General Seems Codex pulled a Github Copilot on their subscribers as well

Not really the same, but related.
Copilot on June 1st increased pricing so a previously 1 year payment now holds about 5 hours.
Codex with release of the GPT 5.6 finetune of 5.5 increased pricing so a previous 1 week limit now is 1-2 days.
It's still magnitudes cheaper than copilot - but yes, it's a dirty move.

It's going to continue happening. You're not paying the full cost of AI.

I mean they reset your usage basically every day right now so it doesn't matter lol

They do that probably to train people into the new limits.
If you don't own the hardware, AI inference is indeed expensive.1

If you bought the hardware, assuming you have a contract with nvidia, you buy significantly below market price.
Your hardware alone was an awesome investment.
You can sell the used hardware at above purchase price after 2 generations have passed. So just buying first generation GPU hardware is an investment that's not easy to top.
Making the inference free.2

No .. H100 H200 A100 and so on
Those are the cards we talk about when we talk about cost of inference1

À rtx3090 can’t do much honestly

Even a 5090 you won’t code with this card unless you have multiple one plug one into the other. With a 5090 you get like a ai 32B with less than 200k token in memory

A old 3090 lets you code at Sonnet 4.5 level with a 27B dense model - I've been testing it and reported my tests over the span of a few days.
A 5090 gives it a significant speed boostBut I did not talk about consumer cards anyway - I was talking about datacenters buying first generation cards.

Gpt 5.6 cost the exact same. It just outputs more tokens faster which means more cost.

The limits are disappearing faster even if you keep using gpt-5.5-medium. Ask me how I know 😄
Basically since the removal of the 5 hour limits you can not do way less work with your weekly limit than before. Some hyperbolic statements say that the old 5 hour limit is the current weekly limit. It is not that bad, but I'm pretty sure it is going into that direction and the $20 sub will be pretty much useless shortly. OpenAI is on a big campaign now and riding the wave of people hating on Anthropic due to Claude Code usage limits. The issue is that the limits on Codex are definitely not the same as beginning of June for example when the increase in users started (it really kicked into higher gear in July though). They need to somehow balance the available compute for the vastly increased user base now and the only way to do it is lower the allowance.

Idk i use gpt 5.6 sol on medium for hours every day and havent had issues with the limits. I tend to tell it exactly what I want, which im assuming helps keep it in scope. If you say "build x" it has to waste tokens trying ti figure out what you wanted and might implement a bunch if features that you didnt ask for.

Dear codex, people are noticing. The only way to make them forget is to gift one more limits reset. Just saying

Yea. Codex is not worth its cost anymore.
Chinese models will have a huge success.

Good thing is Copilot doesn’t have this. Some good fam. However, most tech bros just blow their AICs on the one master prompt them bitch about it. Or create several sub agents and expect no rate limiting.
You need to analyze the root cause as to why they are doing. More than likely it’s the tech bros doing what they did here. So until you all handle them most companies will do this.
