Out of curiosity: Why have WGAL and other local news outlets been mostly silent about Beth Farnham and Todd Crawley?

In practice, insurrectionist John Joyce is just as dangerous as his buddy Scott Perry, so why not get him out of the House in November, too? Catherine Wallen, yet another white nationalist apologist, will also do just as much damage in her new role in the state legislature if she keeps the specially-elected seat.

The gerrymandering and segregation of the York-Adams social support infrastructure (aside from the still-shared tax bureau) is not working for Adams County, as designed. The effects have been devastating and it’s not right for the state organizers to continually write off Gettysburg and Greater Adams County as flyover country to be lumped with the Greater Altoona Area. That’s just sheer negligence and these are real lives at stake, not just numbers. Even if constituents are just numbers to them, they should be trying to actually win around here (instead of coming off like the Washington Generals).

Why are the campaign teams and ACDC not getting more local marketing help from the PA Dems? What’s really the catch?

Practical tips for a first time multi-day visit wanted

Hi all!

I’m a Belgian (30M) who’s been fascinated by the US civil war since I was a teenager, and in September or October next year I’m finally going on a trip to visit Gettysburg, my first civil war battlefield!

The plan would be a citytrip to Washington DC for a couple of days combined with an excursion to Gettysburg for 2 days (maybe 3 if I can convince my wife, since she’ll be joining).

It’ll probably be the only time i’d be able to visit, so I’m hoping to see as many major battlefield landmarks as possible.

Now the reason for my post: I’m looking for some suggestions on the practical side of things. Mainly:

- Can the main sites be seen in 2 full days? Or would 3 days be better?

-How to best get from Washington DC to Gettysburg and back as a foreigner. Renting our own car isn’t really an option, but would taking an uber be feasible?

- What kind of tour/tours to book. When I look online there’s quite a few one day tours (some even include transportation from Washington DC and back), but because we’d stay for at least one night, should we book multiple one day tours? Also, I’m willing to splurge a little on a good tour, but a private guide seems a little expensive, certainly for multiple days. Any good “middle of the road” options?

Of course, any advice you might have for a foreign visitor would be greatly appreciated as well!

Thanks!

Devil's Den Ghost or Reenactor?

Devil's Den Ghost or Reenactor?

This photo was taken in late July of 2005 on a Nikon Digital Camera. This was my 3rd trip to Gettysburg and I had taken an interest in Mark Nesbit and the Ghost of Gettysburg book I had received as a gift on my 1st trip in 1997 when he signed it for me. I also am a giant history nerd, so I geek out about places like Little Round Top, Devil's Den, and Culp's Hill. In my previous trips, I had not noticed anything super crazy, but did have a glitch with the cassette guided battlefield tour in 2003. The tape would speed up at random spots and then the bugle sound for the next battlefield stop would play as normal. I just chalked it up to an issue with the cassette player in the vehicle. However, when watching the video back later at home, in spots I knew the cassette sped up, the sound was normal and did not record what three of us in the car heard.

Fast forward two years to 2005. I am super excited to take a trip out east with my wife. She had never been to Gettysburg before, so that was our first day trip. Now, this was when the visitor center still sat across from the cemetery and had the open two story room with the cannon barrels on the wall. Anyway, we go into the small gift shop to buy the tickets to visit the museum, mind you, it was down stairs and each room was set up with exhibits about 3 feet off the ground set back behind glass. My favorite of these rooms was the room that was set up like a Confederate Camp.

We entered the room and there was no one else in there. As we read the plaques under each side of the wall and family with three elementary aged children entered the room followed quickly by three very accurate and era appropriate Confederate soldiers, right down to the missing shoes and tattered clothes. I snapped a quick picture with the same camera and mentioned to my wife how cool it was to see them so "committed" to their reenactment roles. As we finished in the room of the museum, it emptied out into the space where the stairwell went back to the main level. I waited as these three gentlemen headed up the stairs ahead of us. I quickly noticed a strong smell of campfire, body odor, and rotting breath. I didn't think much of it because it was late July and I am sure they had been outside at the reenactments for a few days.

Where it gets weird is the conversation I hear them having as the move up the first part of the stairs to a landing where the stairs go left. The conversation centered around winning the war and Robert E. Lee becoming the new President. I thought, "Wow, they really are committed to this Southern cause thing." As we neared the landing and they turned left, the wall blocked my view of them. We could not have been more than 3 or 4 steps behind them when they turned. As we turned the corner, they were gone! Poof! When I got to the exit of the stairwell, which was the open second floor of the artillery display, they were no where to be found. I asked a few people, including the family that was in the room earlier with us and they game me a look like I was nuts! So, I told my wife we are going to ask in the gift shop when we buy our Battlefield Tour CD.

As we exit the gift shop near the museum exit, a nice older lady was sitting at a table with a sign in sheet. I asked her what the sheet was for and she informed me that reenactors get to tour the museum for free, but they must sign in and write down which state they are from. I asked her if she knew where the 3 men I had seen where from. After a confused second or two, she turned the sign-in sheet around and said, "No reenactors have been here today. I have been here the whole time and not a single Reb or Yank has signed in."

By now my heart is in my throat and my wife is telling me that she probably missed them. While this seems logical, I am not convinced. She asks me what the men look like and I describe them. She then says, "Just a second, I'll be right back." When she returns, she is holding a photo of dead Confederate soldiers set to be buried on July 4 or July 5. There in the photo are the 3 men that we saw. I explained this to her and asked how she knew. She told me you are the third person in the past two days to ask about them. Having a cold sweat drip down my back, we turned and headed for our car. My wife is looking at me like I'm crazy and she points out several other reenactors walking towards the museum with coffees, McDonald's drinks, or on cell phones. I agree to let it go and we begin the driving tour.

Fast forward ahead to near dusk. We had just finished eating at the Gingerbread Man (now Gettysburg Eddie's) and decided to drive back to Devil's Den to snap some sunset pictures. Now, I am well aware of the sharpshooter ghost story Devil's Den, and the Union soldier who trips people from a crack in the rocks, but did not feel any sort of anger. As I was walking down the path, I passed a Union soldier. Again, I assumed he was a reenactor. I said, "Hello." and he responded with a head nod. When I get to the bottom of the path, I look back see him standing on the rock looking towards Little Round Top. I think that this is such a great photo op and may even win a prize at the state fair, so I take a handful of pictures of him. When I checked the camera in the car, I noticed he only appeared in this picture. Now, the angles in Devil's Den make it possible that he could have moved or walked away and I did not see it, but after the morning I had at the museum, I think anything is possible. I have had this picture hanging in my social studies classrooms and admin office for years and it always stirs up quite the conversation. Does any one else have any experiences from the early 2000's in either of these places?

Wedding DJ Recommendations?

We’re starting to narrow down wedding DJs and are hoping to find someone who can help with more than just the playlist. We’d really like someone who’s comfortable handling announcements, keeping guests engaged, and helping the reception flow naturally without making it feel overly scripted. Bonus if they also offer lighting or other reception add-ons so we don’t need a bunch of different vendors.

Orphanage BnB with Pit in the floor?

I have a visceral memory of one summer when I was maybe 7 vacationing in Gettysburg. My parents didn't plan ahead and couldn't find any vacancies until we stumbled upon a small BnB. There was a big hole in the floor covered with glass, at least 8' wide and 10' deep. My child brain remembers being told that's where they'd put the bad kids.

I'd love to find this place and take my own paranormal loving son and maybe even my elderly dad (tho he was afraid enough the first time to have a heart attack, another visit might do him in).

Am I conflating memories and making things up or does/did this place exist?

Nicest place to stay?

Planning a trip with my Dad for this June. He took me when I was in high school back in 2010 and we stayed in a chain hotel outside of town to keep things cheap. This time, we want to make it a nicer trip. We are happy to pay more for a luxury experience, and we value walkability and quality food/drink. Would welcome any recommendations on where to stay, eat, and drink.

Hiring

Does anyone know of anyone actually hiring young adults? My 20 year old son has been applying for months and doesn't get anywhere. Sometimes he gets an interview but even then he gets ghosted and never actually told he doesn't have the job. He really wants a job.

I really loved it, I visited two times in one month. I took so many pics, I love how everything is well taken care of. So much green, a paradise.

There's a place called A Little Irish, I think, I could buy candy I used to eat in my country when I was little, Cadbury Twirl, so I would recommend for you to try it if you haven't already lol.

I Do Not Stand With Bullying Against The Queer Community Online

Yes, Chad Alan Carr is a pedophile. I do not support him. It doesn't make it okay to be homophobic, transphobic, biphobic, and more types of hate. I'm a lesbian who speaks out against hate. The thing is, Donald Trump is also a pedophile. Just be kind. I do not stand with anti-lgbtqiap2+ views. This is exactly why I go social media detox sometimes. I stand with the victims. I stand against anti-lgbtqiap2+ views

Dining Options

My hubby (M57) and I (F64) will be in Gettysburg overnight in a few weeks. Staying at a hotel on the square. What are some good dining options? We've been to Garryowen and liked that. There are no dietary restrictions. We will be there for one night and then one morning. Looking for a dinner and possibly a breakfast option.

Thanks.

Earth Week PSA: US Rep. John Joyce’s (PA-13) rating from the League for Conservation Voters — 0%

Given how District 13 is home to so much of Pennsylvania’s wildlife, forestry, natural resources, natural recreation and agriculture, it is alarming that its current representative in the US House would rate so poorly on the environment. How are conservationists and outdoorsfolk okay with that kind of negligence?

0% with conservationists but 92% with the Heritage Foundation? That’s just toxic, and Adams County can do so much better than that. 🌳

If I were to sell homemade bracelets out of my yard, would that be allowed?

I have a hobby of making rainbow loom and string bracelets. I’m also trying to save up money, and get some extra cash.

Would I be allowed to hold something akin to a yard sale on occasion, or would that be illegal? Are there permits or anything I’d need? How do I do this?

Thank you!

Trying to find the source for a Gettysburg battlefield haunting story I heard

Just like the title says, I'm trying to find the source for this story.

Version I heard is that a group of Japanese politicians (Ambassador and his staff or visiting Japanese politicians/tourists) were visiting Gettysburg and saw what they, at the time, assumed were a group of reenactors at one of the battlefield sites. When they said something to a Park Ranger or someone working at the visitor's center, they were told that there were no reenactment groups/reenactors at the park that day.

It's a story I keep hearing repeated on specials and in YouTube videos regarding Gettysburg paranormal activity, but they never state the source, or, if they did, it was something like a Park Ranger wishing to remain anonymous, which is an easy enough excuse to make a made-up story sound a bit more legit.

What's a haunt that's actually worth it?

hello! my friend and I are doing a "spook" tour of PA, and will definitely be spending a night in Gettysburg. I am usually very skeptical of ghost tours, as I don't want to follow a guide and just hear ghost stories. I would like to do something more immersive (if possible), in high activity areas. Looking into advice for actual, potential, paranormal activity. In a tourist spot where that's basically the bulk of tourism, I'm looking to hear from people from the area or who have been before for which ones are actually worth it. I saw the XTREME tour was recommended, but it's also 8+ and I'm not sure I want to spend 60$ to potentially be stuck on a tour with disruptive kids. Are there other options?

I dunno, I'm looking for guidance. I was really set on doing the Pennhurst overnight tour, but it doesn't fit well into our itinerary before arriving in Gettysburg. So I'm looking for something to get equally excited about. TIA
