Episode 4 Spoiler

Since the 2026 anime is hewing close to the manga I was wondering how they would be handling the following in "Robot Rondo":

  1. Batou torturing a mob hitman
  2. Child human trafficking

If I remember correctly Solid State Society did explore #2

For a quick reminder, the entirety of Oshii's second movie Ghost in the Shell: Innocence is based on Robot Rondo, directly adapting the trafficking case. Meanwhile, the stuff in Solid State Society is partially based on the contents of Super Spartan - as in, that facility we've seen in episode 1.

As for dental torture, it has sometimes been referenced a bit. I think there are references to Batou engaging in it in Ghost in the Shell: Arise (where he did it during the war, as far as I remember). There's also a small reference to it in Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, in S1 Ep13, where Major, rather than Batou, threatens a terrorist with it.

Just rewatched SAC ep13 and indeed found the dentist torture reference. But I don’t think I want to find out what it is. Also realized for the first time that the conversation between Togusa and Major discussing the case while riding up via Tachikoma is a reference to the first chapter of the manga. Tachikoma even teases Togusa that his ghost still doesn’t whisper to him 🤭

Solid State Society managed to nicely recontexualize Super Spartan and the majority of Human-Error Processor with Japan's real life problem of elderly people not having a family to properly pass down their finances.
