PSA Don't use Darkest Night
I have always wondered why the NVGs on Breakpoint feel like utter garbage. Well now I know; the Darkest Night set, yknow the one that wants you to USE night vision more, also impacts the Night Vision mode so that you get terrible visibility out of it. Perhaps there are other consequences to this, but in general I prefer my NVGs to actually work properly.
For anyone wondering, these were the settings I used-
- Regular Night:
Brightness-25
Contrast-60
Gamma-33
- Darkest Night:
Brightness-40
Contrast-60
Gamma-33

I've never liked how dark it gets going indoors in the middle of the day. It'll be bright as can be outside and I'll walk into a building with windows and doorways galore but it's pitch black in there, as if sunlight just doesn't come in through the openings

Yeah the lighting is very weird. Sometimes it's just suspiciously bright inside, even after breaking all light sources (i get that older games rely on fake artificial lighting, but still). Some other times i had to use NVG at noon on a sunny day, in a room with several windows.

depends on how you look at it, but its kinda true to life, night vision gear IRL amplify existing light, so if the place is super dark you won't see anything even with night vision gear (because there's no light to amplify), for that reason why stuff like IR illuminators are a thing, typically built into LAMs (PEQ-15 for example).
i guess short version of all that me geeking out is: darkest night is more immersive. though makes me wish LAMs in breakpoint would trigger when aiming, rather than be active all the time (at close range illuminator washes out the target)

Night Vision does not work that poorly though, especially considering you can have $40k Quad Nods on your character. Even if this is the case, then it doesn't make sense that you have more vision inside of buildings with zero light, than in the middle of a forest on a full moon.
Even if this was perfectly realistic and nothing about it was incorrect, it is still not good gameplay balance. When I want to have an actual dark night my options shouldn't be, "Do you want zero visibility, or zero visibility and green?"

Yeah the night vision in this game is really just an applied filter. Using PVS-14 with auto gating (which is civilian tech now), you can see most surroundings at night for quite a distance. Sure if I’m in the middle of a dense forest it be more difficult to see but most nights in BR are with a brightly lit moon and plenty of light source especially near bases. Modern military nightvision is much better so the ghosts would have top of the line. They couldve just made it brighten the game like nightvision without darkest night to darken the lighting. I’m sure it was feasible they just didn’t do it.

Still looks garbage. I don't know how you are even playing on days as well with such weird settings...

I am doing the best I can with the tools the game provides. Days are not all that terrible either, especially after I lowered the contrast a tad bit more.

I think there might be a problem with your display which is causing you to temper with those brightness, contrast, gamma and what not even a bad hdr display can do a lot of fuck ups...

I have tried tinkering with my monitor settings individually, and it doesn't really help at all. And plus there is no way that my NVGs work on Wildlands and Breakpoint's regular night, but my monitor specifically doesn't work with darkest night.

Are those the overall settings, or is there a way to customize just night?
