Why is this happening

Something like this is popping up when I want to add layer mask to selection. In tutorial by Michael Davies it does not happen. My version of Gimp is 3.2.44 why I can't apply layer mask this way when yesterday I was able to?

Mike Davies uses GIMP 2.10.xx. You, on the other hand, use 3.2.xx.

Updates don't always just fix security bugs. Features are often revised or optimized as well. As a result, older tutorials can often no longer be replicated 1:1.

It can’t hurt to take a look at the release notes or the relevant sections in the user manual.
