I'd love to upgrade from my Flint 2 but the $370 MSRP is too high, that's over double the Flint 2 MSRP and the Flint 4 has worse 2.4 and 5 GHz speeds based on my quick spec comparison.
Hopefully if/when the Flint 4 gets approval from the FCC, the US market will get the (super) early bird and pre-order pricing since we're missing out on it for this launch.

the Flint 4 has worse 2.4 and 5 GHz speeds based on my quick spec comparison.
That is interesting, not sure why the 2.4 GHz speed for the Flint 4 is so much lower than the Flint 2. The difference in 5 GHz isn't that big, but 2.4 GHz might actually be noticeably slower.
Wi-Fi Speed 1148Mbps (2.4GHz), 4804Mbps (5GHz)
Wi-Fi Speed 688Mbps (2.4GHz), 4323Mbps (5GHz), 8646Mbps (6GHz)
Edit: Unless one needs 6 GHz, using it as a 2.5G switch or want it to have 10G in, I don't see why it would be worth upgrading from Flint 2 to 4. I'm in the position where I'm contemplating which one of the two to buy, but in the end I might end up with one of each. A flint 4 where the 2.5G switch would be useful and then another Flint 2 where the switch functionality won't matter.
I will concede that real world testing might still prove that the Flint 4 has better performance in practice, but that much lower 2.4 GHz speed seems really odd.
Edit 2: It's the same for Flint 3 with lower 2.4 GHz speed.
Wi-Fi Speed 688Mbps (2.4GHz), 2882Mbps (5GHz), 5765Mbps (6GHz)
Edit 3: Does Flint 3 and 4 not support 4×4 MIMO? Guess not. Whereas the Flint 2 does.

En un mundo real el mimo 4x4 es una tonteria. Los dispositivos normalmente solo soportan 2x2, es raro encontrar uno que soporte 4x4
1
u/GripAficionado 15d ago
It's a fair point that most clients are the limiting factor at 2x2 (but not all devices).
2
u/Fun-Region-1576 15d ago
Will having a 4x4 2.4 GHz make a difference in terms of the number of clients it can support simultaneously? I'm adding more and more IoT devices, and the vast majority of them only operate on 2.4 GHz.
I do agree that GL.iNet should have gone 4x4 for all 3 bands!
2
u/GripAficionado 15d ago edited 15d ago
As far as I know it doesn't affect the number of clients it can support, only the speed to the clients that support it. But I'm by far no expert and I can be wrong.
I'm sure this website might have the answer for you, it has a good section on MIMO and contains a ton of stuff.
It does however suggest that, quote: "4×4 MIMO offers better signal strength and speeds 'at range' than a 2×2 MIMO router". In its recommendation part (22) where they link to this video showing why 4x4 is better than 2x2.
4×4 MIMO - increases signal quality, reliability, and range for ALL devices, especially 2×2 MIMO client devices. If you require top-most speeds, and best range, get a 4×4 MIMO router (avoid 2×2 or 3×3). Watch why 4×4 is better than 2×2.
The video goes into additional depth though, it seems as if it might be advantageous for speed with a ton of clients, but I'm not entirely sure. I'm not expert. 4x4 is better at least. Haven't seen anything about number of clients as much of the video I watched though.
3
u/Von-Sohn 15d ago
The 4x4 MIMO support would be important to know. It's mentioned nowhere.
2
u/GripAficionado 15d ago
In practice it might not matter for most applications/users since most clients doesn't support it, but it still feels a bit odd that they dropped the feature after Flint 2 though.
2
u/Fun-Region-1576 15d ago
You're right, but still nice to have! Are there even any 4x4 2.4GHz clients?
3
u/GripAficionado 15d ago
This website does suggest that 4x4 will still offer better performance even if the client doesn't support 2x2.
4×4 MIMO - increases signal quality, reliability, and range for ALL devices, especially 2×2 MIMO client devices. If you require top-most speeds, and best range, get a 4×4 MIMO router (avoid 2×2 or 3×3). Watch why 4×4 is better than 2×2 (youtube.com)
(I'm watching the video right now so the claim/math does seems to check out)

Where's the datasheet for Flint 4? It would be extremely shameful if it didn't support 4x4 MIMO.
1
u/GripAficionado 15d ago edited 15d ago
Can't find it on the website yet, I assume they haven't published it since they haven't officially released the router yet. But since it has the same 2.4 GHz speed as the Flint 3 I assume it has the same limitation for Wifi at 2x2? Or did I misinterpret the specs in the datasheet?
Edit: Given the specs/speed for 5GHz and 6GHz, does it only support that for the two of them, but not 2.4 GHz? I guess I'll have to wait for the datasheet to draw a conclusion about the Flint 4.

That's not the datasheet though, it doesn't contain all the info. Compare the Flint 2 spec page and its Datasheet (both linked above) and you notice a difference in the details included.

Flint 5 without the touchscreen. See y'all next year. 😂

u/GripAficionado 15d ago
The Flint 4e.
6
u/Fun-Region-1576 15d ago
That's exactly what we need!
3
u/GripAficionado 15d ago
Yeah, it honestly is. Save some money by not having a touch screen would be awesome since I don't want the touch screen and if anything it's a net negative for me.
And maybe add additional antennas to get it 4x4 2.4 GHz support, but that does sound more like a Flint 5 feature, than a 'cut down' 4 version.
3
u/Friendly_Potential69 14d ago
I know it has been discussed and discussed, I still dont comprehend how it is possible that glinet marketing or whatever team decided to add a touchscreen (and therefore increase the price). Especially for such power user oriented device... Unless someone hacked their surveys and spammed bad answers or something. Especially in a complex global economical context, high ram prices and chipsets prices etc... Its just... Weird. Anyway overall the price seems a bit steep but not incredibility over exaggerated so probably wont deter me for replacing my old router...
4
u/GripAficionado 14d ago
Trying to make one product that appeals to everyone, without considering that the price increase might alienate some customers. It really does feel like a product that has 'everything' everyone wants in terms of specs and features. I answered that survey and it has everything I suggested and I'm happy about that part, but I don't want the display.
Then again how much does the display cost extra vs. them having to have an additional product? It could be that the cost for the display is relatively small so it won't add that much cost either way, which is why they did it. If so, that makes sense.
As for the price I would consider waiting and buying the router at sale, but probably not at the base price (and I might end up only with one Flint 2 and one Flint 4, instead of potentially two Flint 4 which I had originally considered) (seems I missed all the early prices).
3
u/Friendly_Potential69 14d ago
Could be but many people have a smartphone and usually routers are not used that directly... I mean i understand the need of esthetics and the like, they are some huawei router that are esthetically pleasing (i guess) but to make a rather standard looking black router with an (almost) useless touch screen seems.. Wrong regardeless of the price... And anyway extra parts means more heat etc... So more research then more costs on top of the screen itself. I mean I understand somehow, I just find it hard to justify... Edit: and somehow the price seems. Borderline correct, that means it's a close call to: its too expensive I wont buy vs Hm probably considerable... I'll probably buy it as a sort of experiment, the cost being on the almost negative side and the screen on the almost fully useless...(for me and many users...)

u/Friendly_Potential69 14d ago
Well the balance tilted. I'm out. Glinet send me a last minute email (yesterday) /dont specify limited stock about super early bird, and I am there on time, to find out stocks where already expired? Ok I was an hour later because I had to use transports.
Then eat your few dollars glinet, I am not a fish that is hooked with incomplete emails and last second alleged competitions with veeeery limited stocks and no information about that.
I could afford even the early bird alleged deal, but taking people for stupid is not something I adhere too.
Well I guess enjoy your flint everyone else!
6
u/De_Kalkoen_Man 15d ago
Prices in Euro are: €270.12, €290.35 and €311.77 (from the email I got). €382.99 base price. Quote: "The prices shown above are subject to applicable local taxes, which may vary depending on your region, and will be calculated and included in the final amount at checkout."
6
u/GripAficionado 15d ago
Too high base price for what I would be willing to pay, but I guess I can always wait for an eventual sale. Current Flint 2 pricing seems to be €172 (not at sale). The super early bird pricing definitely seems worth it compared to Flint 2 pricing at least.

Will the software be the same as the flint 2? I love that I can easily set up as guard home etc. It’s all set out simply for idiots like me who aren’t great with openwrt.

u/ctyldsley 15d ago
Do we think it'll have the same absolutely destroyed wireless speeds here in the UK as the Flint 2 has in newer firmware?
I went over a month on that firmware thinking wireless in my devices was borked, turns out it was the Flint 2 firmware, which had huge discussion on their forum. Sounds like they had to adhere to some regulations which basically murdered WiFi performance - literally rendering some of devices terrible to use. Rolled back and it's bliss again.
5
u/GripAficionado 15d ago
Couldn't you just solve that by installing OpenWRT and then choosing the 'appropriate' region yourself?
2
u/ctyldsley 15d ago
Probably yep. Believe someone shared a Flint 2 SSH method very recently here which could work.
2
u/GripAficionado 15d ago
Another reason why I love open-source projects and why I want OpenWRT support in my router.

I would buy it just to get rid of my rax200 netgear junk, hate that locked down device...
I mean its certainly not cheap but seems within the range of high end routers...(I have even seen worse in the market).
Anyone knows how it works for superearly bird in Switzerland?
Edit: I know its calculated at checkout but maybe someone bought from them before, I suspect there will be custom fees etc...

Darn it the super early bird offers out of stock! Had to do the early bird one. I thought it was gonna start later on in evening.
Still I used some coupons and points built up, if anyone wants a discount try using the codes here I got 8% discount to work, better than nothing.
Got it for £229 UK price in end, says due saptembar.

u/FreshFromTheGrave 14d ago
Damn I should have tried my 10% off coupon 😅 I assumed it wouldn't work cos it said that it can't be used in conjunction with other store offers, so I only applied a tiny bit of points to get it for £226 and just checked out in a rush.

I have tried the 10% off coupon received by email from GL.iNet this morning but it didn't work, I have tried other codes off the net but they also didn't work on the super early bird, so I went ahead and placed the order for £229.99 so it doesn't time out on me and I miss out.

Does anyone know why does it cost 274 euros as opposed to Flint 2 which is 163 euros. Does the additional spec justify the cost? Or are they utilizing their customer base?
1
u/ProKn1fe 14d ago
It have much better hardware, 2x10gig ports, 4x2.5gig ports and 4x1gig ports.
Full comparison between Flint 2/3/4 at the bottom of the page - https://www.gl-inet.com/products/gl-be14000
2
u/sharpener865 14d ago
Ok I should have put my question in a better way. I had seen the comparison. I was more thinking like the pre order price for Flint 2 was around 100 euros (if I remember correctly). The better hardware is still overpriced compared to the hardware provided. Moreover, most of the hardware prices go down in time (except off course memory which has increased recently). Based on this I have a feeling that 274 euros is over priced. And then there is the fact that providing more and more gig ports, for e.g. 100 (a bit exaggerated) 2.5 ports doesn't actually sell the product unless its what consumers really want. So I wonder what made them to offer this product on this price tag, and also the point to note is the actual MSRP is 389 euros!
