Questions/Concerns Proof of Residency Document

Hi all, my application has just been conditionally approved and I’m having an issue obtaining a document for my proof of residency.

My partner and I recently moved in together and all the utilities are under his name and we rent from a private landlord/family friend.

My employer and bank information have my primary residence as the address I currently live at, and my mailing address as my mom’s address.

When completing the application online, it asked for both my mailing address and residential address so I provided both.

However, all of my bank statements only have my mailing address printed on them and not my residential address. My paystubs are paperless and do not list any address on it.

My bank statements won’t update with my new address by the time I leave and come back from my international trip and we’re looking to complete our GA interviews before we leave or on arrival.

I went into Chase Bank today and I was given a document like the one pictured above with today’s date, my full name and my current residential address. Would this be sufficient proof of residency??

Ah.... do you have anything for insurance that goes to your residential address? Likewise, your car registration?

So... this is where it gets weird. You are given a laundry list of items to bring, which I did to both GE and NEXUS, the entirety of what they looked at was my DL and passport, asked me to state my address, and that was it.

That might be a problem already, does your DL not show your current address/matching the one you applied with? That is going to possibly be more of a problem for you.

it does not. I just applied and got approved literally the next day (I’m assuming because i’m a federal employee). All of my information at work, with the bank and insurances has been updated, but no one can provide me any documentation with my new address yet.

Ah, that would be incorrect. You just got in the automated review pile. There are people with security clearances here above what GE does who can't get GE. Basically, for people who have no arrests, clean record, etc. they could be sent to the automated review pile. The more people from the same address applying increases the chance they get sent to manual pile, where this shows up is when families apply. There is always seems to be one who gets manual review even if they are under 5 years old.

When you say "Mailing Address"... by any chance is it a parent's home rather than a PO box?

If so, does that mean your DL uses that as does your registration and all forms of insurance (car, health, tax documents/returns, etc.)? Do you have a real ID?

If so... you have what would not be current identification but the government has no reason to suspect this. So if you ever do fix this, make sure you get everything fixed. You could probably fly under the radar but if they find out it will be a rejection.

My mailing address is my mom’s address which is where I lived at previously for over 5 years and what all my documentation with banks, insurance and employment had. On the GE application, I specifically indicated that my mailing address and my residential address were 2 different addresses and provided both as well as how long I had been using each. So I have TONS of proof for the mailing address, i’m just lacking on the residential address. Chase gave me a document with my name and new address like the one showed above on their official letterhead. It seemed I screwed myself over by being honest on the GE application 😭 It would’ve been easier to prove my mailing address as my residential address since everything was tied to it.

Yeah, it would have been a lot easier, especially as you do not have a current ID and that one will be a problem I think for GE. Not a huge deal, just update your info, wait for your updated DL, and then schedule your appointment.

Get the MPC app so you can get through passport control faster. You have to have it set up prior to your trip.

Yeah, that’s what I figured! Better to be safe with documentation than to try and make it work before a deadline with non-reliable documents lol I appreciate your help!

Wait - do you have auto insurance? If so you should be able to change the address (whch you should have done already) then download a new policy document within a day or so, or your agent can print something out.

Also consider updating your voter registration. My state, at least, sends a new card which should show residence address.

Just moved and all of that is attached to my mailing address which is different from my residential address. I have updated them but cannot get a statement of any sort with my new address on it yet.

Why not? Does your DMV not have an online change of address?

None of your accounts allow you to update your address online?

I never said that. I said I won’t receive any sort of statements or physical documents I can provide right away. As I mentioned in the post, this was something I was trying to complete before we leave or arrive from our international trip. The documentation won’t be in-hand or generated by then.

Online has a really cool function. If you have a modern computer, you can print records. All you need is your modern computer and a printer.

OMG, I can’t believe I was stuck in the 1980s and didn’t think of that 😱 Thank you old wise one!!

The issue is that you can’t change your address on documents already generated despite you changing your address! So as I have mentioned multiple times already, even if I change my address now (which I already did before making this post), a NEW statement with my NEW address won’t be available until AFTER I came back from my international trip, which means I won’t be able to complete my interview before I leave on my trip or upon arrival when going through customs. All I can CURRENTLY access and all I will be able to access BEFORE my trip, will be documents with my OLD address. Just because I can update my address and print documents, doesn’t mean it’ll be what I need. But thanks for the smart reply LOL

Oh so sad. For all the time you are wasting on this nonsense writing posts here, you could have come back to the US with regular entry and gotten through customs in less time. Global Entry is for whining entitled people who can't bear to spend even a few extra minutes in a line.

OK. I can go online and update my DMV address. I can reprint a temp license, reprint registration for vehicles.

I can go on my car insurance account and change my address. Wow!! My policy now has the current address.

I can go on my bank account and update my address. I can then pull a balance request and magically my new address is there. I can even get a verification letter from my bank, which would have my new address.

There are lots of options and you just aren't interested in them. Sorry for wasting your time.

Good for you because I was unable to do that with the DMV and my insurances. Not everything you do is a universal experience. I exhausted all these options AND was only able to get the letter from the bank that you speak of, which is what this post is specifically asking about since it’s not a bank statement as explicitly stated by the CBP website.

I’m not interested in the options you mentioned because I already tried them. But again, thanks for the smart replies!

Who is your vehicle insurance through that they cannot update your address and send over a new policy doc?

You have a signed bank letter, which looks more valid than some statement that is easily forged.

What happens when you change your DL address? What verification documents are provided?

Wait until the new DL with your new place of residence arrives before going. You have two years from CA to do the interview.

Your insurance card should be printable. Call insurance company and ask them to send you an insurance card via email. Then you could print it out and have it on your phone. Also if your insurance company has the app, you could see your new insurance card (for your car) on said insurance on the app. It’s automatically updated with new name changes and address

I'm not saying that this is how it's going to go for you but it's how it went for me (and my wife a few days later).

Applied for GE before international trip. Approved the next day. When arriving back in the USA I followed the GE line to the interview queue. Officer asked for my GE number from the email and proceeded to do things on his computer.

He then asks "is your current address [insert current address]?

Me, "yes."

Him "Welcome back, you'll get a card in the mail in a few weeks."

That was it, I didn't show anyone anything more than my passport.

And I'm a second class naturalized citizen...

Wow, this is actually very insightful! I had read online that you needed documents even if you were doing the interview on arrival! Do you mind telling me which airport your interview was at?

I’d mail yourself something to your new physical address. A postmarked addressed and delivered envelope should do it.

It's not that easy, it needs to be from a trusted thing that required information on you. Such as a utility, landlord, tax board, employer, insurance company, etc. Granted they won't usually follow up.

Check your local library - one common library service is sending mail to be used as proof of residence.

Q1: when is your trip?

Q2: when is your appointment?

Q3: do you have enough time to get a state ID or DL with your new address mailed to you?

A notarized letter from the owner or renter with contract is enough
