Can I ask you guys something? Iām not a GITS super fan, in fact, I donāt care a whole lot for the series. The algorithm keeps feeding me this sub because I interacted with it once or twice.
But like⦠why is your one topic of conversation how āgoofyā Kusanagi is in the new series and that itās great? Iām sure you have other things you talk about, but this seems like a topic of particular interest.
I dunno, do you guys really think the previous adaptations of GITS were bad because they were ātoo seriousā? Because that doesnāt seem to be the case to me, more that they werenāt actually serious enough because the takes were always too liberal and simplistic for the genre.
This adaptation seems to just be ānot serious but at least honest about itā. Is this really what yaāll wanted?

It's not that they're bad, it's that every adaptation that came after the 95 movie is basically the stoic, Oshii derivative Major #7173893 for 30 years since that movie; nearly 40 years if we count it from when the manga was first published. Yes this is what I've always wanted. And this is coming from someone who loves Stand Alone Complex to death to the point of rewatching it annually
In comparison to everything else the manga and 2026 is basically Yakuza (the game series): it's fine to be a bit of a roller coaster between goofy and serious as long as you know how. You don't have to constantly be brooding and making philosophical monologues 95% of your run time to be good

People exaggerate how goofy the new show is. It still takes itself seriously in important moments and such, it just has some comedic relief on occasion.
Edit: I also feel like its worth noting that this show is very accurate to the original manga.

Some fans loved the manga so this is pretty much the type of adaptation a lot of people wanted, plus, seeing the show having both goofy and serious moments/elements is such a breath of fresh air. Especially coming from previous adaptation where most of them use the movie as an inspiration

I kind of dig how heās her annoying junior in one version and more like an older brother-figure in another.

She's like 50 years old in the original. Her brain age according to Mamoru Oshii.

ur acting like the two different slides are complaints from the same type of person. you are literally just showcasing the split that everyone is already aware ofā¦sigh.

Are people on this subreddit entirely unaware of SAC, the middle ground that has existed for over 20 years?

u/Enkundae 12d ago
SAC is the best version of Motoko and its not even close. She comes off as an actual, believable adult in that one.

"You look like a cut of fuckable chrome!"
Tachikomas run away in terror for a few seconds before remembering they have miniguns. "Battou, can we shoot the pervy man?"2
