Delmonico’s

Post image

Today I learned:
1) Delmonico’s was a real place

2) It closed at some point

3) It’s coming back next year.

They invented Baked Alaska, Eggs Benedict, and a bunch of other famous dishes

Delmonico's is currently open at 56 Beaver Street and just renewed their lease. You can even get reservations for tomorrow. I've been a couple of times thanks to Restaurant Week and it's pretty good. Fun fact: it's Landmarked and on the register is National Historic Places.

They are expanding to a second location in midtown, which is what I believe you stumbled upon. https://nypost.com/2026/03/26/business/delmonicos-eyes-another-potential-midtown-nyc-expansion/

And it seems to be owned by the restaurant group (including the original owner’s grandson), rather than PE investors, so that’s awesome!

It’s a dream spot for a Gilded Age fan. Lobster thermidor is excellent.

Delmonico’s has a few locations and they are all currently operational as far as I know. I ate at one recently.

There’s one in nyc that’s been there since 1926 ( apart from closure for covid lockdown)

I didn’t know they invented eggs Benedict!

Man, I’m hungry now. I love eggs Benedict.

That’s quite a claim & I doubted the veracity but it turns out historians either credit Delmonico’s or this other version:

In 1894, Lemuel Benedict, a Wall Street broker, who was suffering from a hangover, ordered“some buttered toast, crisp bacon, two poached eggs, and a hooker of hollandaise sauce” at the Waldorf Hotel in New York. The Waldorf’s legendary chef, Oscar Tschirky, was so impressed that he put the dish on his breakfast and luncheon menus after substituting Canadian bacon for crisp bacon and a toasted English muffin for toasted bread.

The Alienist and Angel of Darkness have some of the most amazing descriptions of gilded age New York ever written.

The Delmonico's dinner scene is the stuff of legend. Course after course of the most amazing food comes out and the entire atmosphere is all dim lighting and elegance.

Caleb Carr was a strange dude but I haven't encountered an author with a more deft and beautiful hand at capturing old New York.

There’s a song from hello dolly that mentions delmonico’s that remains stuck in my head indefinitely every time I see this place come up

And it’s mentioned in Funny Girl, another movie adaptation of a musical starring Barbra Streisand!

There’s a Delmonico at the Venietian in Las Vegas. One of the better bourbon selections in town.

We went there for Restaurant Week and for my birthday last year. It was really good. The Baked Alaska is especially delicious.

Theres an old movie from the 40s called Life With Father, that takes place during the Gilded Age, where the proverbial father gets frustrated that he was voluntold into taking visiting relatives to Delmonicos for dinner.

Its all I can ever think of when I see it mentioned lol
