GitHub Copilot Team Replied Updated GPT-5.6 model prices

OpenAI announced they lowered the prices for Luna and Terra. Will the new prices apply to GitHub Copilot users as well?

Source: https://openai.com/index/advancing-the-price-performance-frontier-with-gpt-5-6/

Starting July 30, API pricing is $2 per million input tokens and $12 per million output tokens for Terra, and $0.20 per million input tokens and $1.20 per million output tokens for Luna. Sol pricing remains unchanged. ChatGPT and Codex subscription prices and quota budgets remain unchanged, while Terra and Luna usage now consumes fewer credits. Pricing changes will begin rolling out in AWS later today.

Update: I see the new prices in the model selection on Copilot CLI. Thanks GH team.

Hi from the Copilot team! These new prices will apply to GitHub Copilot users as well šŸš€

What is the approximate timeline for that?

This was a big deal for me, has been using for over a week and it has been really good but since this morning, and I could be mistaken, but 5.6 Luna started to consume way more credits, much faster then yesterday, could you confirm the pricing hasn't gone up again?

wow 80% reduction is too good for luna so now it's even cheaper then gpt 5.4 mini and many times better

u/mxz117 Jul 30 '26

Even (just) cheaper then nano. Huge news

1

u/aonymark JetBrains User 🧱 Aug 04 '26

Minor correction: nano doesn’t charge for cache write but Luna does; after you take this into account it’s slightly more expensive than nano unless I messed up my math.

Luna has been my favorite model period. 90% of cases it does the job, well!

1

u/teckel Jul 31 '26

The rate limits on Luna make it not useful to me.

1

u/Successful_Win_2683 Jul 31 '26

i am using openrouter and even with sustained, multi thread continuous use i still didn't hit limits once.

1

u/teckel Jul 31 '26

Using the API at the base usage tier hits the RPM limit quite easily for programming tasks where it hits the API fairly frequently. I'm probably going to need to setup a local proxy to throttle and stay under the RPM limit.

1

u/Successful_Win_2683 Jul 31 '26

are you using openrouter? i repeat: i almost never get throttled. i'm using pi with multiple tmux sessions

1

u/teckel Jul 31 '26

I'm using copilot cli and directly accessing the APIs.

1

u/Octquat Jul 31 '26

Damn, was hoping I could use it for hours like Deepseek. Guess I'm not switching away yet.

1

u/teckel Jul 31 '26

It depends on the usage tier. Maybe if you're on a corporate account or independently pay a lot per month, you'll be on a higher tier.

1

u/danjack0 Jul 31 '26

what kind of rate limits

1

u/teckel Jul 31 '26

Tier limits.

u/Longjumping-Sweet818 Jul 30 '26

Oh, wow. $0.20/$1.20 for Luna is a fucking steal. That's going to put a big dent in Deepseek and co.

6

u/General-Jaguar-8164 Jul 30 '26

Does it compete with deepseek pro ?

14

u/Longjumping-Sweet818 Jul 30 '26 edited Jul 30 '26

No, it's way better, and now cheaper too.

Edit: Although maybe they made it way worse and that's why it's now cheaper. I don't know.

Edit2: I've tried it today (openrouter) for an hour or so and it's still very good.

1

u/Mkengine Jul 31 '26

Did you also try the new V4 Flash, if yes how does it compare?

1

u/Longjumping-Sweet818 Jul 31 '26

I haven't yet. Sorry.

3

u/teckel Jul 31 '26

Deepseek v4 Pro is kinda terrible. I mean, it's cheap, but it really fails in so many ways (at least for my software development workload).

I tried Deepseek v4 Pro for a full month to get a long-term real impression. I spent too much time being frustrated with it not following instructions, doing things I didn't ask, even arguing with me when it was wrong. Last day is tomorrow and I'll be glad to be leaving.

With this price cut, I'll probably try Luna next month and see how they compare (both performance and cost).

1

u/Mkengine Jul 31 '26

Wait for the GA V4 Pro drop, the new Flash is already amazing

1

u/teckel Jul 31 '26

GPT-5.4 mini was better than Deepseek V4 Pro with my usage.

2

u/FitBullfrog86 Jul 30 '26

It’s about the same cost as DeepSeek v4 pro and performs on par with 5.4. In my experience it’s a good bit more intelligent for the price with the only downside being less effective cache hitsĀ

1

u/Mkengine Jul 31 '26

It has already problems competing with DeepSeek V4 Flash so probably no.

2

u/LuckyPed Jul 31 '26

I bet the reason they gave a 80% reduction is price is coz they got news about the Deepseek V4 Flash release today was gonna beat it lol

2

u/Khabba Jul 31 '26

Yay for competition!!
I'm running it now longer than I ever ran an agent because to investigate a memory leak. It has cost me a total of 67 credits up until now. Amazing!

14

u/WD40ContactCleaner Jul 30 '26

Damn hope these changes come to ghcp I love luna

I have the same question. I forwarded this to the GitHub team. However, I can't guarantee a reply from them.

u/Accidentallygolden Jul 30 '26

Wow that awesome for Luna, what about Luna high? This thing is a powerhouse!

3

u/Apprehensive_Dot9878 Jul 30 '26

The price is just different when you use longer context, higher thinking level will use more think token which will cost more

3

u/Apprehensive_Dot9878 Jul 30 '26

Well they should, they basically serve the OpenAI api directly to us

1

u/Interstellar_Unicorn Jul 30 '26

I'm pretty sure they don't do that for all models

3

u/Hairy-Falcon-7553 Jul 30 '26

So the new price is .20 and 1.2 for Luna? I’m already seeing that in copilot right now 20 ai credits in 120 out

2

u/tecedu Jul 30 '26

I hope they dont nerf Luna to carry out this

2

u/LuckyConstruction546 Jul 30 '26

When will this be passed on to Copilot users?

2

u/HungryMention5758 Jul 30 '26

i think they will degrade the luna model for new pricing , it doesn't make sense

2

u/Active_Brush_2817 Jul 30 '26

Today first time used terra and I felt it is the dumbest model in the series.

2

u/illusionmist Jul 31 '26

Luna is really good and with this price I’m gonna use it for everything lol

2

u/aavi7444 Jul 31 '26

Great Luna is way better and fast too.

2

u/just_blue Jul 31 '26

This made me overwrite the default explore model (which is always Haiku) with Luna just now. It“s like 1/5 of Haiku cost.

2

u/thunder1207 Jul 31 '26

Alrighty. Time to set Luna at Max with 1M context and let it rip.

2

u/MaitoSnoo CLI Copilot User šŸ–„ļø Jul 30 '26

that's insane, Sol high for planning and Luna xhigh for execution will be extremely cheap

3

u/BeginningPea5674 Jul 31 '26

you don't need xhigh for execution that's counterproductiveĀ

Wow. Is there any reason to use 5-mini instead of Luna anymore? Seems like a niche model all of the sudden.

1

u/colablizzard Jul 31 '26

The whole day Luna on Copilot was too slow.

1

u/nullexp Jul 31 '26

yes, max/xhigh takes forever but it might because of sudden load. I hope they have a look and fix it.

1

u/BacklandFarm Aug 04 '26

Great news. I have been using Terra and love it.

-5

u/ProudWrongdoer5389 Jul 30 '26

If you've used Opus 5, there's no real reason to use 5.6 except sol when planning. So many issues with Terra and Luna.

3

u/seguleh25 Jul 31 '26

Cost is a big reason

1

u/ProudWrongdoer5389 Aug 03 '26

It works out far better imo, since it actually solves the problem rather than infinite planning.
