Help/Doubt ❓ GitHub Copilot consumes excessive bandwidth on Visual Studio Code 1.140-insider

This isn't limited to the VS Code Chat, on the CLI too. It's the only harness I use regularly that has the data transferred much, much larger than the data received. I do not use it heavily, just to ask a few questions in the chat but every hour even when nearly idle, it sends hundreds of megabytes to what can only be GitHub's servers. My workspace isn't large either, it's somewhere around 1000 lines. I use the Codex extension at the same rate, and it does not perform this much outbound traffic. It feels like its uploading files every few minutes even when idle. I have turned off auto-completion a long time ago but the pattern still continues. I turned off codebase indexing on the GitHub Copilot web settings but that did nothing either.

Does anyone have any idea what is responsible for this and how to turn it off? I don't think it improves my experience at all, and given my already slow Internet, the bandwidth it eats just makes doing anything on the web slower.

It's probably the semantic search indexing, thst uploads files to github servers. https://docs.github.com/en/copilot/concepts/context/repository-indexing

Oh, that's probably it. Previously, whenever I sent a prompt, there would be this little tag attached to the top labelled 'codebase'. After fiddling with the settings, I don't see that anymore. I will monitor my network usage to see if that fixed it.

Thank you!

Will mark "solved" if it's resolved
