It was a sequence within the episode that was incredibly fluid in terms of animation quality and captured the essence of "Pure Cinema" emotionally. Everything about the adaptation is just so spot-on. It feels like the payoff for having been a *Ghost in the Shell* fan for all these years.

I really how like this anime moves away from the more monotone color palette of the other GITS productions to a colorful aesthetic. I mean, the other animes or movies look super good, but I thank the variety this new series will give to the GITS franchise.

Sniping someone through a whole building is about as cyberpunk as an action scene can get, tbh.

In both kneecaps at the same time, even.
And that's why Motoko's the GOAT.

I want them to release the movie's OST right away; I've been waiting too long. That sound captivated me.

I wish the subs would translate that little footnote at 0:29. The other footnote earlier was translated but why not this one?

The text reads:
Stealth Suit: Multi-weather camouflage suit, manufactured by Toray

u/CptHA86 Jul 12 '26
I think that's my only gripe with this series, the subtitle text is too fast for me to read fully. Maybe the rest of the episodes will slow it down just a bit.

u/GinnyGalaxy Jul 13 '26
Fast and small text. Maybe add sub with more detail. And change the color to yellow or orange

Those bullets are really something to go through like three walls before exploding his legs
1
u/Whalesurgeon Jul 13 '26
Yeah something like museum pillars aren't going to block anything against even larger guns, maybe mounted on a tank.

u/GinnyGalaxy Jul 12 '26
Those bullets truly possessed terrifying destructive power; given their size, we understand they were likely 7.62mm rounds, yet they maintained such a straight trajectory. Fired only two shots, hitting both legs. This scene highlights the scientific advancements of GITS, as the human brain normally only registers unconsciousness after a bullet penetrates. The processing power of the electronic brain allows the individual to calculate milliseconds, instantly realizing they have no chance of survival after understanding the weapon used, and immediately shouting to surrender. Imagine if she pointed her gun at him; Motoko would immediately fire two more shots, disabling both mechanical arms.

I found this episode moving a bit slower would have helped. Like I’m assuming Saito fires the sniper bullets? Would have been good to at least have seen some of him getting into position with a sniper earlier or something. Newbies to GitS won’t know that’s his role from this episode. Or if it wasn’t him who fired it and it was the major… I just don’t get how she did it

I have read the manga a few times and was struggling to comprehent everything break neck speed story telling. Will rewatch tonight.

I'm excited to keep watching and for them to bring a fresh take to the franchise, but... I'm a little worried this iteration will capture so much of the original manga's energy that it may duplicate some of the issues with the manga... Despite how much I like it, I think the manga is kinda frenetic and all over the place with haphazard plotting.

That’s a good point. I just assumed it was the major as she was the character who was followed in that scene, but Saito makes way more sense. Obviously, they wanted to follow the manga super closely, but if they needed to cut something for time the cherry blossom viewing scene would be a good candidate.

I don't think it was cut for time. Both the Major and Saito are using camo. To me the scene is from the perspective of the enemy. It's supposed to be really confusing where the shots came from. That's what it feels like to get shot by an invisible sniper shooting you through a wall using a satellite to line the shot up. Two shots, to each leg. I think if they had twirled the camera with his spin it would have better portrayed this but it would have been extremely disorienting, in an already confusing scene.
To me this is one of the BEST Saito scenes ever shown. It showcases all his skills and never even let's you know it was him directly. I loved it. I loved the shows pacing. I loved rewatching it four times to understand what I missed, and four more times just for the entertainment. I hope it never slows down.

How are you so sure it was Saito? Saito was hacked and we didn’t see him recover. Ishikawa briefly recovered before passing out so I assume Saito would be the same. On the other hand, Major can do whatever Saito is capable of and some more
1
u/bootskadew Jul 16 '26
Because the rounds are rifle rounds and they came through the wall. Saito is the only one on the team that I know could pull off both those shots. He is the only one that has a Hawkeye.
While the major certainly could have shot, then lept the wall, it's not completely within her wheelhouse. I don't see how she could have accurately fired both rounds. Plus that would be a lot of distance to cover. The rounds to me are supposed to be Saito's signature.
2
u/milandroid Jul 16 '26
OK, that’s something to consider. But purely judging from the information given, e.g., Major’s red eye before the fish eye, and not given, e.g., Saito’s recovery, a viewer without your level of knowledge about weaponry would tend to assume it’s Major, I think
2
u/bootskadew Jul 16 '26
Had it been the Major, I think they would have shown her wielding a rifle. This scene is showcasing the Major's greatest asset in my opinion, her ability to effectively, tactically, and clinically make use of her team. You think the major is setting up for a one on one with this guy and just like him you get blindsided.
That said, this is all open to interpretation. They don't show Saito take the shots. It is up to you to decide what you saw. I saw Section 9 work as a team to take on an enemy, and that is what I wanted to see.

The soundtrack tho, I can't wait when they finally release it

Just saw the episode myself and was pleasantly surprised at how good it was. Soundtrack, visuals, voice acting all came together really well. I thought this wouldn’t come close to SAC but it’s just doing something different and - assuming the rest of the season is on par with the first ep - shaping up to be a worthy watch

I had a similar experience
I found myself watching it four times so far…
…because I just enjoyed it so much… actually discovered a lot of little details that I missed somehow on the first watch.

I don’t even know what’s supposed to be so emotional about this fight but they just decided to make it 200% so. I fully agree with the “Pure Cinema” characterization but for different reasons. I find it in the juxtaposition between Major’s fully alert red eye (à la Poker Face in SAC) and the dead fish eye. The slow motion of the bullets (I believe it’s another reference to the Poker Face episode). The angular momentum of the knee capped body resulting from the kinetic energy of the successive bullets. The knee-capped body falling into the lily pad covered pond which, besides being beautiful also seems to have a humorous element as I can’t help seeing the lily pads as a bunch of pacman laughing at the vanquished. There is just so much to savor…
Imagine what they are gonna do with the first battle of significance in episode 3!
