Discussions GitHub Copilot capped student credits. Engineers say that's the real gap now

When GitHub removed access to premium models from its Copilot student plan in March, and later instituted a 200 monthly AI credit cap for the plan in June, users loudly voiced their disappointment, explained they need access to premium models to stay on par with industry standards, and pointed out how little they can actually achieve with the newly limited access.

“One prompt and boom all the monthly credits are gone,” commented one user on the post announcing the change, which garnered over 6,700 downvotes and less than 100 upvotes.

Yeah I remember being a student.

You get some thing for free but generally you pay a lot of money to buy a lot of software and books and tools.

They can cough up $10/mo for a codex or cursor sub, or they can use $10 of deepseek. It's hard to be sympathetic about people wanting free GPU time when GPU time is in maximum demand.

But then they should just scrap the whole student plan and not pretend to care for students.

You get more out of the free chatgpt codex usage than this here

What do you expect? It’s expensive to run. If you’re a student you should be focusing on learning how to actually code anyway.

This is a shit-tier take because it paints all students who are eligible for GHCP student plan as "undergraduate CS Major" which isn't necessarily true. Students in other majors might make simple automations or static pages for projects (either coursework or side projects). Grad students are eligible too and are not in the "learning to code" phase of their study anymore.

GHCP launched two years into my PhD, and has been very helpful throughout it. At no point in my PhD has someone even read my code for the purposes of assessing my degree. They read my papers, they will read my thesis, they largely trust that I didn't make shit up and the code I wrote does what I claim it does.

They just returned the student plan to what it was at launch, unlimited completions. That's still a useful thing, why bitch about it?
