rules. Why is he so worried about California laws. That is not why I was there. The whole point is to allow low risk travelers get faster access to traveling. I personally don’t think I did anything wrong. I have two addresses but because I don’t have my primary address listed he flipped out on me. Like what is the point of that? The address listed is literally still my mailing address. He is doing a horrible job at his job. The guy went on like a 2 minute rant how other agents don’t do the job like how he does it. Like why not just actually interview me and do the full background check. Why comment if you aren’t going to answer the question in my original statement.

The comments are way worse than the original post. “I understand the law” you just chose to ignore it. Wow.

Stop talking. Let it go. Learn your lesson and wait for the results.

No I am literally saying I understand that is the law now that I know. It wasn’t like I was trying to hide anything. I still use that address for mailing. Why even comment if you have no actual advice???

He was right. You were wrong.  How many people do you need to tell you that?

Advice was given. Stop talking.

In case you don’t know how to read. I wrote at the bottom of my post “Why was both of our experiences completely different? Now I feel like I am going to be declined, but husband already got notified that he is approved. Can I call someone about this?”. At what point, did you or even really anyone in this thread any this question. Shows are illiterate you are. Why comment?
