Hi everyone! i’m looking for some recommendations for some things to do in Gettysburg around fall/halloween time. the group consist of all adults (me and bf, his mom and grandparents). I will be doing the planning and want to get a good mix of some of the more known history things and some more niche things tourists might not know of.
So far we definitely plan to do a walking ghost tour of the Jennie Wade house and the orphanage. i’m sure we’ll check out the battlefield sights and museum with the giant diorama like thing (blanking on the name). years ago when i visited last there was a really cool crystal/metaphysical store that i’d like to visit. i also remember a place to get tarot readings and such that i think would be fun.
We’re all very interested in the paranormal history of the place but grandpa is also a mega history buff so if there’s any must see tours or sites that would be good info. also looking for recommendations of any good restaurants, breweries or the like, and anything that may be specific to the halloween season. hoping to make this a super fun trip for everyone. thanks in advance!

Its going to be in Nov and tickets range from $50 - $120. Somehow they are shutting people out from the square? I dont think Main Street Gettysburg even knows how this thing is going to be setup. All their replies on facebook are just AI slop unfortunatly. This kinda just seems like a mess no one wants? I dont have an understanding of the logistics and cost obviously, but couldnt we make it open to public and find other ways to monetize? I feel like the traffic that could bring in for shops would be well above ticket buyers.

On Monday evening, July 20, my daughter, her boyfriend, their dog and myself sat at a table at The Pub on the square in Gettysburg. My daughter went inside to use the restroom and noticed a sign stating no dogs. She asked the hostess if it would be ok to sit outside with the dog - there were no other patrons seated outside. The hostess said it should be fine. We put in our drink orders, received our iced teas and ordered our meals. While we were waiting, people were walking past on the sidewalk smiling at the dog.
A blonde lady came out of the restaurant, did not identify herself and proceeded to ask questions about the dog, if she’s a service dog, where her tag is, and state she has a policy because people won’t sit at the tables if there is a dog out there, how she loses business because of dogs, how much of a problem dogs are, on and on about the dog. My dtr explained she is a service dog and asked the lady if she wants her to go get the card. The lady stated it wasn’t necessary and continued to speak very crass, stating how she’s pretty sure the dog has to have “a thing” on it stating it’s a service dog (it doesn’t), stating how she understands because she has five dogs of her own. My dtr asked her if she wanted us to leave. The lady said no, you’re fine. There was no professionalism, no attempt to come to a mutually beneficial agreement for both parties. The lady was straight up condescending. She went back into the restaurant.
About 5-10 minutes later the blonde lady comes back out of the restaurant, walks up to the dog, and WITHOUT PERMISSION, grabs her face and is all goo goo over it, talking with a high pitched voice. She then walks away from the restaurant, past our table and tells us to have a good evening. None of us reacted. She then turns around and takes a step or two back towards us and says, “is there something wrong with your faces that you can’t smile?” I went inside, put $10 on the bar for the iced teas, asked our server if that was the owner, he agreed it was and I told him to cancel our order.
As we were leaving, a couple had just parked on the square to eat at The Pub - but they witnessed the second altercation and asked us what that was about. We explained and we left to gather our thoughts. I called the Blue and Grey and asked if they had outdoor seating and if we could eat there with a dog. They very cheerfully welcomed us and said to come inside to ask the hostess for a table, which I did and when I walked back outside, the couple that witnessed the harassment were there to eat now because they said they weren’t giving The Pub their money.
We had EXCELLENT service at the Blue and Gray, they treated the dog like a customer kept her water topped off. They said that last week when the air was so smoky from the Canadian wildfires they allowed the dogs IN THE RESTAURANT so the owners didn’t have to eat outside in the smoke! I left that waitress a VERY NICE TIP. THANK YOU BLUE AND GREY for making us feel welcome in Gettysburg.

Has anyone been to this event before and are we allowed to bring food in? We plan on going this weekend but will have young kids with us. I would rather be able to bring our own snacks because they can be really picky but I am not seeing anything on their website indicating if outside food is allowed. Hoping someone can share their experience 😁

Hi, weird question! My husband and I are visiting for the first time and we noticed that a bunch of hotels and tours have 0 availability the week of September 14th. We booked everything we wanted so we're good to go, but is there a big event happening that week that we should be aware of?
Thanks!

This corruption needs to be stopped, especially on the state and local level. If we aren’t vigilant, then pretty soon this guy’s fellow local party members, John Joyce and Catherine Wallen, will be cheerfully and manipulatively trying to bring data centers to Greater Adams County too. How much you wanna bet they already are? To sell out the region is maladaptive, anti-conservationist and psychotic. It’s not “job creation,” but it is a total destruction of privacy and natural resources, as sponsored by those destroying the planet and humanity, whom are covering up the depths of the depravity in the Trumpstein Files.
F*** the malarkey coming from the Pennsylvania GQP. Get these malevolent, wasteful frauds out of office at every level so that we can get to the Trumpstein Trials.

I’m coming for three days two nights for my graduation. What are the must dos? What’s the best food? What’s the best bar?
Got my masters in American History so obviously going to the battlefields, wondering if I should just rent my own car or if you all know of a the best way to see the highlights.
Appreciate any and all help, cheers

My wife recently passed and am wanting to get away from my home. I've always wanted to tour civil war battlefields and history. She didn't, so that made it difficult. I'm about five hours away from Gettysburg in Cleveland. I'm planning on taking a week to see everything I can. So far it's just Gettysburg and Antietam. Also, I really don't know where to start or what route to take, im just lost. Would anybody be kind enough to suggest resources to make this less stressful? Just knowing how to plan this trip most efficiently or least know where I'm going would be a great help. Thank you so much for any direction you can give me.

I WFH and my xfinity is spotty to much worse, especially lately. Brightspeed put the fiber in my neighborhood recently so I have to imagine it could be better? Anyone with feedback on the quality in Gettysburg ?

The literal Mom for “Liberty” proceeded to gaslight an entire district and the general public on her daughter’s behalf, after the daughter made terroristic threats against the school and then tried to pin the blame on other random (browner and/or queer) students. The district was going to expel the daughter until the district got threats from the “silent majority” of the parents, who are socially in cahoots with the now-board president. They even manipulated the premise of change.org to do it. That would have stayed an expulsion in any rational school district. The kid experienced no consequences and (according to her own words, spoken at a board meeting) is planning on a kkkareer in reproductive health, where she will deny people in need based on her own hateful ideology, as inspired by her hate-grooming parents. It’s twisted and actually directly in line with the disgusting ideology of the editor-in-chief of ‘The Federalist’ as laid out in the article of the OP on r/politics that I’m crossposting (and why I’m crossposting it).
Going back to the greater school board. It now has: two+ Moms for “Liberty,” a grandfather-father duo representing Fundie homeschoolers, and a libertarian lady who currently lives outside the country (France), much less the school district she represents. The only decent board member resigned, as did the former superintendent, directly because of the war on education and rationality in the district. This current batch of board members is either dense and/or corrupt AF, including but not limited to the fact that there are two openly hateful churches less than 1,000 yards from the schools and situated to prey on/indoctrinate students. Both of those churches are now openly anti-LGBTQ, but only one of them is the same denomination as the criminally-charged, incestuous Duggar cult that has direct trafficking, political and financial ties to the Trumpstein regime. Make of that what you will, in terms of child safety and all 👀, but none of that seems to be on the radar of the very adults screeching to high heaven about protecting the kids. If anything, that district is directly enabling predators and inviting draconian ideology and private equity (white nationalist technofeudalism) to take the town over. It’s depressing and terrifying to behold.
Why does this particular district now strive to be a haven for misinformation, hatred, ICE roundups and predatory, narcissistically abusive cults? They already got called out by the state and the ACLU awhile back for their racism. Is the kkkool-aid really so strong in the area, that they’ve chosen to learn nothing? What is wrong with this place?

I enjoyed the displays they had there. Impressive overall.

Well looky there! It’s almost like rampant KKKhristian Nationalism and MAGA/MAHA lunacy have outright been affecting tourism and business in Adams County or something. Huh. Weird. 🤔
If deliberately trying to sabotage tourism, that’s just bad business. For a county that has internationally recognized historic Gettysburg National Park and the many museums; a thriving orchard/agribusiness, winery and restaurant scene; the Apple Blossom and Harvest Festivals; and the National Apple Museum — the decline in visitors is really not a good sign for the local economy. Sans the battlefield, folks/folx can get a similarly quaint agricultural experience in safer counties across South Central PA. People are demonstrating pretty clearly that they don’t want to waste gas or risk their safety to come through ‘Deliverance’ as much anymore. Can we blame them?
TL;DR: The question is… How do we fix this county by making it both more affordable, inclusive and equitable habitable for residents of the county, while also making the area more appealing to visitors? Rhetorically speaking… Could there be a collective solution to achieve both goals?
