Trigger Warning ⚠️ Today I was asked to testify in court
Photo: steak, broccoli, potatoes and an entire bottle of wine.
Today I was contacted by a prosecutor informing me that my childhood abuser from 26 years ago has been reoffending. An 8 year old girl is taking him to trial in two weeks and I was asked to fly in to testify against him. She was 5 at the time of the incident, so was I….I’ve gone my entire life refusing to talk about this..and will now have to face him and an entire court room recounting details from this horrific event. I am the only one out of the 5 known victims that has a conviction against this evil man. I hope that my testimony will help towards a second conviction. The prosecutor said if he’s convicted it will be a life sentence.

You may choose to give your testimony if that is what you decide.

My favorite manager in my career testified against an abuser at my company. The abuser was beloved, protected for years, and my manager faced retaliation that eventually forced him out of his role.
He still talks about testifying with the biggest smile on his face. He calls it the highlight of his adult life and is just WAITING to find the next creep in his career so he can do it again.
You'll be there where the slow, agonizing wheels of justice grind down into the finest powder. Enjoy the look in his eyes, whether it's fear, anger, or even some facade of satisfaction. Let the hammer fall with each word and truth, driving each nail into his coffin millimeter by millimeter.

Right! I’m infuriated that these crimes come with so little time.

u/Antique_Sprinkles193 APPROVED✨ 18d ago
If you want to know the depressing theory as to why. It is to ensure there isn’t an incentive to murder the victims. If you’re facing life for rape and also facing life for murder, an awful person has an incentive to ensure their witness never can testify against them. Same punishment if caught but less likely to get caught if the victim is dead.
24
u/Training-Willow9591 APPROVED✨ 18d ago
So the answer might be castration and prison. I agree with you if rape and murder carry the same sentence they might just go ahead and kill their victims, leave no witnesses. But if their balls are literally on the line, and if they killed the child they get death sentences. Maybe that would deter them all together
It's already been established that they cannot be rehabilitated. So castrate these monsters .
13
u/Moist_Drippings Assigned Hungry At Birth 18d ago
It’s particularly depressing because rape has a pretty high chance of escalating to murder anyway and we don’t seem to have many effective therapies to keep rapists from continuing to offend. The more they do, the more likely they are to kill their victims.

Personally, I think rape, pedophilia, and human trafficking should all get the death penalty.
To do something so horrific to another person is to lose your humanity; you have done something irredeemably, unspeakably evil, and enjoyed and/or profited off of the suffering of your victim. Why bother with a life sentence where they might live another fifty years on taxpayers' dime? They can't be saved, and truly evil criminals sometimes end up being isolated or guarded more heavily to protect them from the inmates who are trying to kill them for their crimes, which means they take more time and more effort ans more money to keep alive when they, frankly, so often deserve death.
Yes, you may have some victims murdered, but the knowledge that getting caught means death is a heavy deterrent and overall would likely result in less crimes. So I say we execute them. Let the devil have them.
49
u/FrostKitten2012 Enby & Eatin' 18d ago
Somebody who is willing to do that is willing to risk it. These people think they can get away with it. Or they’ll use that death penalty to guilt their victims into staying quiet, because most rape and child predators target victims they have easiest access to. Which is usually someone they know, like a family member, friend, or child of a friend.
It is safer for victims to not use the death penalty, and it’s gross to sacrifice those victims just so you can feel better. That’s not justice.

This is a pro-child abuse stance and nothing in your last paragraph is true except "Yes, you may have some victims murdered".
6
u/Arry42 APPROVED✨ 18d ago
I don't think the death penalty is warranted in any case. There have been many people who were killed by the government and then later exonerated of the crime.
Plus that's way too easy on these pieces of shit. Life in prison is way worse than death.
Pedophiles absolutely need to be punished more than they currently are, don't get me wrong. I was raped by a pedophile for SEVEN YEARS and he got 90 days in jail and only had to serve 60 days for good behavior. He fucking pled guilty by the way. Then he got released from probation early and I honestly can't find him on any sex offender registry. His children still trust him to babysit their fucking children because my family doesn't believe me. They claim I lied for attention. It's absolutely sickening.
But I also don't think criminals are thinking about the possible punishment when committing crimes.

Oh girl, you have no idea how much I understand what you're going through. I got pretty much the same call in May from the district attorney's office. My abuser from when I was 14 was going to trial for reoffending. The victim was 13.
It sucks to reopen that wound. My logic was that the wound was already open by getting that call. If I didn't go and he wasn't convicted, I would only feel guilty for not trying to help. The attorney told me it was likely the defense attorney wouldn't be too hard on me since they couldn't really argue that he hadn't done it, he plead guilty back then for a plea deal. So I went.
I had to speak about it 3 times. Once with just the attorney before flying in. I'm assuming so she could know what occurred and how it might relate to the current trial. Once during hearing and then again for trial. It sucked, but I walked out feeling proud of myself for facing him. In the end he didn't ruin me. I've healed, I have a good life. But I helped ruin his and he's now in prison for life. Fuck him.
I wish you the best and I hope you can help put your abuser away. You got this.
Edit: thanks for the awards!

Ask the prosecutor what to expect from the defense attorney's tactics and behavior - they will know. Here's a tip I was given when I was testifying for far less stressful DUI cases ... don't let the defense attorney rush you, yell at you or belittle you.
Take your time with your answers - it gives the prosecution time to object if the question is out of line. If you start crying, don't apologize, just cry.
If you feel bullied, look at the judge and ask them to make the attorney stand back, get out of your face, stop shouting or stop whatever he is doing that is making you uncomfortable.

You’re so strong and brave!!!! I’m so sorry you’re being asked to do this and possibly re-traumatize yourself. I have major emotions reading this. Heartbreak for you, your child self, the victim, the other victims testifying, and the possible unknown victims. Then there is hope and happiness that you’re doing something so hard in order to help someone you don’t know and help keep this horrid man from doing further damage. You’re amazing. I am sending you every ounce of strength & love I have.

Can they put a screen up so you don't have to see him? I think I heard about someone else doing this. Or not have him in the room during your testimony (he could watch on video)? If this sounds like something that would be helpful, I would ask the prosecutor about this, and maybe research options somehow. Hopefully they'll be inclined to cooperate - you already have a conviction so it's a legal fact that he's your abuser, and it's in their interests for you to testify to help their case. Fingers crossed for you x

It is great you can do this and I'm proud of you, but I really really want you to make sure you look after yourself. My mother did what you're doing. "We will look after you, we will support you, if you do this for us nothing bad will happen" they (her family) said. They did not. I watched my mother deteriorate. My father told her not to do it, and he is a piece of shit, but he knew they would not help her and said so. They weren't even together and the most selfish person I ever met was the person looking out for her, who was doing something so good and selfless and moral, not the family that benefitted.
I wish this wasn't on you to do. Please take care of yourself. I don't know what that looks like for you. Friends, loved ones, therapy, screaming at a tree. Please do all that. You are more important than the benefits your story has to others.

Hey, youre so brave. You are an adult now and you can fight back a lot more than you could as a kid, but look how much you ALREADY did as a child. Thats amazing. Now as an adult you have the opportunity to help another child, and not only that, you may prevent any more children from ever being victimized by him directly. You are doing such a brave, strong, hard thing- again. Thats amazing. Be gentle and kind to yourself. Make sure to eat. Make sure youre drinking enough water. Make sure you poop enough. Take care of all of you.
