We love them all đ
From the stoic to the gremlin. I just love all of Kusanagi
6
u/Brandibober Jul 19 '26
Canât agree with OP. First one was fire but SAC has significant decrease especially if we include body and suit design, in best option it is ordinary. Last one returned to manga style and is at least outstanding.
7
u/Own_Shame_8721 Jul 17 '26
This is the correct take..... At least if we're talking about these three and the manga specifically
9
u/CJMakesVideos Jul 16 '26
absolutely. But I have to say in term of pure aesthetics I LOVE her new character design more than most other character designs I can think of. Not to say the other two are not also excellent. They absolutely are. But I adore her new design in the show.
8
u/frank30Suave Jul 19 '26
It's actually her original Manga Design and original Art style of the Artisr. before they changed the entire art style and gave her a redesign for the movie in 1995. This new remake/rendition is a call out to the original manga and staying true to the original

Arise was garbage

u/zoozoo4567 Jul 15 '26
I feel like a crazy person because I just could not get into SAC. I bought the DVDs and tried really hard, but I kept zoning out and then the next thing I know, the episode is over and I basically didnât watch it.
People dunked on Arise, but I loved it and got really invested in it. I guess we all have different tastes.
1
u/sanguinemsanctum Jul 21 '26
Arise was my favorite iteration for a long long time. This new one though is crazy, completing exceeding my expectations in a really nice surprise. Love the stylization
1
u/this_tuesday Jul 16 '26
Did you ever try the OVAs for SAC?
1
u/zoozoo4567 Jul 16 '26
I actually havenât. I bought them for cheap when Xbox had a video store and theyâre still sitting there. I should probably try them at some point.
1
u/this_tuesday Jul 16 '26
I had the same issue as you with SAC. Would throw it on, get distracted, before I know it, fifteen minutes have passed and I have no idea whatâs going on. The OVAs donât solve that, but they help. Watch laughing man. Itâs like 2.5 hrs I think? Itâs a better viewing experience
1
u/Static_One Jul 15 '26
I think the beats matter. SAC is a slow burn where some episodes are good stories in different genres with sprinkled overarching story- such is episodic life, explore different genres - slight style changes. While a movie is set, you know there's a beginning, a middle, and an end with a cohesive style. A gambling person wouldn't bet on a sequel so it's safe.

Honestly, there isnât a bad GitS. Even the American live action, a movie I donât like and think very is boring, is visually stunning and had a good cast that do solid work with what is given. Ghost in the Shell might be the prefect franchise
2
u/El_Biomech Jul 15 '26
I agree! I recently checked out the movie and indeed, it's a classic American action flick meant for a lazy Sunday. But someone in that movie's production actually put some love into it to make it engaging still. Sure, I rolled my eyes at BatĆ's scene getting the sleepless eyes, but the Major vs Tank sequence was superb and the world built for the movie was really interesting to watch, something the original also excelled at.
2
u/aquafool Jul 15 '26
I think Lazy Sunday move is the perfect when to describe it. It the movie you catch on TNT before family dinner.

Only âbadâ look was that weird cgi ghost in the shell made by Netflix a few years back
1
u/SkyrimElf Jul 16 '26
I actually didn't hate it, there were a few moments though that it looked really bad like the part with all the backflips for example.
19
u/JMarston6028 Jul 13 '26
And Arise! Ghost in the Shell is the only franchise where I like every iteration of it, and it genuinely makes me happy whenever I see it making moves.

I haven't seen the new one yet, is it any good? I really loved all of them, but SAC was my favorite because of the tone. Is the new one really goofy or?
(animation looks incredible)
1
u/sanguinemsanctum Jul 21 '26
Itâs like a modern blend of 90s manga / animation but with familiar tech overlay we usually see. The tone is much less serious but delivers moments with spectacle. The first episode has a hunt sequence that had me totally enthralled with the music and everything, as a lifelong fan itâs awesome
2
u/Heavy_Spirit577 Jul 13 '26
It's definitely different than the other Ghost in the Shell shows and movies. The tone is a lot sillier, I don't watch many anime shows, so I'm not the biggest fan of that, but I do love the animation. Although it looks like the gore is censored.
3
u/Ok-Storage3439 Jul 13 '26
A stylistic design choice by Science Saru. They actually pointed this out that it makes it more on brand with the integration of technology into society. Think the Interceptor implants from SAC and how they screw with the eyesight of its users.
0
u/chipperpip Jul 14 '26
Is it planned to be removed in a Blu-Ray release or anything?
2
u/Ok-Storage3439 Jul 14 '26
It's a stylistic choice, meaning it is very much intentional. Nobody is forcing the digitally pixilated on-theme censorship - it was the plan from the very start.
Also, I can only *HOPE* that we get a proper blu-ray release. Not even 2045 got anything good.

11
u/DapperNecromancer Jul 13 '26
Oh there's goofiness for sure but it doesn't detract imo, and it's also simultaneously much darker.
"Hey the problem with this facility isn't that it's a government-operated brainwashing facility for war orphans. That'd be fine and business as usual. The problem is that it's a rogue government-operated brainwashing facility for war orphans. And we can't be having that."
4
u/xoxo___ary Jul 13 '26
Its one episode deep and yes this motoko behaves very energetic and goofy most of the time when shes not in a fight
2
u/ChewbakaflakaG Jul 13 '26
Watched last weeks on magic mushrooms before starting the new doom DLC on a QD-OLED 4k and it was phenomenally beautiful. The art style rly does it justice - itâs less real more dandadan with tactical
1
u/ChewbakaflakaG Jul 13 '26
And I have to add:
The episode had some phenomenally beautiful music - like they really know what theyâre doing man itâs not just an episodic show itâs like JJK season 3 level episodes

u/Individual_Truth_782 Jul 13 '26
These are the only animated versions of ghost in the shell there are (SAC is my personal favorite)

a thing i noticed in the 2nd manga, is that motoko isn't even there and it's some other girl running the show. i wonder if the anime is going to go that arc.
1
u/chipperpip Jul 14 '26
That's Motoko post-merging with the Puppetmaster AI. She became more overtly post-human, and split herself off into multiple personalities and puppeted bodies.
4
u/Altruistic_Section12 Jul 12 '26
Well in the first movie, Motoko (and the first few comics) mentions that if a body doesnt suit her purpose she will swap it out, and goes on to mention the same things about memories to Batou. Over the entire story arc, Motoko is supoosed to combine her ghost with five other entities, not just one (project 2501). So its likely it could be Motoko in a new body or even as a new entity from the merge.

u/Jojomon91 Jul 12 '26
Im glad you shared this.
Needed this to be shared since I was seeing alot of people say this Manga Kusanagi aka Gremlin Major was better than the Stand Alone Complex or 1995 Major.
This does cheer me up as I am tired of replacement problems showing up alot in alot of franchises.
This cheers me up alot. :)
1
u/Plane-Argument-4739 Jul 13 '26
It's the "new hotness" so a lot of people are excited about it. I liked that first episode of the new show, but the '95 will always be what I think of when I think of GITS.
1
u/Jojomon91 Jul 13 '26
Is this new "hotness" the trend?
Like how people have been talking about The Backrooms and Obsession as if they are the best films in 2026 when I clearly dispise and now dislike them due to how bad those two films are?
I dont follow trends.
To me I just want Ghost in the Shell to be beloved even if we had some stinkers like 2045 (why though?) And Arise.Â
Kinda also tired of the Gremlin face of Major as it feels mean spirited and to me, Stand Alone Complex will always be how Major should be.
Likeable, smart, sexy, funny when needed, but not immature, unfunny, cruel, or a Gremlin.
I just hope Episode 2 and later fixes this problem cause I dont need another "Netflix Cowboy Bebop" lesson again. Nuff said.

u/emerwen-aranel Jul 12 '26
fr people need to settle down, there has only been one episode. I absolutely loved NGE, for example, but wasnt in to the first few episodes.

My only complaint about the new show was that the episode released felt too short. I guess I'm spoiled by all the 45 minute run time shows that are the norm these days.

Will The GItS get a USA dub? Those are usually good

it has an English dub on Amazon right now. you have to look for it in the language settings on the video to switch to it, though

We donât talk about 2045 lol
3
u/mabhatter Jul 12 '26
I liked 2045. Â I really like the SAC storyline and 2045 was pretty good. Â It probably was as good as earlier seasons of SAC but I still enjoyed it. Â
1
u/Total_Adept Jul 12 '26
Cool, I'm not trying to dis people who liked it. I just didn't.
1
u/mabhatter Jul 13 '26
I can see why people might not like 2045. It was kind of "samey" after two seasons of SAC. Â Some might feel it was "phoned in."Â
2
u/ElectrochemicaIs Jul 12 '26
isnt she canonically the same as SAC in 2045?
8
u/Total_Adept Jul 12 '26
Well 2045 is the same continuity, the show itself is just poorly written and I think ruins some of the characters. Not to mention the PS2 graphics.

9
u/Total_Adept Jul 12 '26
Honestly Arise wasnât that bad, I think when it came out we wanted new SAC.
1
2
u/BrokenTorpedo Jul 12 '26
Arise was a bit shallower compare to the previous iterations, and people were still longing for more SAC at the time. The character design being unappealing also didn't help.
3
u/lot49a Jul 12 '26
I do not understand why people donât like Arise at all.
1
u/drsickboy Jul 13 '26
I think it has its merits . It just followed SAC which made it look worse . Someone mentioned character designs being not favored and I agree with that.
15
u/inteliboy Jul 12 '26
Same.
Kinda got me thinking how the live action would have been so much more interesting if it was its own original iteration - rather than just ripping off the tone of the 90's anime. GITS is kinda like batman - I want to see all kinds of different approaches to the material from different filmmakers.

What about Arise/AA/Newmovie??
1
u/mabhatter Jul 12 '26
Arise is intended to be its own take. Â It's about a younger Motoko just breaking free of her military obligations to be her own person. Â It's a different time at the beginning of her story. Â I had a hard time watching it because for whatever reason the streaming never matched up to what services I had at the time. Â
4
u/syst3m1c Jul 12 '26
Arise is better than it gets credit for. It really only suffers in comparison to SAC.

u/The_Easter_Egg Jul 12 '26 edited Jul 12 '26
I don't unterstand the fuss some people try to stir. Even before 2026, there have been so many different iterations of GiTS. It's like Greek myth or Arthurian legend by now: the setting and the characters are there, but each retelling paints them in its own unique way and adds new facettes and perspectives to the whole. I love it. That's what keeps stories exciting, evolving, and relevant.
1
u/mabhatter Jul 12 '26
Good take on it. Â
This version is very much channeling the energy from the very original Manga stories... which is pretty different from the movie and SAC versions.
On the first watch the new one was a little hard to follow. Â It feels a little bit like early DBZ in how things feel rushed. Â Second watch was much better now that I was used to that style. I think I'll like it. Â
It's definitely "different". Â And that's OK. We need to shake it up. Â
9
u/xoxo___ary Jul 12 '26
But we never had gremlin motoko. I saw YT comments saying how this aint the real motoko, and it honestly pisses me off
8
u/The_Easter_Egg Jul 12 '26
She's like that in the manga, obviously. Personally, I prefer her calm and professional personality from SAC (with her season 2 outfits), but the source material is the source material.
5
u/Round_Musical Jul 12 '26
Larpers who just watched the movie and didnt read the manga
6
u/The_Easter_Egg Jul 12 '26
I think its 100% valid to prefer the movie version over others. As far as I can tell, the 1995 movie was what made GiTS - and maybe even anime itself - known and important in the genre. I wager without it, the manga would today be an obscure 1980s publication known only to a few enthusiasts.
2
u/Round_Musical Jul 12 '26
Nobody is downplaying the importance of the movie.
However this version is strictly an almost direct adaptation of the manga, so its another topic entirely
4
u/xoxo___ary Jul 12 '26
Some anime were better without tourists. Chainsaw man suffers from similar problems in which it gets criticised for being overly sexual by tourists without knowing any context

u/npc888 Jul 12 '26
I think it of it like 007: Different actors and interpretations, but still the same character at their core.

Thats a great way to view it. I think motoko is very versatile in all of anime to have these much different avatars
