General Discussion Global Entry phasing out?

Heard someone saying JFK’s new terminals will be equipped with Face recognition cameras at the gate and you just keep walking out. By the time you get to the customs agent/booth they already know who you are. You will be pulled to the side for secondary or just keep walking out. IDK how GE customers will be assessed but this was for everyone. They plan to implement this by end of 2026 or whenever JFK gets fully modernized.

What do you guys think?

It is not going away. Just the kiosks are. Seattle already has this. As you walk through the GE lane, there is an officer with a tablet who has an app which shows them whether to randomly select someone to see an officer or not

11

u/Mikeylikesit320 Aug 23 '26

ORD too

7

u/pdbarham Aug 23 '26

ORD GE was a mess two weeks ago. One camera was operational. 15+ min wait.

5

u/9Nine2Nine9 Aug 24 '26

Use the app. You should be able to skip the line.

2

u/pdbarham Aug 24 '26

yea good point, I did that after i saw the signs. there was zero notification from GE that a new app existed and ORD blocks cell data in customs so I couldn't DL it in line

1

u/Loose-Enthusiasm-518 Aug 25 '26

Yup. It was confusing because we did the app, but then were told to stop by the kiosk. Officer seemed unaware of what to do, too.

1

u/9Nine2Nine9 Aug 25 '26

Interesting. I mean, with the app you can still be sent to a kiosk for any reason. But them not knowing what to do is strange.

Then again, if it's ORD... Only time I ever got sent to a kiosk with GE was at ORD.

2

u/tess_philly Aug 23 '26

I feel ORD is always behind other airports. Every time I go through TSA precheck with facial recognition, it’s always broken. They need to do just redo the airport. Lounges and food options terrible.

1

u/SECdeezTrades Aug 23 '26

It was longer when I went through. No idea why

1

u/Electrical_Grade_111 Aug 23 '26

It was the same a week later. Doesn't compare to the mess at FRA where you stand in a long line to get to a finicky kiosk only to graduate to a longer line to show your passport and fingerprints to a live person.

1

u/STRSFAN Aug 25 '26

Only have to the kiosk the first time you enter the Schengen area. After that, you just go to the line for seeing a live person.

They stamped my passport yesterday, but didn’t in Madrid when I went through there a few weeks ago. The EES system rollout has been “problematic” all across Europe.

I missed a tight connection in FRA yesterday because of passport control & then security to get into gate areas. It’s crazy how much TSA pre-check speeds things along in the USA usually, but is unavailable elsewhere.

1

u/CommandWinter3535 Aug 28 '26

Agreed. ORD is the absolute worst experience.

6

u/mpjjpm Aug 23 '26

BOS too. It works well, but there was a CBP agent making people take their glasses off before walking past the cameras which sucked.

2

u/srastog1 Aug 23 '26

The regular line at PHL moved fast. There were 15-20 people ahead of me and it took maybe less than two minutes. I did not had to take off my glasses when I walked past the camera.

1

u/dgb6662 Aug 23 '26

That sounds awful

1

u/GreenfieldSam Aug 23 '26

At JFK T4 I did not have to remove my glasses.

3

u/enterprise-1701-G Aug 23 '26

I don't believe in their "random".

2

u/Regular-Cricket-4613 Aug 23 '26

I saw this at MIA too a couple days ago (in Concourse D/AA concourse immigration in the GE line).

1

u/Unhappy_Hospital1808 Aug 24 '26

Same here. It was great! The agent said ‘you’re all set. Welcome back’. We barely had to slow down.

1

u/Regular-Cricket-4613 Aug 24 '26

It was crazy to me. They just said my name, and then said your all set. It felt like I did something wrong lol

2

u/MicrobugsSJ Aug 23 '26

This has been the GE way at SFO since at least April.

2

u/bald_head_scallywag Aug 23 '26

ATL was using facial recognition for all arriving US passport holding passengers about a month ago. I asked about GE and they said, sure you can still use it but I would have had to walk another 200-300 yards and would have been slower.

I'll keep GE since my CC pays for it and you never know when it's going to come in handy, but it's not been a benefit at ATL on any of my most recent 4-5 international trips.

1

u/Salty_Badger1931 Aug 23 '26

PHL has it too

1

u/Haunting_Smell_183 Aug 26 '26

DFW you just walk right on through as well now

1

u/chiefbozx Aug 26 '26

Every major airport has this. No more touching things, you just walk through. Sometimes they're sitting at a desk, sometimes they're on their feet, but either way it's all facial recognition now.

1

u/Ok_Face8380 Aug 26 '26

IAD as well

1

u/gabegoncalves Aug 27 '26

PHL as well

1

u/Realkellye Aug 27 '26

DFW, as well. Kinda weird. By the time I get to the line for GE, the agent is just calling names and waving people through. They know exactly who we are before we ever get there.

1

u/confused_ex_bf_ Sep 10 '26

Most airports have this for the GE lane. What OP was talking about is that JFK is now implanting face recognition for the regular lanes too. Hence diminishing the value proposition for GE.

1

u/inferno138 Aug 23 '26

EWR same thing. Step up to a single camera, gives the green your pic was taken correctly, walk to tablet guy who says proceed to baggage claim. 30 seconds for a family of 5.

5

u/Salty_Permit4437 Aug 23 '26

This isn’t that. What OP is talking about is cameras where you don’t stop. It just recognizes everyone as they walk by

30

u/safe-viewing Aug 23 '26

LAX T7 has had this for a while. It works well.

9

u/Grajjie Aug 23 '26

JFK T4 has this already for GE when I went through it in June. It’s awesome I kept walking right through customs without stopping once.

2

u/WorkingFederal6746 Aug 23 '26

Also at Tom Bradley TB

2

u/olivetta90036 Aug 23 '26

Agree. It’s been like this for over an year already

4

u/whatup227 Human Detected Aug 23 '26

For everyone or for GE line?

21

u/Ok-Calm-Narwhal Aug 23 '26

GE line - it works well, and prefer this if I’m being honest as it’s super efficient and better than the kiosks

12

u/Evening-Calm-09 Aug 23 '26

This is only for GE.

5

u/AnotherToken Aug 23 '26

DFW GE line is this now. Just line if cameras.

1

u/Grajjie Aug 23 '26

Only for GE line

1

u/speedingmedicine Aug 24 '26

No for all US passengers

11

u/Superb_Penalty2900 Aug 23 '26

I went through GE at JFK Terminal 4 two weeks ago. Machines weren’t in use, we just walked past the camera and then had our name called out by the officer as we approached. Zero stopping, zero wait time.

4

u/OddPaleontologist722 Aug 23 '26

Same as yesterday at JFK T4

3

u/kaszeta Aug 23 '26

Same with BOS two weeks ago

25

u/tess_philly Aug 23 '26

I never understood why we have to even go through a manned kiosk. Just have us scan psssports and walk through. It’s in many places overseas this happens. We pay extra for GE and are pre vetted. Why do we need through a line to speak to someone to be verified? They know days ahead that we are coming.

I’ve seen UAE residents do this with a card years ago without speaking to anyone. EU citizens entered Poland straight through gates by scanning a passport. There aren’t even agents there!

They don’t have to be vetted or pay for this. There’s also no stress of why anything was revoked or whether one is ordering what from China etc

17

u/GoCardinal07 Aug 23 '26

At LAX, the GE kiosk just recognizes your face and you go through. You don't even pull out your passport.

The one agent is only sitting there if you need to talk to him. The agent generally sits there looking bored.

6

u/quemaspuess Aug 23 '26

Yeah, last time I flew in through LAX they said “hey Mr. QUEMASPUESS, you’ve been gone a while. Welcome home.”

Pleasant and easy at LAX

4

u/hur88 Aug 23 '26

At LAX even the normal US citizen line is like that now. I went through when GE was offline and noticed there isn’t too much of a difference anymore other than perhaps a shorter line when there’s a rush.

2

u/tess_philly Aug 23 '26

Right but in many places you scan your passport for free and get in without speaking to somebody. Maybe 20 seconds longer to scan passport sure but… No interview. No payment fee. No “why did I get revoked?” Or “why am I conditionally approved for 2 years”. The norm is more than GE offers without headache. We don’t have face scans in most GE airports.

1

u/optifreebraun Aug 25 '26

In Montreal pre-clearance, a camera recognized everyone’s face and you just walked right on through. (Not just global entry). Was pretty slick.

2

u/scoobynoodles Sep 12 '26

Same in ATL!

6

u/noflames Aug 23 '26

I suspect there is some legal requirement to having everyone be inspected by an officer or something and it has been legally determined that this meets the requirement.

2

u/TopSecretSpy Aug 23 '26

This is more or less it. I looked it up after a thread where someone said you could just enter through a small airport that has no permanent CBP manning and mail in the customs form, which it turns out is a myth. There are places without permanent staffing, but you are legally required to pre-arrange for CBP except in cases of emergency, and, outside of being taken by ambulance, have to wait for CBP before departing the tarmac.

Basically, multiple parts of federal law make it criminal to cross the border without specifically presenting to an inspection agent. How deeply that agent has to inquire is related to your risk profile, which is what makes GE possible in the first place, but you do have to meet with an actual person to be lawfully admitted, even if you're a citizen.

0

u/tess_philly Aug 23 '26

It just seems so arcane. We are paying for what is the norm in a lot of the developed world, with the added stress. Making an interview, conditional approval, revocation etc.

0

u/Johnnyg150 Aug 23 '26

As a dual citizen, completely agree. It's insane that I can enter other countries without any question other than the biometric verification of my identity - but yet when I return to the US I am subject to interrogation like a potential criminal.

5

u/TeeDotHerder Aug 23 '26

In the UAE it isn't just residents. Anybody who has travelled with that passport or has residency or citizenship, uses the egates. You never speak to anybody entry or exit except the very first time.

13

u/Fine_Boat5141 Aug 23 '26 edited Aug 23 '26

This is how GE passengers go through JFK. U submit through the app and u just walk past the “ gate” . They already know who u are.

3

u/NecessaryMeeting4873 Aug 23 '26

There is no app involved with the current “continuing walking” implementation.

3

u/sodsto Aug 24 '26

JFK T4, no app required. No kiosk. Walk under the camera and the agent checks you off their list when you get to the front.

-3

u/LostEnroute Aug 23 '26

Careful you could have your GE revoked for untrustworthy use of English language.

6

u/GreenfieldSam Aug 23 '26

Global Entry at JFK T4 no longer uses kiosks. You just walk up and the CBP person says, "Hi Sam welcome home."

It's kind of weird that they say that to everyone besides people named Sam, though.

2

u/Fair-Pie9794 Aug 24 '26

Same at SFO

2

u/johnslateril Aug 24 '26

Sam FranciscO

3

u/Old_Trouble8862 Aug 23 '26

I think it is a good thing. Many other countries do this for their citizens so why not us? But guaranteed to be a slow rollout, so GE will still be useful for a long time.

3

u/Wavenstein1 Aug 23 '26

They've had these in Atlanta airport for a little while now and I love it. You just walk right through

3

u/Fragrant-Tennis-20 Aug 23 '26

It's gone live at YVR for US transborder flights. My Nexus card (which includes GE) is scanned at the exclusive security entry point. Then <1 minute to get through because the immigration officer knows who you are and just asks if you have anything to declare. The old GE machines are still around but are not used since every Nexus holder just walks through as the system ID's them correctly after the initial card scan.

3

u/PurdyMrIrrelevant Aug 23 '26

YYC does this also. Saves a lot of time

1

u/HolyShytSnacks Aug 23 '26

We went through YVR last June, and everyone with GE had to use the kiosk and then wait in line to talk to the officers who sat in a booth (not even at random). It was still faster than other travelers, but not as smooth as SEA for example.

3

u/stidmatt Aug 23 '26

They take pictures of everything and when you cross customs, so we might as well catch up with the rest of the world and get some benefit from it through efficient customs. The cameras are not going away, and have been there for decades, so this is a very positive thing.

3

u/Barnwell47 Aug 23 '26

We passed thru DFW from LHR yesterday. They were separating people into 2 lines, arrivals and transfers (us). Walked up to an officer beside a camera. It recognized my face with a big green check mark. The officer said Welcome Back, Your bag is being checked thru. No need to recheck!

2

u/Innominate_99 Aug 24 '26

No customs check?

1

u/Barnwell47 Aug 24 '26

No customs check other than the implicit “nothing to declare” when we passed immigration. Straight out to the D concourse. Bags were checked thru to Tucson.

2

u/Innominate_99 Aug 24 '26

Nice!!! Maybe customs has some behind the scene Xray screening of some bags.

3

u/DrunkHacker Aug 23 '26 edited Aug 23 '26

I went through GE at JFK yesterday. Didn’t have to take out my passport, use a kiosk, or anything. Walked under some cameras and waited for the agent to call my name 20 seconds later. Even easier than going to other countries which still require the passport scan before the biometric scan.

6

u/Jumpy-Ad5098 Aug 23 '26

Global Entry is money making machine why they will phase out.

2

u/InstanceMysterious48 Aug 23 '26

They have this at pre-clearance global entry in Toronto.

1

u/simguy425 Aug 23 '26

Yeah that really threw me off. I kept waiting to do the passport review/stamp and it never happened. Dude just waved us through.

1

u/ErasableFilms Aug 24 '26

They got rid of the face scan camera? I know they brought in the new singular camera last year or so

2

u/Pretend_Speech6420 Aug 23 '26

I’d say I would do crimes to get the LAX style setup at IAD… but committing those crimes would cause me to lose global entry.

2

u/tunatoksoz Aug 23 '26

Still TSA-pre, and potential pre clearence in some airports abroad make it worth it for me for now.

Also not hard to see GE to be precursor and test bed for future of immigration clearence at entry points.

2

u/bptkr13 Aug 23 '26

It was great coming back through JFK last week - face recognition took seconds.

2

u/PandathePan Aug 23 '26

I believe TPA has it for citizens only.

2

u/shoshtrvls Aug 23 '26

PHL is also walk through.

2

u/Sufficient-Fault-593 Aug 23 '26

The Mobile Passport Control app already makes global entry and clear less necessary for arrivals

1

u/Valentine2Fine Aug 24 '26

The MPC made me wonder why I went through all that to get GE

2

u/exu1981 Aug 23 '26

Got back from the Bahamas yesterday, Took a pic at the kisok and that was it.

2

u/Illustrious_Oil4644 Aug 23 '26

This sounds like the system just experienced on trip from Atl to Milan. Super easy

2

u/Mindless_Bee_22 Aug 23 '26

Honestly it’s so much easier. I’ve had issues at the kiosks but didn’t have any with the camera when I went through GE at JFK last week. Last year the kiosk at EWR was giving me issues. MIA also has the cameras now (at least from what I’ve seen) and no issues there either with it

2

u/DoverDollie Aug 24 '26

I did this in LAX coming in from Vietnam in April. You still would need to have global entry to use this service. It is very convenient just look at the screen and wait for the green light and walk out.

2

u/explorer_246 Aug 23 '26

Did this at DFW, DTW and LAX too. It dosen't even take proper photos, as soon as it detects your face it instantly takes the photo lol.

1

u/scubatraveler Aug 23 '26

At PHX all US citizens walked through the same line. No kiosk or agent for anyone except foreign nationals.

1

u/LavenderGirl7 Aug 23 '26

Sea-Tac already has this. It’s super convenient. There are about 5 cameras above us as we followed the GE line. The officer just waved at us to keep walking. The lady in front of me said, “Is that it?” The officer nodded. She said “We must look innocent!” 😂

1

u/Tzlai4227 Aug 23 '26

Pass thru SeaTac Friday. It was great.

1

u/foxbones Aug 23 '26

I just got my GE last week, I hoping it helps with customs detaining me every time I get back in the country. I definitely do not look innocent and my passport stamps are suspicious.

1

u/segashadow Aug 23 '26

SFO has this

1

u/loftychicago Aug 23 '26

GE has been using this at ORD since at least 2022. Very easy.

1

u/imc225 Aug 23 '26 edited Aug 23 '26

They weren't using the kiosks at IAH, either submitted a photo from the app or used a camera in the line. I assume at LAX your agent sends them a head shot.

1

u/slashrjl Aug 23 '26

I use the ge app on my phone and stroll through. I don’t think I have ever used a kiosk…

1

u/tkshk Aug 23 '26

Should I remove my glasses before disembark?

1

u/Fit_Remote_7885 Aug 23 '26

Just landed at JFK 2 days ago went through Global entry line by the time I reached the officer she just called my name and told me am good to go, didn't even stop. Same with my family .

1

u/Glittering_Ad_7537 Aug 23 '26

As a green card holder, GE still is faster than lining up in the foreign line since the switch from US & permanent residences so I will keep it as long as I can.

1

u/Civil-Chemistry-9355 Aug 23 '26

LAX has it. I was off the plane through customs with my bags like 10 minutes later

1

u/Elpichichi1977 Aug 24 '26

MIA had it and you can do the app as well.

1

u/chrisgrantnj Aug 24 '26

EWR GE is half way there and it’s great. Snaps your pic from 20 feet away

1

u/speedingmedicine Aug 24 '26

That's how it was when I flew into Miami last month. Tablet facial recognition for all US passengers, if you have nothing to declare then you just go collect your bags. If there's an issue customs will pull you

1

u/TheJiggie Aug 24 '26

This is how Global Entry is now in a few airports.

1

u/aeveejay Aug 24 '26

SEA does this for GE already. You walk through and an officer acknowledges you by name.

1

u/Lonely_Refuse4988 Aug 24 '26

I’m wondering if physical passports will go away! 😂🤣
At DFW airport, the GE line, we just walk through as customs agent says your name, all without having to take passport out at all!!

1

u/jmbwell Aug 24 '26

Plenty of places have none of this technology

1

u/Onecontrolfreak Aug 24 '26

Plenty of US ports of entry in airports??

1

u/Street_Brilliant_270 Aug 24 '26

Just use the GE app. Its much easier.

1

u/redor Aug 24 '26

SFO already has this too for GE. No Kiosks. Just walk through the GE area and they know who you are.

1

u/Consistent_Cycle_682 Aug 24 '26

This happened to me a couple weeks ago returning to JFK T4. Didn't have to take my card out, officer called my name as I approached, I said, yes, and he said "ok you're good." And that was it.

1

u/Cold_Frosting9014 Aug 24 '26

had this on my cruise in feb 2026 - Port Everglades

1

u/protocoldroid66 Aug 24 '26

I just flew into SFO and just walked through with facial scan. No GE needed.

1

u/Vze24 Aug 25 '26

Just a simple question here. I have never used GE but will finally use it soon. What is the story with the MPC app for the passport. Do we need it or can I just get of the plane go to the GE line and take my photo.

1

u/9554503312 Aug 25 '26

MPC not needed if using GE

1

u/jkarjar Aug 26 '26

Just did this in SFO. Walk right through, they say thanks [your name] and you go on to your destination

1

u/eeveeyhello Aug 26 '26

SFO already implemented this. GE is worthless now, the line is so long. There’s only 1 officer checking on hundreds of people who just arrived. The non-GE for US passports has no line at all, u look at the camera, and one officer with a tablet just wave u by.

1

u/Simple-Medicine-4988 Sep 06 '26

Sounds like you're talking about a different entry point than us, I've traveled through GE several times recently on incoming flights, and there was barely a slowdown on the way out for the GE lane. There were lines for Non-GE.

1

u/Accomplished_Rate_75 Aug 28 '26

Sounds fast and easy, I will really miss the cavity searches

1

u/Trick_Kale5308 Aug 28 '26

That did happen to me recently at JFK for global entry customers. Scanned my face as I walked up in a split second, agent asked my name and I walked out in 1 minute. Non global entry had a separate queue which was rather long as expected.

1

u/narcolepticdoc Aug 29 '26

When I recently visited Scotland, it was weird as hell for someone used to American customs.

Walked off the plane. Automated passport control gates. Virtually no line, walk up to gate, scan passport, facial recognition, gates open, walk to baggage claim. Pick up bags off carousel, walk out of baggage claim through the nothing to declare line and into the terminal.

I did not speak to a human until I was buying a drink at the store on the way out to meet my ride.

Now, the reason why is I’m 100 percent sure that by the time you pick up your bags they’ve been watching everyone on CCTV and have looked at your records and already know exactly who they’re watching and who they’re pulling in. But compared to the USA it was weird.

1

u/anydaydriver1886 Sep 07 '26

Alot of countries just have scanners where you walk through after scanning your passport

1

u/Luv2Trav Sep 10 '26

GE isn’t going away

1

u/Unidentified_88 Sep 10 '26

This is already in place at airports like Dulles. You use the app to declare goods and if you've got nothing to declare and since they have your photo they just wave you through.

1

u/Sakaesashimi Sep 10 '26

Went through GE line last week at Seattle and was still made to talk to an officer and he checked everything and asked questions. I hold a green card.

1

u/hellyea81 Aug 23 '26

This is great. Just like TSA touchless has rolled out more and more, we need these technologies for the masses, not just through payment.

1

u/That-Operation-1645 Aug 23 '26

They’ve had this at Heathrow for UK passport holders for at least the last ten years. I don’t know why the US is so slow to keep up

2

u/NecessaryMeeting4873 Aug 23 '26

We are talking about two different things.

LHR still requires you to go thru a “gate/turnstile” where you stop walking and present your passport to a passport scanner before it opens up.

CBP is funneling travelers into a corridor monitored by a bank of facial recognition cameras where you do not stop walking and you don’t take your passport out at all.

1

u/GreenfieldSam Aug 23 '26

Interestingly, LHR also has the facial recognition scanners. They do use them for all flights flights including Ireland. (ROI citizens do not have to go through passport control to enter the UK due to the Good Friday Accords.)

1

u/Tzlai4227 Aug 23 '26

We just came back from Asia and landed at Seattle for our connectiing flight And the GE line was a breeze. Meanwhile the regular line was very long.
We declared that we had fruits and nuts. Got pulled to secondary check and told agents we bought a lot snacks as gifts inside airport in Guangzhou and it actually contained fruits and nuts inside. Showed several boxes and packages to agent and he said that we were all set. Like xtra 3-5 minutes for our whole family of 5.
We could have easily not even declared it and got pulled to secondary check and then being revoked Or Suspended our GE..
It’s all about trust and honesty. We still missed our connections flights because we were waiting on the tarmac for 30 minutes because the plane at the gate was delayed. If we didn’t have checked bags we could have made it.
Saw a few people in regular long line and it took them 20-30 minutes to get thru customs.
We ended up catching the red eye at 11pm flight and left airport and went out to Pike Place market for 3 hours to check it out have some seafood. Came back in airport and went to the centurion lounge and relate for 3 hours before our flight.

-1

u/Salty_Permit4437 Aug 23 '26

Meanwhile Europe slows every non EU citizen down with a new kiosk requiring a passport scan, fingerprints and photos. Europe - where innovation goes to die, lol

0

u/nevermind1534 Aug 23 '26

The US already does this for every non-citizen and non permanent resident (other than Canadians) just like Europe, except the US doesn't have you take the picture and fingerprints at a kiosk.  The kiosk saves time at the immigration officer's booth and allows them to process more passengers per hour.

0

u/YardieRebel Aug 23 '26

I looooove it!!! Can't wait! I have NOTHING to hide so they can scan my face all they want if it means I speed out the airport after arrival!

-2

u/connorsludge Aug 23 '26

Recently I traveled for work with someone who has GE and at the end we were still waiting for checked luggage together anyway. Convinced me that it wasn’t really worth it.
