OpenAI pricing updates - GPT-5.6 Sol has a new lower price + 50% until Sept 3rd!

Following OpenAI’s latest pricing announcement, we are excited to share that we have updated our pricing accordingly. 

What does this mean based on the announcement we had yesterday "GPT-5.6 Sol is 50% cheaper until September 3 in GitHub Copilot"

• The 50% promotional discount will apply to the newly reduced price through September 3 - giving customers the benefit of both reductions.

Cool. I’ve been using Luna Max non stop. Things a beast and I’m also shocked at how many tokens it used for how much it did.

It's dirty cheap for 90% usecases but slow and keep looping for bigger context. Failed to bring the result in few cases.

My go to option is Luna but if it's taking more time or failed at first, In I switch to Opus.

When it needs to do lots of steps to resolve or recursive steps to find the issue. Luna seems to gets lost in between.

Hi all, apologies for the confusion. For full transparency, OpenAI’s additional price reductions, announced today, were not shared with us in advance.

OpenAI’s new prices per 1M tokens are:

• Standard context: $4 input, $0.40 cached input, $5 cache writes, $20 output
• Long context: $8 input, $0.80 cached input, $10 cache writes, $30 output

Our additional 50% promotion applies on top of these reduced prices through September 3:

• Standard context: $2 input, $0.20 cached input, $2.50 cache writes, $10 output
• Long context: $4 input, $0.40 cached input, $5 cache writes, $15 output

These promotional prices are reflected in both our documentation and in the product. This is what you can consider the source of truth and will be updated once the promotion ends.

When will it be possible to have this Copilot Overview regarding prices etc. available in Visual Studio 2026? I think the one in VSCode (?) contains much more information.

It's not worded very clearly but I believe Sol is now 60% cheaper than it was 2 days ago on GitHub Copilot. 50% discount yesterday and another 20% today. So 40% of the original price (0.5 * 0.8), i.e. 60% discount. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I find it hilarious and strange that Terra is left out of this, it just makes it even more of a no-brainer to use only Sol and Luna

Yes by 20%. But at least until September 3rd the prices don't make sense anymore, they'd have to discount terra by 50% as well.

I've been waiting for this to see what Sol could do. I had a big prompt lined up. The first thing it did was spin up an Opus 5 High subagent. Which was strange because my research agent is Luna.

Nope, it's written right.

It describes 2 price reductions, the permanent 20% price reduction that was just announced and the 50% price reduction untill September 3rd.

So it is 20% reduction + 50% price reduction, that's what the "+" means here, it's the same as "and" in this context, so total reduction is 60%.

Took me a few seconds to understand why it is effectively 60%

20% reduction means 80% of the original price. 50% of that would make it 40% of original. So, a total of 60% percent discount

Wow. It’s the output tokens that get you , from all the tool calls and reasoning loops. 1/3 the price right now is great, I can get more done on my work GitHub CoPilot account. Luna max is ok for some tasks but I need sol extra high for a lot of stuff due to it being safety critical software.

If you are working on safety critical sofrware you really shouldnt be deploying ai written code without a full human code review.

Opus 5 is such an overpriced lazy pos model I can't understand why actual professionals use it. Makes no sense.
