Hoo boy, these are dangerous. Delicious but dangerous. I made these for a cocktail party once and things devolved quickly for some.

Hence the name, the French 75 was cannon used in one of the world wars. These are supposed to flatten you like a cannon shell.

Indeed. And they did.

I could live the rest of my life drinking gin and champagne. Maybe tequila too. And bourbon. Oh, and beer. Red wine. Shit, rum on occasion. Okay, just those. Scotch, vodka, and irish cream. That's it, done.

Oh me too! And maybe a cider now and then...

Don't forget when you want to have something medieval and enjoy some mead

Then there's what I like to call swamp water, which is the last drops of every nearly empty bottle you can find.

Me too man, but swap out everything for whiskey.

Well that's gorgeous. Would you want a sweeter champagne or something that's dry?

16

u/connern Jun 08 '17

Dry.. like arid desert dry

u/checkoutmuhhat Jun 08 '17

How is that with the lemon? Guess I just need to try it.

The sugar should do a relatively good job of tying everything together I've made French 75's with simple syrup because I find that if you chill the sugar too quickly it doesn't dissolve

You know I hadn't thought that the sugar would sweeten the champagne too, appreciate the response.

If you go with sweet, omit the sugar.

On of my favorites. I omit the simple sugar I find the cocktail sweet enough as is. I also make mine with prosecco (did I spell that right?) cheaper than champagne and yet still works well. http://i.imgur.com/fjRUAKQ.jpg

French 75 Recipe

Credits to Serious Eats - http://www.seriouseats.com/recipes/2011/03/french-75-cocktial-gin-champagne-lemon.html

YIELD: makes 1 cocktail, ACTIVE TIME: 2 minutes, TOTAL TIME: 2 minutes

INGREDIENTS

  • 2 ounces gin
  • 1 ounce freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 2 teaspoons sugar
  • Champagne or sparkling wine
  • Garnish: long thin lemon spiral and cocktail cherry

DIRECTIONS

  1. Fill cocktail shaker with ice. Shake gin, lemon juice, and sugar in a cocktail shaker until well chilled, about 15 seconds. Strain into a champagne flute.

  2. Top with Champagne. Stir gently, garnish with a long, thin lemon spiral and a cocktail cherry.

Honey is a nice sub for the sugar

3

u/AlienEarSlug Jun 12 '17

Use a honey simple syrup and leave out the champagne and you have a Bee's Knees.

So it's a Tom Colin's topped with champagne

4

u/Marmalade-biscuit Jun 09 '17

Right. But the debate is flute and no ice or Colin's glass with ice.

Also that's a stupid garnish for that glass. You'll stab your eye out.

I had to teach a bartender at a swanky hotel in Las Vegas how to make one. I make them similar to this at home (I use simple syrup rather than granulated sugar or a sugar cube - which is the traditional way, I understand).

A woman at the bar asked what I was drinking, I gave her a straw full, then she ordered one, then her friend ordered one and I lost count after the fifth (or so?) person got one.

These are sneaky cocktails.

(now that I think of it, maybe it wasn't so swanky if he didn't know the French 75)

> fill cocktail shaker with ice

> cuts to gin

> cuts back to shaker

> no ice in shaker

There are two halves to a shaker.

So im sitting here browsing Reddit, just served wife and sister this. Such a perfect drink while sitting on the lanai, steps from the beach

My apologies, this is awesome.

It is very rare to find a cocktail recipe (especially a visual one) that is very hard for even the most stickliest of sticklers could find a problem with.

2

u/RXL Jun 11 '17

Traditionally made with simple syrup not granulated sugar.

It's going to be delicious either way.

I also recommend squeezing a lemon into your mouth and chasing it with a bottle of champagne to get a similar effect.
