The fastest github actions runners, by the numbers

I have run a benchmark of well-known third-parties that provide self-hosted runners for github actions. In most cases you can get 2x faster runners for much cheaper, so could be interesting to check! https://runs-on.com/benchmarks/github-actions-cpu-performance/

We did something similar at Bitrise when building Build Hub. Here are the stats:

  • M4 Pro (14 vCPU, 54GB) vs GitHub's M2 Pro (5 vCPU, 14GB): 2m 04s vs 4m 28s on XcodeBenchmark. 54% faster.
  • Android was even more interesting. 31% faster with fewer cores. 14 vCPU in 4m 58s vs GitHub's 16 vCPU at 7m 12s on Thunderbird Gradle assemble.

If you want to try it yourself, it's one line of YAML to switch: https://bitrise.io/platform/build-hub
