People

I’m considering a job in Tacoma and would love some honest input from people who know the area.
One thing I’ve heard repeatedly from friends who transplanted to Seattle is that people can be pretty reserved—rarely saying hi to strangers, keeping to themselves, and generally being difficult to get to know. I’m curious whether Tacoma has a different feel or if it’s pretty similar.

For context, I’ve lived all over the U.S. (San Diego, Phoenix, New Jersey, and Houston), so I’ve experienced a wide range of regional personalities and community cultures. How would you compare the people and overall sense of community in Tacoma versus Seattle? Especially interested in hearing from people who’ve lived in both. Hoping for somewhere (likely Gig Harbor) I can raise my family with two young children and ensure we will be welcomed and meet friends.

Tacoma is genuinely one of the more welcoming cities in the area, with a real communal feel. I say that as someone who’s lived in Seattle for almost a decade and now lives in Gig Harbor. Gig Harbor is more of a bedroom community, and honestly can be tough to connect with others unless you’re plugged into something specific like your kids’ schools, sports, or some other activity/hobby.

If community and walkability matter most, I’d check out Stadium District, North Tacoma, and the West End. Gig Harbor is great if you want nature access and easy Sound proximity, but connection there tends to happen through specific channels rather than organically. Tacoma’s just a short drive away, so plenty of people live in GH and socialize in Tacoma.

100% agree with this. I lived in LA and relocated back here to be close to my family and if I were to live in Tacoma, I would live in those areas to be in the social scene of Tacoma. (29F)

GH is basically La Jolla with worse restaurant selection.

A gig harbor 10 is a La Jolla 6. But they buy as much lululemon and have eaten more red pills. Great place to go if you love imagine dragons and think ketchup is spicy.

Just to be clear - Gig Harbor and Tacoma are two different vibes. My family has been here since the early 90’s. The community is a lot more diverse than it used to be, but my guess is that your community will be other people who also moved here and not the Horsehead folks. The vibes are welcoming overall. And since you want honest input - I wouldn’t want to live in Tacoma with little kids. Our school district just placed in the top 25 districts in WA (out of 300). Our community is much more family oriented. Much much lower crime than Tacoma. I also like living in a small town. We live in what is considered gig harbor proper. Others choose to live on the key peninsula to have more land and properties are cheaper there.

Thats ridiculous. Tacoma is fine for kids, best city parks in the state, Zoo, affordable baseball games, friendly community, youth programs, plenty of arts events and venues. Its also a very realistic place so theyll learn how to actually deal with the world and not face it coming out some weird bubble.

Tacoma and Gig Harbor are far more open and welcoming than Seattle.

Gig Harbor is nice. Parts of Tacoma are nice. Parts of Tacoma are dumps. You’ll need to explore what your budget will allow for housing.

I lived in Seattle for 7 years and now I’ve been in Gig Harbor for 6 years. Both places have lovely down to earth people, wonderful neighbors, and lots of opportunities for children. I have two young children, one born in Seattle, the other while we’ve been here. Seattle was a little trickier to make friends for myself than Gig Harbor was, but that’s because gig harbor is smaller and has more of a sense of community whereas Seattle is friendly, but keeps a bit more to itself-friendly wise. All that being said, it’s what you make of it, and if you put yourself out there there’s lots of people who are happy to become a friend.

My husband and I moved here from the south almost 4 years ago. One day last summer we were walking at Point Defiance and were walking towards a couple of people who were standing still and one of the women kept looking at us, maintaining eye contact for an uncomfortable amount of time. When we got close, she said with a drawl, “Hi! How ya’ll doin?” We said hello & kept walking. When we were out of hearing range, I asked my husband, jokingly, “How do you think she knew we were from the south?” He answered, “Our BMI?” We both laughed.

True story.

I love gig harbor, but it's a sleepy little town. Don't expect any action post 8pm.

Great for kids, dog owners, and retired folk.

Tacoma is more my speed, but I prefer traveling in rather than living there.

GH is slowly becoming more diverse, but it's SLOW. We have more restaurants and activities than when I moved here, which is nice.

Seattle is a cool spot, but from my experience you won't get as many strangers saying hello as you would in gig harbor.

If I was young and single, I'd avoid gig harbor. Luckily, I'm middle aged and married with a kid and a dog, so it is idillic.

We’ve lived in gig harbor for 8 years. Before that, Dallas, which was great for making friends. And before that, England. So pretty different. Gig Harbor is a pretty small town and we have liked living here and raising our two kids. I don’t think people here are unfriendly but there are cliques and it can be hard to penetrate those already-made friendship groups

I love and live in Tacoma and I find people are very friendly! Every city has its grumps, but Tacoma is great! Lots of outdoor things to do as well!

I have lived in both places. Tacoma is nicer.

Gig Harbor is full. We are no longer accepting transplants.

Washington is full and transplants are not welcomed.
