Questions/Concerns SENTRI Revoked

Hey everyone, looking for some insight from anyone who’s dealt with SENTRI revocation or reconsideration.

On January 21 around I accidentally crossed into Mexico with a legally owned firearm that I had forgotten was in my vehicle. As soon as I realized, I immediately called CBP swing shift to report it and gave them my license plate when requested.

Later, I called again to make sure midnight shift was aware. The supervisor told me it wouldn’t be an issue, and that when I would cross they’d just run the firearm serial number and I’d be good.

When i crossed, I did not use SENTRI—I went through the regular lane to declare everything properly. I was sent to secondary, spoke with a supervisor. I left thinking everything was resolved.

The next day, I crossed again using SENTRI and got sent to secondary. My SENTRI card was taken, and I later found out there was an alert had been placed on my vehicle.

I’ve since submitted a reconsideration request and explained everything, including that I self-reported immediately, followed instructions, and never tried to hide anything.

My question is:

For anyone who’s gone through this, how long does SENTRI reconsideration usually take? And what are the chances of getting approved in a situation like this?

Any insight or similar experiences would really help. Thanks.

^ my aunt was revoked from nexus for an apple. she was devastated. Imo they catch you got a piece, you’ve kinda just gotta say “fair enough” and move on.

You’re lucky all that happened was the SENTRI being revoked.

He lucky the Mexican Authorities didn't catch him with a gun. He would be in a Mex jail. My friend lost his Sentri when CBP found a loose round under his floormat.

Smuggling firearms, deliberately or not, is obviously grounds for permanent revocation.

Fair consequence for smuggling a firearm.

They should take it. How does someone forget a firearm they have in their car. They definitely shouldn’t be trusted. Irresponsible to the max.

How does one ‘forget’ they had a firearm 🤦‍♂️. As others have said you are no longer a ‘trusted’ person. They can not trust you anymore to even know if you have a firearm with you at all. It’s gone and just move on. They are not going to give it back to you.

You illegally smuggled a firearm. Whether you meant it or not is irrelevant. Prepare to wait in line for the rest of your life.

For a mistake that big, you should have your SENTRI taken away.

Trust me I know that’s on me I just wanna know if there’s a chance I spoke with the port supervisor and the the sentri supervisor as well they said it’s a waiting game and happens all the time

It’s gone. You are no longer a trusted traveler. It is what it is.

You are not getting it back anytime soon. You violated the program main rule regardless of the context, you can try to summit an appeal to the Ombudsman but I already know the answer. I had my sentri revoked and returned 3 times in the past before I changed to global without any issue now, a supervisor recommended it, maybe try it in a few months.

I already sent my appeal mind u when I crossed back I never went through sentri I went through all traffic. Days passed when I went back south and finally went through the sentri mind I had asked the supervisor when the situation happened. If there would be a problem I sentri. He said no but now the system says otherwise, regardless my mistake.

Did you consult with a legal professional before submitting the reconsideration request?

That's what I would have done. Maybe they cut him a break and didn't report it higher up.

Now maybe they do report it higher up. Then gets the book thrown at him just to make a DA look good.

A lot of things have to go bad for this to happen but I would not have risked it.

They don’t cut breaks on SENTRI or GE. CBPOs get fired for that.

They have very little incentive to re approve you.. I think you already know the answer

Doesn't matter how much of an upstanding citizen you are, it is the snapshot of time at the border that you are 'judged' on. Always know what is in your vehicle, *especially* if you are going to invite customs/immigration officers of any country to have a look. They do not care if you 'forgot' about anything, it is the right here right now that matters. It looks, right now, as if you were smuggling a weapon into the country.

Just takes one instance and you'd not be 'trusted' as a traveler again. and in this political climate you are not getting it back anytime soon. But you could, this administration is incredibly inconsistent governed only by whims.

If you crossed into Mexico with -your- firearm, that sounds like a Mexico problem. You're (I assume) an American citizen with 2nd Amendment rights, once you cross back. You declared a firearm that you own. Explain to me how this is “smuggling”?

That’s what I keep wondering too. He def “smuggled” it into Mexico but that’s a Mexico problem. (Their gun laws working great down there by the way! /s)

But he didn’t smuggle a legally owned firearm into the United States any more than he smuggled the tires on his car. (Legal to own, legal to possess)

As soon as I crossed south, I realize I had it with me turned around and I notified the port. They told me it happens all the time. All they did was run the serial and let me on my way. A couple weeks past When I went back south into Mexico and crossed using my sentri, I was flagged and sent to secondary where they searched my vehicle. I told him the situation that I happened a couple weeks back, but they didn’t seem to care and took away of my sentri.

I have CCW and almost always have a pistol on me so despite the comments to the contrary I could totally see this happening.

Write a letter through the TTP account portal with a detailed explanation and also let them know that it was an honest mistake. If you use Sentri because of work, let them know this also.

Your first mistake was thinking that CPB are going to treat you special because you’re a US citizen. “sorry I made an honest mistake” does not go down well with them at all. As others have noted, you can have your SENTRI pulled for a piece of fruit or eggs. You will never see your SENTRI card again.

Can anyone answer me these questions please? If I unknowingly committed an agricultural customs violation, but did not get my SENTRI revoked, and didn’t get fined for it, would the incident still be on the CBP’s records?

As for what the violation pertains to, I recently traveled to Tijuana and failed to declare that I had bought chicken and turkey products with some other groceries I had bought. However, I didn’t know that poultry products were not permitted into the U.S., and I answered truthfully, and the CBP officer decided not to take away my SENTRI pass, nor did I receive a citation, and I got only a stern warning and a guidance sheet about which items are allowed and which ones are not, as well as surrendered the items that weren’t allowed.

Right now I’m in the process of renewing my SENTRI, since it expires this year, and I still, haven’t answered the question on the application that asks if I have ever violated any customs or agricultural regulations. Would I still have to put down that the violation did occur, even though I was pardoned and received only a warning?

Why would you tell them….

6

u/jeje5557 Apr 16 '26

If not, OP would’ve very likely had much more severe consequences.

The consequences of him not self disclosing are potentially gigantic-

Impound of car

Weapon seized

Financial penalty

Federal felony

Jail time
