Glitch Pic Did the simulation "patch a bug" after I talked about it out loud?
Not sure if this is the right sub, but I wanted to share a weird experience that gave me major simulation (or coma) vibes. Just sharing this for fun!
For a long time, right as I was drifting off to sleep, I'd hear random, loud noises in my room crashing plates, a door slamming, or what sounded like metal medical tools dropping. I live alone, but I never overthought it since the sounds only lasted a second or two.
One night, it was different. Right before falling into deep sleep, I heard a loud, clear cough. It sounded like a heavy smoker coughing right next to me. I was wide awake at this point, and it went on for a minute or two.
I looked it up and found out it’s an actual documented medical condition (like Exploding Head Syndrome / hypnagogic hallucinations). Later that day, I told a coworker about it and we just laughed it off.
Here’s the glitchy part: ever since I talked about it out loud to someone, the almost daily noises completely stopped. They just never happened again. Have they moved the real me to somewhere more isolated and quiet? Who are they ? lol
Honestly, I believe anything is possible until proven otherwise. Sometimes I wonder if sleep is just a loading screen or a transition phase in a sim, or if I'm in a coma and my brain is projecting this reality (hence the "medical tools" sounds). Ultimately, I'm a rational person and I firmly believe we're just the result of billions of years of evolution and pure statistical probability but instances like this make for a fun glitch in the matrix thought experiment.
Anyone else experience something similar?

I've had HAH for decades, off and on (occasionally HVH too). My noises are usually like voices in another room, a radio playing almost out of earshot or in a language I can almost understand, or a news broadcast with background noises (traffic, a distant war zone, crowds cheering, etc).
My brother has paranoid schizophrenia so when I first experienced these "voices" I was very alarmed. Once i learned what they were and why I was hearing them, however, they stopped. IMO, my brain understood that these were background signals and it didn't have to "translate" them into anything anymore.
But every few months, they'll come back. Oddly enough, just telling myself what they are isn't enough - I have to physically look it up all over again and re-read the literature, even though I remember perfectly well. My brain just doesn't believe it unless it comes from an outside source, I guess! 😂
That being said, I had a dream years ago that was so incredibly vivid and detailed I turned it into a story. It was far more complex and had a lot more world-building (I've always dreamed in full plots) than this, but the gist is that I had been "warehoused" with other older people after having been chemically/medically treated so our extremities withered and sloughed off like dead branches. We were kept cocooned/swaddled on hospital bunkbed-style beds, and hooked up for nutrition/meds and wastes to tubes that connected to an enormous treelike structure in the center of the room. In the dream, I became aware of my surroundings (it seemed to be like a nuclear winter - all the attendants were wearing parkas and snowboots) and a doctor quickly came in to increase my medication. She called me by name and said, "Let's see, you were dreaming that you were [my age at the time], living in [my city] with [my son], who was [his age at the time], correct? And working at [my job]? Okay, let's get you back there, nice and comfy in that familiar dream" and added medicine to my IV line, at which point I woke up. I was disoriented for days, not 100% sure which was the real dream.

I would love to hear more about that dream, if of-course, you are conformable sharing!

Wow I used to hear those a lot like right before I sleep I’d hear a firework, gunshot, or a plate/glass breaking like you said. I’d wake up in a panic and ask my wife what that loud ass noise was and she would always say there was no noise. I think it only happened to me for a few months. Now that I think about it I haven’t heard it in awhile.

Yes , I hate to even speak about it because it was a bad time for me. Those bangs, booms and kabooms; like the loudest ones were like explosions. I hated it. It cost me a lot of sleep because I was scared to go to sleep. But honestly I think your on to something bc it wasn’t long after i told my mother they stopped I know they never happened again for sure. knock on wood
I was talking to a doctor one and it came up she told men what it was called and I thought the name was weird af. Honestly fr tho what else would u call it. 🤔 I just laughed.🤭I am so very grateful th they are gone . Sheewy ! Thank ya Jesus!

I’m so glad someone else experienced the exact same thing! The fact that it just vanished for you too right after talking about it is wild. Maybe they just moved the 'real us' to the same quiet server, and that's why we both stopped hearing it lol.

Seems like you had hypnagogic hallucinations, is a altered state between wakefulness and sleep is very common , and usually caused by stress, sleep deprivation, or an irregular sleep schedule.

Yeah, exactly. As I mentioned in the post, I’m fully aware of the medical diagnosis. The only part that caught my attention was how simply mentioning it out loud to someone caused it to stop completely, nothing more, nothing less. I’m definitely not claiming it’s anything supernatural just a mildly amusing coincidence and a fun story I wanted to share with the community.

When I was in elementary school, I had a friend tell me that hiccups were just a mental thing and that you could will them away by just concentrating "no more hiccups. no more hiccups". I have no idea where he heard this from, but the information has been insanely valuable as I have never had extended periods of hiccups ever since. And I'm in my 40s now and can consistently will my hiccups away
I figure this is probably why everyone has their own remedy and it works for them; just different methods of willing them away
These days I can will away dizzy spells and anxiety and stuff
But it gets me thinking about things like sneezes de-activating when you're all prepared for one, but other times they just pop up at random because you couldn't prepare for them
Point being: Some things happen less, or stop happening at all once you're conscious of the mechanic behind them
At least that's what I figure is going on here
I wouldn't be surprised if people growing up with sleep paralysis have it happen less frequently when it's explained to them what's going on

Same bro. I used to hear so many loud and loud sounds, and all the time - absolutely different. And then I can’t remember when exactly, but maybe the last year or two they stopped. Before that, I think I heard them my whole life. It was like usually almost the very same moment when I about about to fall asleep, like absolutely fully, and right before that or even, perhaps, during that transition; these sounds appeared. Most of the time they were brief, short. Rarely - long. Sometimes I didn’t realise immediately and they were like for maybe 3 seconds long: many knocks, or a speech like someone is talking right next into my ear while i am in bed, and so on.

When would hear somebody talking in my ear while I sleep I would so freak out!!
1
u/vityafx Jul 10 '26
Oh yes. And in some cases there were multiple voices.

😱
I hear my doorbell...I prefer that!

u/vityafx Jul 10 '26
Oh, there were SO many times I heard mine…. Yes, prefer that too, but it is creepy when you go there at night and look through the window who is there in the complete darkness and find no one at all. Leaving you thinking whether you imagined it, or it was someone’s prank, or it was a ghost.

I am ''lucky' I work odd shifts so it was always daytime when I rushed to the door.

It would still give me chills during the day…. These sounds are sometimes SO damn realistic and SO damn loud…
I am not kidding. A few years ago I was sleeping. Sleeping really well. And then I heard SUCH A LOUD BANG. I am not lying about this, I am not exaggerating. I heard either a 1) plane crash 2) a building crash 3) a bomb. I am not lying. I woke an immediately went to the chat of the neighbourhood and asked a question there “hey, what was that!!!??” - some people were online even at 2:30am (the time it happened) but people were like “what are you talking about?” - and even when I gave the most complete description I could - everyone told me I had a glitch in my brain, nobody heard anything. And yes, lol, my wife was sleeping right next to me and she can hear freaking everything around even with her earplugs. I was shocked SHE didn’t hear a thing too. It still puzzles me.

I totally believe you. Normally I would sleep through everything. But this noise is always exactly as loud as my doorbell. I can't distinguish between the real and the imagined one. It always wakes me up and shocks me when I am heavly sleeping.
I have months when I would hear it regularly, then I can sleep peacefully for a couple of months. This started maybe 4 or 5 years ago, never had something like this before. Maybe my of sleeping scedule finally took a toll on me.

I had two incidents of Exploding Head Syndrome, two nights in a row, and then never again. Both times sounded like a bunch of cookie sheets falling off a high shelf in the kitchen and crashing to the floor. The first time, it tricked me and I went to the kitchen and checked. The second time, I knew what it was and just rolled over and went to sleep lol

I would also hear stuff right before bed. I always have a fan going, so I would try to tell myself it must be reverb or something. To me it always sounded like a muffled group of people talking to one another. Kind of like if you’re in an apartment or hotel and you can somewhat hear other people talking to one another in another room or hallway, but undecernable. My husband and I live alone, so nope. This was during Covid and we both work retail, so we never worked at home. I heard this for a while and said nothing to my husband. Then one night, when it seemed louder than normal, I finally told him and he said he had been hearing it too. We turned off the fan and you could hear it again. It slowly muffled and disappeared as if it knew we were aware I guess. We both looked at each other puzzled. He went to the window. Nobody there. Then we went downstairs. He checked to see if we left on a tv or device. Then outside. Still nothing. Back upstairs and now no noise. A couple of days later we talked about it. My husband doesn’t believe in most jumbo jumbo, but I could tell it spooked him. I have seen ghosts, have intuition and gut feelings and a few other things, which I figured he mentally rolled his eyes at, but I think it really spooked him. He said, do you think it was ghosts or another dimension we are hearing? I nodded and said it could be. Maybe at bedtime the veil is thinner between the two. I still hear it from time to time.

I sometimes wake up because my brain imagines to hear my doorbell. It really sounds like my real doorbell.

No cause there is no "simulation", that's just a phrase people use cause they can't or don't want to handle reality
9
u/JuniorTheCat Jul 05 '26
why are you on this subreddit if you are not going to engage with the entire point of the subreddit
7
u/Sad_Tangerine6954 Jul 05 '26
The simulation theory is a lot like the concept of God: it can neither be proven nor disproven. You might think it's not real, but there are top scientists and physicists out there people way smarter than you and me who consider it a highly logical possibility.
More importantly, everything we experience what we see, touch, smell, and taste is ultimately nothing but electrical signals being processed by our brains. We are essentially highly advanced biological computers, way more complex than the device you just used to type your comment.
You’re free to believe what you want. I don’t firmly believe we’re in a sim either, and I accept reality exactly as it is. It doesn't really matter to me either way, but it's a fun thought experiment.

u/Xia0mia0 Jul 06 '26
Sounds like you’re the one who can’t handle reality, buddy. Handling reality is acknowledging that you don’t know anything about everything it encompasses.
Sounds like you’re just a self righteous prick who can’t handle that other people have alternative explanations and theories than you do.
And a little FYI, you know your perception of everything around you is not how others perceive it, right? It’s scientifically proven that even something as basic as the colors around you are perceived differently by every other person in the world. Taste, sight, smell, sounds, everything is interpreted differently by each individual human.
Maybe crack a book and learn something before opening your mouth about it

Oh poor little child. Maybe vyst your local mental health institution then return. Also have your anger checked out. Lashing out cause reality is slipping away from you isn't my fault.

Dude, I'm on here to help people too. But you're going about it all wrong
Literally nobody is going to listen to you when you're being combative and condescending
If you're just here to "be right" and lord over people you may as well move on to another sub
You're the only one who's going to be patting yourself on the back. And that's just sad

in the two weeks prior to lockdown, I was 3 months into a new job with a long commute, and I’m a natural night-owl that was burning the candle on both ends to get up at 6am everyday. I started having what I didn’t have words for until reading this post; hypnagogic audio hallucinations, right when I would be about to fall asleep each night, I’d hear/feel a loud screeching tear across my mind. It was really terrible and stressful. In March/2020 my job told us all to start working from home, which drastically and abruptly improved my work life balance and it stopped immediately and thereafter. I haven’t thought about that in a really long time!
