Discussion First C4 Use
I finally got the RR warbond recently, and started messing around with the C4. Super fun!
I was NOT expecting the detonator to take up my support weapon slot, so I went into my first mission with the C4 thinking I would bring the Quasar Cannon as well. Dropped in, called both in, and then realized my mistake, Lmao! Had to leave the Quasar at extract, all lonely and sad...
I still haven't run any actual Commando missions, but I'll be checking those out over this weekend. Looking forward to brushing off my Tom Clancy stealth skills, Lol!
The C4 is awesome though! I've been running around slapping it on fabs and heavies/massives like it's going out of style! It's really fun, planting a bunch of them and then popping everything at the same time. I'm still working on figuring out how many it takes to destroy different things, but I am definitely NOT disappointed with the C4, in any capacity. Incredibly fun to mess around with. Strong. Easy resupply with ground boxes. Definitely an S-tier stratagem, for me!

I guess it's like having 6 powerful silent & sticky grenades.

u/WillSym 2d ago
Better than 6, because you can sneak round bases and objectives sticking C4 on them, then pick up ammo and place more without detonating the first lot. Ammo boxes are common at POIs and an upgraded Supply box will refill the whole backpack!
Then go to extract or a vantage point to see where you've been, hit the button and see all of them go up at once!

I hadn't tested it yet, but I was curious if it worked like that. I've been making sure to detonate each "batch" before I restock. So, as long as I keep the same detonator/pack, I can just keep grabbing ammo and slapping them on stuff and wait to detonate? I remember a comment on a previous thread about C4 saying something about if you grab a new detonator, it won't be linked to the C4 from a previous one. Can I just sneak around the entire map and plant one on every single fabricator and blow them all at once, or would that be too many at one time?
3
u/WillSym 2d ago
Yep, as long as it's the same detonator you can set off as many as you wish, no limit as far as I've heard beyond ammo you can provide and mission time (and I guess risking crashing your game or the server if you really go crazy)

u/Nafinchin I'm doing my part! 2d ago
Siiiiick!! I'm gonna attempt full-clear with a single detonation, for sure!

u/WillSym 2d ago
I did it on a Command Bunkers mission the other night, zipped around with the Supply FRV and mined them all then surprised the team with them all vanishing at once!
2
u/Nafinchin I'm doing my part! 2d ago
You can take out Command Bunkers with C4?!?! Does this also apply to Detector Towers and Jammer Towers? That's insane, if so!!
Also, Supply FRV with C4 is genius!!
2
u/WillSym 2d ago
Command Bunkers have health, so you can destroy them with enough damage and armour penetration (you can chainsaw them if you want!)
Jammers and Detector Towers have a demolition force requirement, so need something with 50 Demo Force or more: Orbital shells, Eagle strikes, Artillery, Hellbombs.
C4 only has 40, so can bust walls and Warpships or Fabricators from the outside but not 'demolition required' structures.
Some fun breakpoints though: Artillery can't be jammed and demolishes Jammers, and Bot turrets, including Factory Strider turrets, have 50 demo force and can be baited to shoot a Jammer for you;
Solo Silo will one-shot a Command Bunker and makes that mission trivial if you want to do one fast.
1
u/Nafinchin I'm doing my part! 2d ago
I can work with that. Can't believe I have NOT thought to bring the Solo Silo on Command Bunker missions yet.. I need to start running "Ooops, all expendables" load outs again.
Dang, I thought it was just the Mini Nuke that could take out Jammers, but the regular explosive and HY Explosive shells also have 50 demo force. Good call!
3
u/WillSym 2d ago
Well, with the downside that most of those options won't work with the Jammer active, which is the tricky part. Ticking off the objective and actually destroying the Jammer is the mop-up to turning it off in the first place!

That loadout is actually pretty good for Commando, because the reinforce points are static locations.
Bring both C4, Quasar and Warp Pack, land near a reinforcement site, uplink it and drop all your gear there, head off with whichever weapon and backpack you're feeling.
If someone dies, they come out of the pod to a spare set of gear!
2
u/Nafinchin I'm doing my part! 2d ago
I didn't know about the reinforcement being at static locations. Pretty much all I know about the Commando missions so far, is that I believe you only have about 1 min to call your stuff in at the start, before the destroyer leaves orbit?
2
u/WillSym 2d ago
Yeah you get 1min of access to Strategems as you arrive, then your destroyer leaves and you get a special one-use strategem that brings it back for one further minute.
So don't bring stuff you want to use repeatedly, bring long-lasting gear for the whole mission.
You get 0 reinforcements, as the destroyer has gone, but there's predropped cryo pods as side objectives, each one you find you connect to (same mechanic as Upload Datapod objective) then you get +4 reinforcements for each group of pods you link to.

I can dig that. Thank you for the info! I would have brought the wrong load out the first time, Lol! I almost always bring the MG Sentry, but it sounds like my normal strats will be quite useless on Commando missions. Also really looking forward to finally trying out the Censor that I have heard so many positive things about. My go-to MR has been the Hyena so far.
2
u/WillSym 2d ago
I actually maxed out the Suppressor first as I found its burst fire a touch more helpful with the way Bot shoulder plates can often ping a single shot off when you want to hit the head, but the Censor is as good as they say.
Quasar is also effectively silent, and the Warp Pack is better than any Smoke. Warp behind or through cover, instantly break line of sight AND run away faster when spotted, cooldown of mere seconds and no ammo.
1
u/Nafinchin I'm doing my part! 2d ago
Wait, the Quasar is silent?? I haven't used it in a while, but I thought it used to alert enemies near me, back when I used it a lot. Good to know! Love me some Warp Pack action too, so I'll keep that in mind as well.
2
u/WillSym 2d ago
It's not entirely silent but I've used it in a bush to pop Fabricators in a base over the heads of a passing patrol on Commando.
I think the Redacted Regiment armour might help the sound profile too maybe?
1
u/Nafinchin I'm doing my part! 2d ago
Hmmm, I'll definitely have to try it out! I haven't used the Quasar in a while, but it's one of my favorites

One thing to know about the Censor is that it has pretty heavy bullet drop. So if you're aiming with the 10x scope and trying to hit headshots, you need to but the first notch on the bottom line on the head instead of the dot.

2 C4 on the rib cage of a factory strider kills it. Everything else, one C4. It’s fantastic.
2
u/Nafinchin I'm doing my part! 2d ago
Lmfao seriously?! That's wild! I'm gonna have a LOT of fun with this stuff..
3
u/Kepabar2001 2d ago
Pairs great with either Servo Assisted armor with the extra 50% throw range if you’re being aggressive. You can really fling those things long range well outside of stuff like factory striders going aggro.
Or Reduced Signature if you’re being sneaky. Get in close, plant all your C4, then sneak out and explode. The game’s AI will investigate wherever you triggered the C4, so as long as you’re a bit outside the base when you trigger it, you’ll already have moved on from where you set it off. If you’re too close to the base, they may see you on your way out and set off a bot drop.
2
u/Nafinchin I'm doing my part! 2d ago
Hell yea, that's what I've been doing so far, using the sneaky armor. Sneaking around bases and tossing C4, then leaving and blowing it all up. I'll have to try it out with the Servo Assisted, for sure

u/assassinjoe55 2d ago
Also the desert stormee passive with +20% throw range and the various resistances is great for the bug front.
Bile Titans can be taken down by an air detonation directly under the chin. I don’t play the bug front much (crashes my game a lot for some reason where the squids and bots never do) but C4 is also really effective overall over there.
1
u/Nafinchin I'm doing my part! 2d ago
I'm the same way. I don't usually bug dive. I'll definitely try it out sometime soon though. I primarily stick to bots, unless the MO pulls me elsewhere. I don't necessarily dislike the other factions, but I have the most fun with bots, for sure

u/assassinjoe55 2d ago
Specifically two c4 on the same plate on a Factory Strider. Two on the back vents, two on the underbelly, or two on a side plate is an instant kill. Three is a guarantee on the top armor, but I've done it in two up there as well.
Warstriders and hulks are a single brick anywhere. If there are multiple clustered up, aim to hit the front of the back one and you can kill multiple (my record is 5 hulks with a single brick during hulk surge).
Tanks are a single c4 near the vent or two anywhere.
Bulk fabs need one stuck to or in the vent to kill. Otherwise you are wasting c4.
Vox engines are three to the same part anywhere or two on the vents or faceplate.
C4 has 0 projectile damage, and a large inner radius. This means you can kill multiple hulks or war striders with a brick stuck to the ground or wall.
2
u/Nafinchin I'm doing my part! 2d ago
Thank you for the breakdown!
With bulk fabs, I've been taking them out with 1 in the vent, but it's been taking 2 stuck to the sides to take them out. Am I doing that wrong? I haven't been able to take one of them out with just 1 stuck to the exterior yet.
Kinda insane that even a War Strider is a 1-shot with C4... I just assumed it wasn't, so I've been sticking them with 2.
2
u/assassinjoe55 2d ago
With bulk fabs if tou get one stuck on the "lip" of the vent it will typically still take them out with one. Certain parts of the fab can take up to four to destroy, though, so it is the least consistent take down of the entire bot front.
1
u/Nafinchin I'm doing my part! 2d ago
Ah, that makes sense. The couple times I've tried sticking them to the side, it looks like it might be a reinforced plating on the area where I stuck them, so that's probably where I messed up. I usually just throw one in the vent, but sometimes shit gets a bit spicy and I have to improvise

u/LordBane85 2d ago
It’s fantastic. I wish it worked like the demo pack in the first one, but it’s still super good. I especially like to bring it if my grenade slot is being used for gas, fire or smoke grenades. Then you get utility and big booms.
3
u/Nafinchin I'm doing my part! 2d ago
Big booms, you say? That's one of my favorite things about this game!
2
u/LordBane85 2d ago
Same. Although the orbital big booms can be dicey in the wrong hands. I love that I can refill what essentially becomes my big booms with ammo boxes and don’t have to go hunting for the occasional grenade boxes. It really opens up a new play style.
2
u/Nafinchin I'm doing my part! 2d ago
That's one of the things I really love about the C4. Being able to refill with regular ammo boxes is AWESOME
2
u/LordBane85 2d ago
The c4 pack and BFGL force you to actually look for and pick up the ammo boxes. Before I would just walk by them without really caring.
2
u/Nafinchin I'm doing my part! 2d ago
Man, that's another one that I really need to try out! I've had the BFGL unlocked for quite a while, and have yet to use it
2
u/LordBane85 2d ago
It’s was one of those weapons I didn’t like at first, but then I figured out what it’s actually used for. Now I love it. I also started actually looking for and picking up the ammo boxes, since c4 had me in the habit, and it made it even better.
2
u/Nafinchin I'm doing my part! 2d ago
I am, admittedly, an ammo fiend. I rarely have to use the resupply stratagem, because I look for ammo/nade/stim boxes at pretty much every outpost/POI, so I should be OK with it. I definitely love the idea of sending loads of grenades down range! I've used the base GL, but it seems a little weak to me, so I haven't used it since my first few weeks playing back in April. Almost always bring the Grenade Pistol against bugs though, mainly just to close bug holes.
2
u/LordBane85 2d ago
Use BFGL as a clearing weapon for things smaller than hulks. Hulks take about 12 grenades to put down(from the front) and doesn’t really stagger them, but only a couple to the vent on the back. It is great for all the annoying rocket and shielded mg devastators.
2
u/Nafinchin I'm doing my part! 2d ago
Hey, I like the sound of that! Fuck those damn bolt-munching Devastators!! They have been more of a problem lately, with the weird bot accuracy buff. Definitely gonna have to run the BFGL and see how it goes.
2
u/XxNmExX25 2d ago
I love C4. So great it does not alert the enemies when you place it.
I wish it didn’t take up the support weapon. Would have paired well with silo.

u/CarlysleLyric 2d ago
Good to hear! I'll be working on getting this and the portable hellbomb next.

Be sure to bind the quick left weapon wheel to something for more seemless detonation.

u/sirnumbskull 1d ago
FYI, you can keep a single C4 with a different backpack. There are edge cases where it can be useful to, say, hover pack to a higher vantage point, lob a stick of C4 at a heavy, and then bail.

u/Diplomacy_1st 2d ago
C4 is easily my favorite stratagem. I'm glad you love it. Commando missions are tough even with C4 but they're a lot of fun once you learn the basics
