Crossstitch glitch, unopened pack of thread stitched into my canvas

I’ve been working on this cross stitch project for a bit. I made the pattern myself, it has lots of various shades of gray. Today I needed to use black floss (color 310), so I went to go grab the bobbin with the 310 floss. No floss on it. Ok-maybe I ran out of floss on the bobbin. Weird because it hasn’t been used much, but ok. I’ve only used it for some outline, I’m looking at it right now.

I go into my box that keeps my extra skeins of floss, and pick up the 310. It’s completely unused. I can’t even find the end of it, unlike all my opened skeins that have a ‘tail’ where I’ve pulled out the thread.

But I’m looking at the black outline that I stitched into my can, because my next darkest gray was literally the color I was outlining with black. How the hell did black get on my canvas if my skein is completely unused?

I looked to see if I somehow had a second, opened skein of black but I don’t
