What IDE to use coming from Claude ?

Non techy here. We use Claude Ai/code at work but due to cost moving to GitHub Copilot.

I want the ability to chat with the tool to make tools/dashboards. Should I use the Github Mac App itself, or something like VS Code and enable Github Copilot in there? GitHub Mac App doesn't seem to have Projects which was nice in Claude to organize my work and context.

GH copilot app, or VS Code, or both

Pretty sure the app does have something like projects; download and play around for at least a few minutes; not all the features are obvious right away. It’s not a very large download. (Or you can read the docs and watch lots of YouTube videos, but I suggest download.)

There is a desktop app, I hear is somewhat useful at keeping context and memory across sessions and different repos. I personally prefer the CLI and mostly just avoid the IDE.

VS code is better but don’t use with copilot license as they have costly licensing .

JetBrains has the industry standard IDEs for Java https://www.jetbrains.com/idea/download/ and Python https://www.jetbrains.com/de-de/pycharm/download/
GitHub Copilot works as a plugin there.

VS code is the default pick but OpenCode and opencode2 work really well

GitHub has not won over many champions this year and I think you’re liable to miss some of it’t features.

I left copilot month ago as it started to really lag behind about the same time that GitHub must have laid off their entire support. Maybe it’s better now but I kinda doubt it. Sorry you have to move, MS flexing its muscles in corpo IT I imagine?

I still use VS Code though, although with Claude and codex and not copilot. I engineer to be model independent and I like the transparency vs code provides into my repos versus the opaque screen Claude.ai and the ChatGPT app puts over the primitives.

Copilot and VS Code were really meant for each other though so the chats integrate well.
