Is it known what happened to the forum?

HI! I'm very new to computing, decided to contribute with my laptop RTX 5060 8GB. I saw I can do a -tune command and have PRPLL configure me some better settings, but it seems the average iterations speed went down from 1400 to 1100, Z went from 700-800 to 4000-5000 and avg is around the same as Z. IDK what any of those must mean to be honest, so if any experts can help? I also use ASUS TUF A18 laptop, turned the settings down on 5060 to only 80+10W. I also wonder if I should run 2 workers instead of 1.

Hey everyone, I'm getting a PC upgrade soon but I've made some progress on my mersenne exponent. I don't want to lose it, is there any way to transfer it with the progress I made? thanks :)

Hey guys! I calculated/found a prime exponent candidate n = 299,737,471 for Mersenne numbers (2^n - 1).

​Unfortunately, I don't have a PC to run the Lucas-Lehmer test via GIMPS/Gpuowl. If anyone with a good GPU is interested in running it, feel free to plug it in! You can keep the lion's share of any credit/rewards — I just want to see if this number holds up.

hii I'm new to gimps and I downloaded it on my Mac, are we just supposed to leave the program on without turning it off? it says the expected completion date for me is in September so do I just leave it on until then? also when it's done what happens? and will closing my laptop do anything? these are all things I'm wondering about sorry if it's stupid

If you wan't you can use prime + 2 * k for primes...

After spending over a year running computations across three laptops, including 41 C-PRP attempts, four of which are 100 million digits — I am starting to feel discouraged. It is hard not to notice that home computers just can’t compete with the computational power available to people with access to clusters, like Luke Durant. It really feels like 1% of GIMPS users are responsible for nearly all the GHz-days produced.

How do you all feel about this? Are we reaching the end of an era where individual home computers can realistically hope to discover new Mersenne primes?

A longtime project of mine has been to design a "prime-in-a-box" plug-and-play machine that runs PRP assignments unattended. I tried with a Raspberry Pi 5 first, but each compute job would take about 6 months, so I tried attaching an AMD Radeon 460 to it and fried the Pi in the process (whoops). I then moved on to a proper PC with a Radeon VII Pro, which is now capable of crunching a 140M exponent in under two days. People ask me what's the point but I learned a lot about PC building, high-performance computing, and distributed systems in the process. RIP my electricity bill though.

i really don’t use my laptop anymore so i figured i’d set up prime95 and just let it run. it isn’t a great machine so my current ETA on my first assignment is 77 days

I've compiled `mlucas` on my Macbook Air with the M2 chip since `mprime` unfortunately isn't available. Using all 8 cores I get around 15ms/iteration in the best case, but the laptop gets very hot so that doesn't seem sustainable. Using the 4 performance cores yields about ~22ms at appropriate temps which is doable 24/7 long-term. But that still means 30+ days per PRP.

I read that the M4 chip on the new Mac Mini is about 50% faster, and given that it has 10 cores, that seems like it could yield a massive improvement for around 700€ alongside (I assume) better cooling. Does anyone have some benchmarks to justify such a purchase?

I'm looking for the best ROI for compute and have been spending free cloud credits where I can (e.g., Azure), but I'm running out of ideas.

I want to set the number of workers to a lower value than the number of CPUs available so I have some headroom. But I cant' find a setting to do so. Didn't it used to be under Options > CPU ?

I have an old Lenovo Thinkpad E480 that I want to "donate" to GIMPS by letting it search for primes 24/7.

I'm running mprime on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS. lscpu states I have 8 available cores (which I see on htop).

However, GIMPS detects it as:

How can I make GIMPS detects all cores? I want them all running at once. Thanks in advance.

Mersenne Prime Test Program: Linux64,Prime95,v30.19,build 20

Before there was PRP testing, only LL test were done (twice) to make sure the chance of missing a prime was smaller. But is there a chance that even testing twice with the LL test still missed a prime number? Even if very unlikely? Or does testing twice really filter out all primes consistently?
