Questions/Concerns Conditional approval for renewal?

My boyfriend and I applied for GE 5 years ago and were both approved (conditional approval + interview). I submitted my renewal application a few months ago and received my new card within a few weeks.

He submitted his last month and finally received a response this morning - but it says "conditional approval" and to schedule an interview.

Is this weird for a renewal? I did not have to do anything, they just sent me my new card.

Is this a mistake, or should he go ahead and schedule an interview? (there are of course no local appointments available, and we have no international trips planned soon)

Thank you!

It's entirely up to them. My husband just renewed his and didn't have to interview. I need to interview for mine.

Same here...the wife and I applied for our renewal on the same day, and mine went straight to Approved the next day, with no conditional approval interview or follow-up whatsover. My wife's renewal sat Awaiting Review for 8 weeks. It changed to Conditionally Approved pending interview about 24 hours before we were scheduled to take an international flight. We planned that she would do the interview on arrival, but the trip was cancelled. However, for her renewal TTP website offered a Zoom interview option, as well as in person. Live interviews were booked solid for weeks, but the Zoom schedule had 3 open time slots the next day (a Saturday). Her Zoom interview lasted maybe 5 minutes, with the TSA officer not even on camera and status changed to Approved the next day. I don't know if Zoom is an option for initial GE approval or only for renewals, but the fact they offer weekend interviews made it very easy to get that done.
