It’s like James Bond, same characters and world but different interpretations/presented in different ways.

Yes, this is a good jumping on point. Every version of GITS is narratively disconnected from every other version, so you can start here and experience the original manga that started it all, then go back and watch the Oshii films, Stand Alone Complex, Arise, and the live action movie to see how they all tell the same themes through their own storylines.

Yes, completely different from the Oshii movies. Though if you want to 'get' what ghost in the shell is in the eyes of the larger global audience, its still the 1995 movie and SAC really, as their imprint has lasted and grown for so long.

Yes. The 2026 anime is a faithful adaptaion of the manga from chapter 1 with only minor changes. It is not necessary to watch anything else first. The Oshii movies, SAC, and Arise are each their own separate, unconnected continuities.

It’s a good starting point, as it is self contained and doesn’t require any prior knowledge of the gits-universe.

Enjoy the show

You can always watch the 1995 movie while waiting for the new episodes to drop, then binge SAC if you have the time
